    I am also a chemistry teacher but honestly, you are genius brother. i do always recommend my student to watch your clips. i would be happier if you can produce clips for advanced organic chemistry.

    What if you have three random measurements and no way to tell if it's accurate? I have an example: Circle the number that has the best precision: 0.034 g, 123.8 g, 1.4 g. Can you determine which measurement is most accurate?
    How can you tell whats the most accurate if you don't know what the accurate number is?

      The most accurate measurement would be the one with the most significant figures.

    3:24 It is accurate, but more or less so, right? It doesn't necessarily have to be spot on to be considered "accurate". It can be relatively accurate, relative to the other groups' measurements, right? 3:51 Spot on! So both precision and accuracy is relative. I guess we can say that precision is relative to other measurements, but accuracy is relative to other measurements and to the actual target. Right?

    if one of the measurements is 500 whilst the remaining are 400 and 300, considering one of the accurate measurements, i.e. 500, is the entire measurement accurate or not? And are we supposed to calculate the average to determine accuracy?

    Could you help me with this one? What do I compare the accuracy and precision to?
    An engineer calibrating a 100.00 μL pipette got volumes of 0.102 mL 0.098 mL, and 0.104 mL evaluate his accuracy and precision.

    How can the number 3 have an infinite number of significant figures? What's the argument for that?

      Pretty onions tbf, it's a number you count. It's either 3 or not 3. It can't be anything but 3. That's just how I think of it.

      Onions? I thought we were discussing numbers. I think one needs to understand limits in order to grasp this properly. It's something that I'm studying right now. The limit is a fundamental concept of calculus. It relates to things like theory of measurement.
      Ask yourself, is 3 really a 3? Then is 3.000 just a 3? I would say yes, they are both "just" the number 3. Why? Because they are not actual measurements! The number 3.000 might be considered more precise than the number 3... if it were a measurement! But it's not! It's not a measurement! It's a counting number, just like "one, two, three, four" and so on. It's called a cardinal number. It's this mental image of what a "number" is, it's not a physical object or something you measure with a ruler or tape measure.
      So the "000" at the end of "3.000" does not add any more precision than what "3" alone does. I believe this is the reason why trailing zeros are omitted in measurements, and they are considered "non-significant" digits (or figures).
      Just to be clear! When you see "25 Km", you know it's a measurement! It's a measure of distance between two endpoints. The unit of measurement, the "Km", is what directly reveals that it is a measurement. (Which is why it's always important for professionals to always write out the unit.) But when you see something like "twenty five" in a written text (or you hear someone say it), or you see just "25". Then it may or may not be a measurement. Maybe they were not very professional or forgot to say that it's "twenty five feet" or "25 ft." Either that or they are actually talking about this mental image of a number, this counting or cardinal number "25".

      because 3= 3.0 = 3.00 = 3.000000000000000..... Therefore number 3 is an exact number, or we can say that it has unlimited SF
