Kala KA-BE review and pros and cons of a Baritone Uke

  • Hi gang…thought I’d do a quick review of the pro’s and cons of playing a Baritone Ukulele. This was inspired after a few players in our Eagle Uke band recently purchased them and , alongside Roz on her Baritone , have further enhanced our group sound.
    I played this very Baritone for many years in a previous uke band and loved the beautiful bass sound it added. It can take a while to get your head round the new chord positions but follow the “rule of four” and you won’t go wrong. Like everything in life , practice makes perfect and chords become fluent in no time with the benefit of an easy finger position for the dreaded E chord…😁🎶.
    It’s a must to have in your uke collection ( in my opinion ) and if you play in a uke group ( and I really hope you do ) they will love the rich sound you bring along.

    I've had my baritone for 15 years.
    I never played it.
    When I developed a heart and lung condition I couldn't have guitar pressing closed to my heart.
    I had started playing a dulcimer and lap harp.
    My music instructor had a baritone and I told him I had one.
    He asked me to bring it to our next session and within a few weeks I was able to play it with very little problems.
    What I had learned on a guitar came back to me!
    I love my baritone!!
    I enjoy playing with others on different apps and that's how I found you guys!!
    Maybe eventually we will have a ukulele regular get together where I live!!
    Anyway a Happy New Year's and I will be watching you guys!

    I love watching you play Graham. Your smile is contagious ☺️. I own this model Baritone also and absolutely love it. My Ukuleles are also Kala Brand. The Baritone is really in a class of it's own in my opinion. It's not a Guitar. It's not a Ukulele. It's a Baritone. 🌺

    Lovely to see and hear your Baritone thoughts! Really appreciate your encouragement and enthusiasm as I’m fairly new to Ukulele with my Aklot tenor (amaaazed at its tone and quality!)and just love the deep, warm tones of the baritones I’ve heard online…And yes, Southern Ukulele Store (Bournemouth) are incredibly helpful even to me in very rural southern Italy! Also thank you for everything else you and Roz provide for my/our enjoyment and play-alongs! With gratitude…

    You've shot my week now. I had jury duty on Monday and you're here on Wednesday, I'll never know what day it is now. LOL That being said, I did just pick up a gently used Kmise baritone which is strung GCEA at present, but I do plan to put proper baritone strings on it soon. Having played guitar in the past, the chord changes shouldn't bother me.
    Can't wait for Friday! Take care.

  • @ukuleleBob
    @ukuleleBob Před rokem

    Thanks. Great video. I bought a Baritone a few months ago and it is the uke that I play most of the time. I play guitar some, so the chords are easier for me, but a few years of 'regular' ukulele have caused some 'muscle memory' that makes me occasionaly play a 'G' when I wanted to play a 'C', or a 'C' when I wanted to play a 'F'. I think this is good for my brain.
    I would like to have you sweet-talk Roz into doing a short video showing how she 'picks' her Baritone. I do standard picking-patterns but would like to do some of what Roz does. I hope both of you keep being my 'Favorite Flavor On A Friday'.

    • @EagleUkes
      @EagleUkes  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for your great comment Bob ...I must admit, that although the Baritone was bought for Roz, I mainly played it for about 10 years with a previous band and loved it's rich bass tone and how it added to the band sound. But 4 years ago we set up our own Eagle Ukes group so I had to teach newcomers to the uke so reverted to a Tenor Uke whilst Roz went onto the Baritone. She does have a great finger picking style that she seems to just adjust to her feel for the sing being played. I will ask her if she'll post a video on her picking technique but she is quite a shy gal....thanks for following what we do...👍😊💕🎶🎵

    I play all the sizes and even tenor guitar tuned dgbe it's a shame there aren't more baritone players.its my preferred size. I think the problem is many people start on the smaller sizes and are reluctant and hesitant to learn the new chords on baritone, I'm always keen to show the they're actually the same chord shapes just different names and I've managed to convert some friends 😁.

    • @EagleUkes
      @EagleUkes  Před 5 měsíci

      I agree Nige that all ukulele players should give the Baritone a try ..you really can't compete with the sound you get from the Baritone...so deep and rich and as you say the chord shapes are the same just different names...and isn't the dreaded E chord easy to play...a good enough reason for anyone to get one...👍🥰

    Hi there Graham, that's a nice & friendly vid you just gave for us and the baritone. For me as a guitarist, me having purchased a baritone the other day, it's not really just me being lazy, it's more that the baritone is playable all the way up the neck. With my soprano, and even concert, I ever only strum in the 1st pos since its so darn small. The baritone to me is fully a music instrument. And then we have the bass line, coming from the guitar; that's what really defines the guitar as a generic rythm instrument - I'm hinting at the weird 4th string on the others. I'm going to our uke band this evening; let's hear what they say, might stir some comments 😆(hopefully no controversy as I checked with the band leader previously; Oki he said, quite a bit enthusiastically). All the best! /Hakan

    Hi Graham, Thankyou for your review it was so helpful. I have a Kala Baritone SSEBY-B-CE and I would love your comments on what strings I might try? Suprisingly I am struggling with the sound, I know I have a beautiful instrument. Also would you mind popping up the link please for the strings you suggested I can"t seem to find it. May I ask are the strings in the orange gold packet or the pale aqua as there seems to be 2 Baritone GHS 100 sets of strings? Crickey, thats alot of questions! Thanks for all the joy you bring me on a Friday along with your Roz and your beautiful daughter Faye.

      Thanks for your lovely comment and hope you manage to get the sound you're after out of your baritone....I always play with the pad of my thumb ( which gives a softer sound ) and just hit the top string on the first beat as this turns the instrument into more of a bass...best wishes and sending our love to you and yours...👍😊❤️💕🎵🎶

    Hi Graham
    Ordered a Brunswick Baritone yesterday for £82 new,with a discount on Ebay.
    I watched Baz on Got a Ukulele reviewing the concert,and although being an entry level instrument,he thought it was rather good.
    He said that Brunswick are based in London,but their Uke's are made in China.
    I am left-handed,and i have small hands,and i once bought a Kmise Baritone,and returned it,because the frets at the top of the neck,were wider than i am used to.
    However,when the Brunswick arrives,my intention is to keep it DGBE,and put the Capo on the 5th fret,then i will have GCEA......problem solved.
    This is a Birthday present for me,because i will be 75 on March 5th.
    I had never played any kind of musical instrument before the 1st Lockdown,so i have only been playing on and off for two years.
    I usually just use C,F,Am and G or G7.but i have recorded almost 80 songs.
    Unfortunately,i developed Carpal Tunnel in the early part of last year,so this will be my re-introduction if you like back in the world of Ukulele.
    Good luck for the future Graham,and i have subbed you.
    Kind regards
    Lew. (York)
