they arrested him before he could do a runner on the bill, thus making him a accidental criminal mastermind, because he got a police escort away from the crime scene.
He was a petty criminal who had indeed walked out and not paid for many restaurant meals. However, he was not the particular person they were specifically looking for. They were looking for a Hungarian Australian man, who was a one time chess expert, and was doing runners on restaurants for years. They mistakenly thought this guy was him as they looked very similar but he actual was a petty and unknown conman. I say unknown THEN. He certainly became known since then.
