  • A remarkable moment - a random comment on our Nighmare Before Christmas TCG stream turns into a conversation and relationship with its designer, Andrew Parks, who then blows us away with fascinating stories from the early days of tabletop (Z-Man, Ed Beard Jr., Iron Crown Enterprises, NECA, Wizkids, and more). Every conversation brings more context to this industry, how we got here, and where we're going - we hope you'll join us for a listen.

This was my favorite interview from 2023. Thanks so much, guys, for having me on the show for such a wide-ranging discussion of past, present, and future!

Really enjoyed listening to this and thank you Andrew for helping make this and Team Covenant for covering this game. A great game for sure!

    Very interesting conversation!
On the topic of Kickstarter and what Andrew considers to be the future of board games (more emergent storytelling).. one of my favorite recent games is "Oath: Chronicles of Empire and Exile" which is NOT a game for everyone. It is also not the first Legacy game! But it manages to tell a different story very well if you are paying attention to the things that Players do (which is rather hard to notice when playing). Of course, every board game game is different from another table.. but the "Chronicle system" does put into perspective what is happening on the land where the winner shapes the future.
Funnily, this company has a weird practice when it comes to upcoming games.. one I'm not sure I like. They developed "Root", which is SUPER popular! So people get on board whatever they do rather easily. So when a new project is announced, they share a prototype of what they want to make.. people back it to extinction and beyond. And as the project develops (because they don't finalize it unless funded), it drastically changes functionality and visually. Ultimately, the game you preordered, will not be the same.
Also, how were the MtG LotR prereleases, Zach?

I was hyped about their upcoming space 4x, but it just got more complicated as development continued. :{(
