Ranking EVERY 100 Coin Star in Super Mario 64

- Super Mario 64 has 120 stars, and of those 15 of them are based on collecting 100 coins in each stage. After the recent reveal of N64 Games coming to switch in the form of the Nintendo Switch Online expansion pack, I thought it was time to revisit Super Mario 64 and rank every 100 coin star! These are some of the hardest in the game with a good mix of the best and worst stars as well. We'll be mostly ranking these by how fun they are, however these stars applications in speed running and glitches associated with them will also be considered. Without more delay let's jump into ranking all 15 100 coin stars in Super Mario 64.

fun fact: in whomp’s fortress, you can get 100 coins without killing any piranha plants or whomps, and without throwing boxes

When I initially played Mario 64, I got 119 stars, as the hazy maze cave 100 coin was too hard for me 😞
i’ve been playing odyssey for 2 years and i haven’t gotten the 100 jump-rope and 100 volleyball moons. i’ve gotten EVERY OTHER MOON IN THE GAME, INCLUDING THE BULLET BILL THING WHICH I FORGET THE NAME OF
I’ve had Odyssey for almost 4 years and I don’t have 3 moons, the Jump Rope Moon and the 2 Picture matches Moons

here’s how to avoid getting locked out of the 100 coin star in tall tall mountain!
step 1: go in the slide
step 2: die in the slide
step 3: respawn in the slide
step 4: get coins in the slide
step 5: leave the slide
step 6: get the coins that aren’t in the slide
step 7: PROFIT

i just got 50 then grabbed the one at the start of the slide and got my total to 99 got a red coin and boom done. I do hate the 100 coin stairs

Ok one issue with tall tall mountain, the slide is so large, that it has multiple loading zones in the slide, so when you cross a certain point, the slide behind you unloads. This can be an issue because if you grab the 100th coin, the star will appear above you, but you will be moving too fast to grab it and if you try to climb back up the slide, you will fall to your death and you cannot get the star again unless you die (at least it doesn't lock you inside the slide forever). This has happened to me multiple times.
I just do the slide first and then collect the rest of the coins
Always do the slide first. Both Cool and Tall Mountain.
@@BareKnuckleBlaze Yeah, but CCM, the slide is right there, TTM, you have a ways to go before you get to the slide.
@@epicsause21 I know, but it's still better to do the slide first because you can warp back up there anyway. Besides, getting the star on the ccm slide is still annoying.

Interesting that you put Dire Dire Docks at the bottom. Though I understand your reasoning for it, I myself find it one of the better 100-coin stars to do, as it's a relatively painless process compared to a certain few other stages. **coughtinyhugeislandcough**

I know I would sound like a 🤓 but Womp’s fortress has 141 coins in it and tall tall mountain has 137. I am trying to get maxed out scores for each level, so I would know from pain. As well, this might put Hazy Maze Cave lower, but once I had the star spawn over the monkey bars and I wasn’t able to collect the star due to the invisible walls. Yes Nintendo somehow made that mistake. Anyways great video!

Rainbow Ride is probably the most frustrating to me due to the wall kicking required to get to the blue coins and if you fall you have to restart, as well as all the waiting on carpets, and the stage being overall too spread out.

I'm playing the DS version right now and was shocked to see that they actually changed the slide on Tall, Tall Mountain to make it worse. Now once you finish the slide there's no way to exit the area in which the star at the end of the slide is kept.

I can remember I had in Hazy Maze Cave collect 100 coins, but the 100 coin star appeared out of bounds (above a hanging platform that I could not reach back then)

I didn't even know Dire Dire Docks had 106 coins. I only counted 101, because there were 5 on the wall in the first area, literally hidden in plain sight thanks to terrible render distance.

It took me YEARS to find out that you could run around the wooden poles for coins..... as a kid I spent so much time in Bob-omb Battlefield firing myself out of the cannon for those last few coins!
I remember getting the 100 Shine in Noki Bay in Sunshine, but I died before I could grab it.
Glad I’m not the only one who messed it up. During my last playthrough, I spawned the Shine Sprite and accidentally entered the loading zone for The Shell’s Secret after trying to get a blue coin.

