We're hoping to start with respite when we can finally start our foster care journey. I think it'll be a good way to get started since we do not have children. Like you said, a good way to get our feet wet.
🙌🏼
What a wonderful gift/ act of service to offer the other foster family and the foster children.
In the case of tense times in the current foster home, a different environment could offer de-escalation and maybe a listening ear.
Separately, I can imagine if the family is going away on a trip, and can't take the child(ren); the fosters might feel sad/'bummed out' that they aren't going.
I would love to start doing respite to see if fostering is a good fit for us!
That is really cool to hear. It’s a great “test”. With little commitment and risk by you and the kid.
I’m thinking about doing this so perfect timing.
How cool! I wish you all the best!!
How often can a foster parent request respite care? Is it frowned upon in the foster care society?
Separately, what is the cut off for respite before it becomes a placement? Obviously, it's not a placement but is there a cut off? What are the legalities of respite?
Lastly, do parents have any say on respite care?
Posting a video now to answer this question and others 💛
In NSW Australia you have to do the same application process as long term Carers to become a respite carer. It’s a loooong process.
We have amazing friends who have done this for our family so that our son can stay with them more than one night.
Isn’t it incredible when you have family and friends who have gone that extra mile? Those are your ride and die.
Hey Erin - my wife and I are looking into starting the process to become carers sometime hopefully next yr. Where should we start?
@@flamingcoop you’ll need to do the Shared Stories, Shared Lives training whoever you go with. It would certainly be a way of telling if it’s something you want to do.
Getting in contact with an agency who does foster care would be a good place to start. They usually have people you can talk to about it all.
I won’t recommend ours and don’t have experience with any others.
@@flamingcoop also keep in mind that the system is completely broken. Which is even more reason to get involved for the sake of the kids trapped within it.
@@erincarter9457 what agency are you with (So I can consider others?)
The only respite care I have been offered is on the roughest estates with drug, antisocial behaviour and criminality. When I mention this to social workers they seem astonished
Merry Christmas 🎄
Hey I was waiting for this video x
Better late than never 🤷🏻♀️🤣
Are there any restrictions with regards to outings? Can respite parents take kids to the park, museum, restaurant, etc?
Next school year I’ll be a first year teacher and depending on my living situation, I think providing respite care on the weekends could be the right fit somewhere down the road.
What is the average pay rate for respite. Yes I know its not all about the money but it's still a paid job. Just wondering whats the pay rate.
Do you need Insurance? What type?
Does it require to be licensed?
