A 400HP Chrysler Crossfire Track Car?

  • 400HP and 3200lbs. So why don't you see them at the track? Or, anywhere?
    The Chrysler Crossfire was a joint venture between Daimler and Chrysler in the early 2000s. Despite being designed by Chrysler, it was built by Karmann and is 80% Mercedes SLK. The SRT6 was the performance model, making 330HP (20 less than the SLK had, despite having the same engine). It's light by modern standards, short, and quick.

    Mines a 2004 6 speed coupe. Some day, I plan to try a swap to either the SRT motor or a NA merc V8 as it will need an engine eventually. No real reason to sell it as it's not worth much, so I'll probably keep it going as long as possible, modding as things fail.
    For now though, some good plugs and tires, K&N air, stripped trunk and headliner and anything else not essential, lightweight battery (maybe 80 - 100 pounds shaved off?) and replaced and upgraded fuel pump have made it exceptionally fun. I've put close to 30K miles on it coming to 190K total now. In almost two years only had the fuel pump go out and that's it. I kinda need wheels but these are extremely expensive to actually improve upon and they are still round so whatever. It is definitely a touring kind of car, not really a canyon carver but damn it feels good on the highway and can definitely corner even on the replaced but stock suspension, which is probably the stiffest stock suspension of any vehicle I've been in... to a fault really. I've heard people say they feel squishy and flexing a bunch. Maybe the roadsters, but the coupe feels pretty stiff all around. The steering is one thing if at all possible I will be trying to improve, but over all a blast to own so far for a $3000 car with 157K when I bought it. Slides around pretty good too >:)
    I would think I would be the one to run into all the nightmarish issues I keep hearing about given the miles and two very uh.. demanding owners before me, another demanding owner. Oh well, cant hear it over the best V6 sounds ever in my experience.

    60s "steering box" = recirculating ball. You either have rack and pinion or a recirculating ball box. The differences in older systems have to do with how the Pitman arm and drag link(s) are arranged.

  • @Levibetz
    @Levibetz Před 4 lety +1

    Zack, recirculating ball steering is a fancy ass name for gearbox steering. The mustang you drove would have been rack and pinion. Mustang IIs and foxbodies are rack and pinion. The two main types of gearbox steering are worm and wheel and recirculating ball. Recirculating ball is infinitely better than worm and wheel, but still not excellent. Worm and wheel is downright scary, that's what you get in old beetles, and some really early american stuff (pre-mid 60s ish). Like a C1 corvette has worm and wheel. But most wollowy old American cars rock recirculating ball gearboxes.

    I had one for a few years. The rear tires are very expensive. Also, oil changes averaged around $100. (Not at Mercedes dealership ) The oil was a weird weight, at least by American standards. Lastly the oil filter is mounted on top of the engine so you have to be sure if serviced that the filter is tightened properly, otherwise you will be replacing the super charger belts. (Not cheap)

    PSA the engine makes the same power as the slk32. Mercedes did a lot of lying about the AMG motors hp in this period, because they only made one version of each engine and put them in so many cars. So, if you bought the S55, it was rated higher than the e55, even though they were identical internally, and used the same ECU. Some cars had slightly bigger exhausts, and they're all hand built, so there's variances, but they all dyno similar numbers...

    I had a white original SRT-6 with 485 bhp 380 rwhp with paddles, red seatbelts, ground control full suspension, killer chiller AC, pulley , tune, air, lowered. I started the www.srt-6.com website and registered 1000+ cars. Check it out. Car is now sold but very quick indeed. Fun build but that wing must be doing too much drag. We made a gold one too for track too. Redline is 6500+ if u do tune. Ground control, eurocharged and needswings are companies to use.

    • @DreamDrivenLifestyle
      @DreamDrivenLifestyle Před 4 lety +1

      @@DrewZ926 There are pulleys on the market to get 400+ from the srt6, pretty common but the fact that 90% of the people owning one are in their 60s, nobody outside of the crossfire forums really knows about them

    • @DrewZ926
      @DrewZ926 Před 4 lety

      Absolutely. I have a c32 and have been running a 185 crank for 10 years. 400+ crank is fairly easy but cracking 400 to the wheels you’re really pushing the factory SC and generating a lot of heat.

    They’re manual swapping SRT6’s quite often now. There’s even a M113K swap with a 6 speed and 5-6 M113 swaps with the 6 speed manual. The misconception that the 6 speed manual trans couldn’t handle the SRT6 hp and torque was just that a BS misconception. Lookup Josh Chase at the Mercedes Sawp Shop in Cali. They’re even throwing the beefed up 722.9 7-speed autos in them too.

    Mercedes didn't take 20hp, it was a marketing/PR ploy not to piss off Mercedes owners. They could essentially have the same car in the STR6 for 10'000$ less. Actually the car has better cooling stock over the slk32 amg. 349hp for slk32 and c32, around 362hp for the SRT6. Tests have been done showing said differences. So many misconceptions about these cars. Mercedes didn't give a rats ass about Chrysler during the merger. Just look into the Chrysler MEfour-twelve story. A car that even by todays standards would be a beast.
