Atarashii Gakko are way too much fun, and fortunately they're now gaining a lot of popularity in Japan thanks to this song (and tiktok, where the dance went viral). If you want to experience a totally different vibe from them i highly recommend their two first albums from 2018 and 2019: both are a unique and phenomenal mix of pop, jazz, rock, electronic... not a single boring minute on any of them

We knew you'd get here eventually ;) AG is always lots of fun, and starting to gain more world wide recognition - and the First Take programme definitely helping them out in Japan. Always themselves.

When touring the US last year Suzuka was asked where new fans should start listening to AG. Her response was Koi Geba. It has a great video, vocals, totally different instrumentation and even a heavy and serious subject. czcams.com/video/ye5v9mOkDh8/video.html I am a huge metal fan and pretty much despise pop…BUT damn I love this group, their songs, dancing and just overall presence. They have a deep catalog as the have been around like 8 years.

Good suggestion, I haven't listened to "Koi Gebba" in a while so I followed your advice and listened again. It may be one of their more "musical" tracks.

The dance practice video for Otona Blue is also fantastic. The MV too. Dance practice sounds boring but all their dance practice videos are amazing.

There are parts of the Japanese Idol scene that's similar to Korea's but as you said, there are some that are the complete antithesis. Anti-Idols *Atarashii Gakkou no Leaders* are without a doubt my favourites - here is more lol.
ATARASHII GAKKO! - 新しい学校のリーダーズ 「恋ゲバ」 (brilliant early song)

Thank you so much, I agree 100% actually I'd even say the kpop scene copied a lot from the idol industry of Japan since that has been going strong since the 80s maybe even earlier.

They are not idols, they are just a group of singers/dancers but as you said they play around and they are pretty independant and have a lot of creative freedom, they make all their choreographies and dances for their songs themselves, they write their lyrics and for songwriting generally collaborate with bands or composers.

Their MV and live are kinda random dance but its serious allright.. They are singing & performance group..

Yeah I didn't mean it in a negative way I just mean it in the way is not a "normal choreography" in a way and I totally love that I'm pretty sure they still have to practice them a lot

Not really my kind of music but one can't help but smile when watching this.
You mention City Pop....there is one credible reactor that said Band Maid's Corallium had City Pop elements. It is a multi genre song
