- In today's video I share with you 10 Tips to growing lisianthus successfully!
Lisianthus has a reputation for being EXTREMELY difficult to grow, but I DISAGREE! Their needs are just slightly different, & they grow a lot slower than most seedlings!
I hope by sharing my tips for growing lisianthus, you decide to give growing them a try!

Disclaimer: I am not an expert & don't think I ever will be... I think gardening and farming is the one career that is impossible to be an expert at. There are so many theories out there, & the research being done proves & disproves things everyday! So I am doing things based on my research, best judgment, and personal experience.
We need to send her a battery for that smoke alarm :)
🤣 I've tried a new battery... something else is wrong with it! 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks from Pakistan, your video really help me
So glad it helped! What varieties are you growing?
Can I just say one thing about that slide you included about your 'accent'? A lot of people adjust the way they speak depending on the circumstances. I've definitely got my "customer service voice," and my family voice and they are NOT the same!! All of my mom's generation has a twang, not a drawl mind you, a real twang. It's beautiful to me, not just because I love them but because it's got a music to it all it's own. You do you!! I enjoyed all your editing remarks & all the info in one video was super helpful. I'm new at this so I'll be checking back for all the flowers on my list. Hope you're having fun this spring!
Thanks so much for that! 🥰 So happy to have you join the channel! 👏
So I just saw your video of the update of thelisianthus blooms you're getting right now & I wanted to come back to this video & tell you thank you so much for this! I followed your directions & had great success!!! They're still a ways away from blooming but I have lisianthus! :0
Awww I'm so glad!
Watching a year later with my kid running around 😂 - I'm going through kinda verifying my progress with older videos I haven't watched 2-3 times. I'm going to catch another tip somewhere. Even with slow progress & a big family. ❤
@@ElderandOakFarmI heard dealing with "child running around" & then "mice". I lost SO MANY CORMS this year. Sounds like I'll need all your tips :-)
I bought my lisanthus and wow have they performed all summer long! I’ve been cutting them weekly and they keep coming. I’m in horribly hot central California half my plants burn and die. Lisianthus is in pots with roses and have been awesome
Awesome! Yes they like a cool start & a hot finish!
@@ElderandOakFarm good to know! I cab provide that. Lol.
FYI--- Lisianthus are Perrennial in my zone 8b.
I started Lisianthus when I received my seeds. I had to move February 1st and was going to wait to sow. I tested 5 pelleted seeds, guaranteed 65% so far 2 of 5 have germinated. Success I'd say. You'd be amazed how I planted them!
Lolz
Lol. What'd you do?
Ahava....I planted lisianthus for the first time late last winter...I ordered plugs....so they are working on their second flush....so when they finish blooming the second time do I cut them back to a couple inches again and mulch them for the winter??? I had no idea they would bloom again ???
Yep! They're perennial, or will act as one, in zone 8+ I believe... If I plant them early & cut them back I get a 2nd flush here in zone 6b too!
Great tips, thank you 😊
@piecesofjoy8681 hope they helped! Thanks for watching!
I really knew nothing about Lisianthus until I heard flower people on YT talking about it. Honestly I didn't even know what they were. Your confidence and your tips make me want to try just for the fun of it (and the challenge). And this would be an excuse to get more seeds (not that I need any). 😉 Tha ka for sharing. Oh and I'm in the North but I still appreciate your accent. Just like in my garden, I love to see diversity and variety out in the world.
I just discovered them a couple years ago myself... About my accent- ty... I actually have much more of a hillbilly twang 🤣 I hate it! But I try to speak slower & clearer on camera, not really even purposefully, it's just that I hmget anxiety that I'm going to forget my train of thought I guess, so I slow down & think more about what I'm trying to say, so I have time to think about the pronunciation, so when I'm about to say something like "I think I gonna plant a Hy-draaaain-juh or sum-em right here" Im able to say it correctly- "I think I'm going to plant a Hydrangea or something right here" 🤣🤣🤣 But the deeper into the video, & the more I get "confortable" talking, especially in lives when it's a back & forth conversation, more of my accent comes out! Lol
I love Lisianthus and you seedlings look beautiful!
Tysm!
Great tips, thanks for sharing! I've not tried Lisianthus yet in my garden but these tips are encouraging to try it out.
You should definitely give them a try! Theyre so beautiful!!! Thansk for watching!
Amazing tips. So grateful! I don’t know how much I have already spent this year trying to grow lisianthus!
Ty so much! I hope it helps! 👏
I will give them a try now! You've convinced me it's not too difficult!
Awesome! I love to hear that! You can do it! Let ke know what you decide to grow & hownit goes!
@@ElderandOakFarm I will!
I swear I've watched this video 5 times! 🤣 What do you fertilize your lisianthus with once you transplant them in your cut flower farm?
Haha! Thats OK because I need the watch time to get my channel monetized! 😄 Keep on rewatching!

