What if you have three random measurements and no way to tell if it's accurate? I have an example: Circle the number that has the best precision: 0.034 g, 123.8 g, 1.4 g. Can you determine which measurement is most accurate? How can you tell whats the most accurate if you don't know what the accurate number is?

Onions? I thought we were discussing numbers. I think one needs to understand limits in order to grasp this properly. It's something that I'm studying right now. The limit is a fundamental concept of calculus. It relates to things like theory of measurement. Ask yourself, is 3 really a 3? Then is 3.000 just a 3? I would say yes, they are both "just" the number 3. Why? Because they are not actual measurements! The number 3.000 might be considered more precise than the number 3... if it were a measurement! But it's not! It's not a measurement! It's a counting number, just like "one, two, three, four" and so on. It's called a cardinal number. It's this mental image of what a "number" is, it's not a physical object or something you measure with a ruler or tape measure. So the "000" at the end of "3.000" does not add any more precision than what "3" alone does. I believe this is the reason why trailing zeros are omitted in measurements, and they are considered "non-significant" digits (or figures). Just to be clear! When you see "25 Km", you know it's a measurement! It's a measure of distance between two endpoints. The unit of measurement, the "Km", is what directly reveals that it is a measurement. (Which is why it's always important for professionals to always write out the unit.) But when you see something like "twenty five" in a written text (or you hear someone say it), or you see just "25". Then it may or may not be a measurement. Maybe they were not very professional or forgot to say that it's "twenty five feet" or "25 ft." Either that or they are actually talking about this mental image of a number, this counting or cardinal number "25".