I enjoyed it and i also agree on whomps fortress in my expereince i also found it as the easiest one to get. for shifting sandland and leathal lavaland i liked it in a chalanging way. first i collect as much coins as possible i prefer 70 or more then go into the valcano/piramaid to get the rest.
You can actually get the Whomp's Fortress 100 coin star on the first visit (you don't need the upper fort or the floating isles). It doesn't take much time either. You don't even need to stomp the Whomp's for 5 free coins a piece (though you still should groundpound them).
I honestly enjoy all 100 coins stars until the last 4 stages and shifting sand land
I certainly remember finding out about that problem with Tall Tall Mountain's slide the hard way...
18:26 here i recommend to not race with the penguin, as there's a high chance of him pushing u off. The best option is to long jump so u dont have to talk with him, it saves time, or just say "Don't go"

In Lethal Lava Land it isn't required to enter the volcano. You can get 100 coins before entering although it is just as tight as Dire Dire Docks. But if you are already at, let's say, 90 coins, then you can enter the volcano and collect another easy 10
Mario 64 is my favorite game of all-time and not only do I think Whomp's Fortress 100 Coins is the best 100 coin star, it's one of my favorite stars in the entire game.

I hate Jolly Roger Bay on a personal level. Having to get all of the blue coins means it's possible to spend an hour swimming around the level at 99 coins trying to find that one last coin, only to go on super mario wiki and find out that there's only 104 coins and you need to actually back out of the level. Yes this is an actual experience I had.
Also the invisible wall part about tick tock clock is hilarious to me because of the pannenkoek video that came out recently.
I usually do the 100 coin star and red coin star at the same time. Makes it a lot easier to get as many coins as possible.
It would be interesting to see how much the list ends up changing in the DS version of the game, it's probably a bit to redundant to be a whole separate video but it's still a curious thing to think about.
How cool would it be if they made all 3 slides from SM64 into a Mario Kart sprint track.
You could start from Ice slide go through Mountain slide and end it on Secret Castle slide.
I forget which levy but once when doing a 120 star run I got the 100 coin star but I had gotten a coin that was fairly high up so when the star manifested I wasn't able to jump up and get said star. I tried for like 20 minutes before giving up and trying again. I made sure to get a lower coin as my 100th next go around. haha.
One time while playing 64, I was getting the hazy maze cave 100 coin, and literally got softlocked because I got the 100th coin holding on to the cage thingy

I'm surprised you didn't mention the chance to get the coin star during the slide in cool cool mountain, happened to me once, very frustrating
I never had any issues with the "lock outs" in Shifting Sand Land and Lethal Lava Land
I got all of these type of stars in one sitting back to back because I didn’t know they were in the game until very late. It definitely took a few hours
For me I’m gonna go (from easiest-most difficult/annoying):
1. Whomp’s Fortress
2. Big Boo’s Haunt
3. Cool Cool Mountain
4. Wet Dry World
5. Bomb-omb Battlefield
6. Lethal Lava Land
7. Snowman’s Land
8. Jolly Roger Bay
9. Tiny Huge Island
10. Hazy Maze Cave
11. Shifting Sand Land
12. Tall Tall Mountain
13. Tick Tock Clock
14. Dire Dire Docks
15. Rainbow Ride
I would’ve put both of the water worlds (DDD & JRB) at the bottom simply because of how limited the coins are but they still are pretty easy to get. DDD is towards the bottom because of how long it takes on those damn poles.
I will still says it’s still a bit easier than rainbow ride though, if you suck at wall kicks like me and don’t get all or most of those blue coins rainbow ride is gonna be a drag. And I completely disagree about LLL being paired up with SSL. If you get the shell getting the coins in LLL is super easy, you can get 100 without having to go into the volcano, in my opinion it’s actually the easiest stage in the basement section of the castle.

If only Lethal Lava Land and Shifting Sand Land had 100 coins each in their outer and inner areas - would make them the most _fun_ places to seek the 100 coin star. Also, Lethal Lava Land is the only stage where you can't get the 100 Coin Star and then use the 8 Red Coin star you had to spawn in order to leave the stage, thus there's no optimal 100 coin star run for it like there are for the others.
Lethal Lava Land does have 100 coins in the outer area so I don’t really know what you and Odyssey are complaining about.

I disagree with the placement of Lethal Lava Land. I always find it fun and even on my first 100% run I waited to get as many on the main course before attempting the volcano