Bought a seed packet of lisianthus and am going to give it a try! THey are beautiful flowers! THanks for the tips- I'm a new subscriber!
Awesome! Ty!
Amazing ❤
Thanks!
Great video Candace! Awesome tips!
Ty!
That's great!! My 1st year growing and mine are doing great too! Most are the size of your oldest and only about 6 weeks old. I did use a heat mat though. I had 99%9 germination too. I've only lost 1, almost 3 now. I hope I'm not jinxing myself by talking about them now though. I just wanted to share I did use a heat mat and they had their 2 leaves about 3 weeks ago, so I started the fish fertilizer (in my house 🤢) then and they have exploded since. Very little alge, but the darn knats are starting anyway. 😓 it's good to hear someone encouraging, instead of discouraging! Thank you for sharing!
Germinating would be so much quicker with a heat mat, and then you don't have to have the humidity dome on as long. I seed start in my home too, I just took off the vent cover in that room and shoved a towel in it. The top only needs to stay wet, or they'll rot, I agree. Then they need to dry slightly, very slightly, between watering. I don't have much humidity though. I think that's in my favor.
I never did half strength fertilizer. Maybe that's why my tiny ones are dying. That's okay, I have lots. Thanks for sharing on the fish fertilizer brand. I was thinking of trying the stuff at Home Depot next time. You saved me!!😘
Awesome! I wpuld look in to the gnatrol or bactive for fungus gnats!
What do they look like before dying? Ot could be overfertilization.
@Elder & Oak Farm I just had like 4 stay super small and then eventually they started to turn yellow. I just plucked them on case it was something. I wouldn't want it to spread. I was fertilizing, and they were probably too small for it??? Who knows. They just failed to thrive type of situation. I'm using knatrol now, fingers crossed because they multiply fast!!!
Candace thank you for this video & tips. I'm still waiting for my lizzie seeds from Geo...(lesson learned -- order MUCH earlier next year...) I still have high hope's for a harvest this year. Just subscribed 🌷🌷🌷
Ty! Yes I didnt order from them last year because I wasnt going to be able to get my order in time to get them before I needed them. This year I ordered super early & recieved them in 6 weeks. Hopefully you get them soon! What zone are you in/when is your last frost date?
@@ElderandOakFarm I'm in 5a in ny state; but there are pockets of 5b right next to me...so I guess it depends...
You should still have time then as long as they dont take much longer!
Oh geez. I think I did pretty much everything wrong that you said. (First year growing them.) Back to the drawing board. Thx for the great info.
Oh no! Well hopefully you have better luck next year! 🤞
Awesome awesome tips Candace! How many Lisianthus are you growing this year? I know in your last video you said you were growing several varieties, but how many plants altogether?
Sorry I just saw this... About 350 plants.
How do you go on vacation when they’re seedlings?? Since they grow so slow lol. Does someone come water them? Or maybe you can do the water in the tray thing.
We haven't been able to afford to go on vacation for the last couple years, but we plan to go in the fall instead of in the summer like we used to. So when the garden is Winding down and about to come to a stop. Lisianthus seeds don't need to be started until around Jaunuary for most people... Gardener's don't ever plan Vacations from spring-late summer . Lol. I used to pay people to watch my garden but I'd always come back to tons of dead plants & there's too much hard work & money that goes into what I do for that!
17 minutes of trying to figure out which of my smoke alarms needed a new battery!😅
I did the exact same thing…was confused as I had just changed the batteries about six weeks ago 😂
Me too!!!
(31×) Great info! I now know why I haven't been able to grow it 😂
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Candace Thanks so much for the information. Did you mention how long you leave the light on? The Wattage and distance
I did not. I will try to link the lights I use here, but I'll also put it in the description for you! I have purchased many grow lights, ranging from the very expensive marshydro lights, to the cheapest of the the cheap. The very expensive grow lights are just not necessary when you're only growing seedlings/vegetative growth. Those lights are more for growing something all the way to flower stage... they very expensive & use a ton of energy. I wish I never would have bought mine.. & those red/blue/ purple colored lights, aren't necessary either. All you need is something with around 40 watts or 4000 lumens, & between 4000k-6500k on the light spectrum. Theu dont need to be "grow lights" I promise! I wasted a lot of money on "grow lights" & as you can see my seedlings are growing great under the lights I just mentioned. Now For lisianthus I leave my lights on for 12 hours, off for 12 hours. I usually set up all my seedlings on this schedule take things easier, but technically, seedlings require less light, the older they get- so for lisianthus you could do on 12/off 12 just for the 1st 4-6 weeks, & then lower to 10 hours on/14 off for a few weeks, then 8 on/ 16 off for the last few weeks of you're looking to reduce energy or anything like that... Oh, & I put 3 per shelf, but you can probably get away with only 2, & just keeping the seedlings no more than 6 inches away from light. But with 3 across I usually put them about 10-12 inches away from light. Hope this helps!

That smoke detector is triggering. Hahah
I'm sorry! It's fixed now! 😊
just subscribed!
Ty so much!
So sorry to hear about your voice, and the only thing I don't like about your channel is that beeping from your smoke alarm needs to be changed and if YOU cannot hear it! Ex-nurse saying, get your hearing checked please!
Thanks.
I'm sorry! Idk what's wrong with it we've replaced the batteries & nothing works!?! I will have my husband look at it again this weekend!
I could heater it at first, but I'm just used to it now... & can block it out.
Are you growing lisianthus this year?
I am! I'm going to be doing a seedling tour/ update video soon! Jeep an eye out for that!
Is that your smoke alarm beeping
Yes I'm sorry! It's the one on my office... we've tried replacing the battery & it still beeps?!
It may need replacing…they have a lifespan
Mam I can't understand your pronounsation but I want to know how to grow plz
