Jay made Wilco better and without him they've never reached that quality again. Underrated talent.

Nels has brought a ton of creative energy to the band.
@@DufraneHikesNels is an insane talent. Especially in his other projects. That being said, I feel like Jeff's compositions and arrangements have gotten lazier since Nels joined. Jeff just leaves the arranging all to Nels pretty much these days
Nels Cline and his sloppy cacophony guitar-work ruined Wilco for me. Tweedy writes good songs and Cline just takes a Sonic dump on them. Wilco died for me when Bennett was kicked out. Haven't liked them in about 20 years now.

Great documentary! Unsung hero indeed. I had the privilege of seeing Wilco + Jay in the mid-late 90s a few times; to this day, some of the best live shows I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen lots. Jay was not only Wilco’s driving sonic force in studio, he was arguably the most dynamic guy on stage when they played, and after he was unceremoniously handed his hat, Wilco was never quite the same for me after YHF. I miss you, Jay, RIP.

Same, saw them several times with Jay. The Troubador 1996 show was still one of the best shows I've ever been to.
Just finally watching this now. I want to say something else. I have never met a musician be as spontaneously brilliant and creative in a recording studio as Jay Bennett was. I live in Nashville these days, where there are all kinds of wizards who do amazing stuff, but he did all of that plus engineering ideas and he worked very quickly too. I backed this project on Kickstarter but didn't have any expectations that the film would be this amazing on the modest amount you asked from fans. WOW. Wilco has been my obsession for a long time now but I first heard them in 2005 on the A Ghost is Born tour. I missed the entire Jay era and this doc was so illuminating, touching, heartbreaking, and funny. Bravo to everyone involved with this. I especially loved the illustrations put together for moments that had no live footage to go with it. Great editing, flow, etc.. I found it all real inspiring for my work on my channel/life. RIP Jay and BRAVO to the team that put this film together and all the fans who donated to make it happen.

Saw Wilco multiple times with Jay in the 90's. He was an awesome performer and multi-instrumentalist. Wilco went on to make awesome music,but after Jay was gone I always felt there was something missing. When I heard he died it really got to me. The guy was a Rocker!

Thankyou to the filmmaker … i just ‘met’ and feel like I got to know Jay Bennett through this film . Ive only known Jeff Tweedy latter day ‘ Wilco ‘ which I love. This doco about Tweedy’s formative creative partner & the strengths they each brought to their collaborations as well as Bennett’s own unique talents adds so much information and it felt true and fair. Wow! What a full on driven and complex character!! He just seemed unable to pack enough into a day & doesn’t feel like his mind every rested! . Wonder if today he might possibly be described as ‘on the spectrum’? Which doesn’t detract from his creativity or brilliance but he sailed at full tilt didn’t he?
His death though, was very unfair, & such a cruel twist of fate!
Most creatives have an element of autism in them. Apparently they have an unusual symmetry in the left and right lobes of brains.
This is what real love for life and genius look like. I hope he will continue getting all of the love and recognition he deserves.
Jay was a genius. He just was. He didn't know how to be anything else. It was baked in at birth, I feel certain. I knew him and when he died I felt an ineffable sadness that has never really gone away. I'm so glad Jay existed. I'm so glad this film was made. Kudos to all involved.

For some reason, when I first got Summerteeth I just didn't get it. When I circled back to it years later I was blown away and wondered why it was so different from everything else Wilco had done. I dug deep and went down the Bennett rabbit hole and found out he had passed. What a weird feeling. Thank you so much for putting this together and correcting the record. I had no idea about the true circumstances behind his death and his last days. Although still tragic, I find this memory of him a little more peaceful. An incredible tribute to a driven and talented artist.

This documentary was so sweet, I always felt like Jeff and jay were similar to the Beatles Paul and John. Amazing artists who heads and ambitions got too big for one band to Handle. I mean down right to jays/johns life’s being cut short right when they were picking up again! I hope jays friends and family are doin alright now a days. Wilco just isn’t the same without jay, lovely band I still adore but without jay it has something special missing
I love Jay and went to high school with him and played in bands with him. I lived with him for 3 years in Champaign. He was brilliant.
But he killed the goose that laid the golden egg with Wilco.

This is a much more engaging doc than 'I am trying to break your heart.' It's warmer, more textured. Loved the 'Boomtown Rats' bit.

Great doco, thanks for posting. Ultimately Wilco put out their best music and were at the height of their creativity when Jay was in the band. That's all that needs to be said!

Great Documentary. Confirmed what I already knew. Jay did much of the "heavy lifting" with YHF. Jeff planted the seed, nurtured the growth of the tree, and Jay was basically, "okay, let's get this s&*t decorated!" I hope one day Wilco will release the alt version by itself (not in a $200 12 lp set)

I got to see the Being There tour! it was weird to hear Wilco without his voice after all that, but I saw him and Ed tour twice in Seattle and we partied, and he played California Stars, and it was one of the best shows ever. Jay Bennett man, what a legend. thank you for this documentation
Lots of folks saying wilco didnt make as good of records after Jay left and i disagree. Those records with him are great but let’s be real they made awesome records that were better in a lot of ways. Nels Cline joins not long after Jay leaves and those records push the band into the giants they are today

This is such an incredible documentary. Thank you to the makers for making it and the backers for backing it. It reopened a part of my music loving history I had almost forgotten, and reminded and reinforced in me the absolute essential role Jay played in making Wilco, well, WILCO. The pacing, presentation, flow and love in this film is outstanding. A must watch for any Wilco fan and quite a movie for any music fan.
The Magnificent Defeat, The Palace at 4am, Kicking At The Perfumed Air are some of the best records I've ever heard. Man I loved Jay.
So much respect for this band and admiration for Jay Bennett, you can see from his brother and Mom how much love existed at home to help nurture his genius. I was profoundly sad when Jay passed, RIP. Love this documentary, thank you.

Really enjoyed this and I'm glad someone took the time to tell Jay's story. Before this I pretty much just viewed him in the way the movie had portrayed him. I am curious why there was no mention of his lawsuit against Tweedy/Wilco though.

As a kid from STL, this documentary really hits close to home. Being There and Summerteeth are fantastic records.
I went to that off Broadway show with my future brother in law and good friend. It was legendary in terms of meltdowns and a guy at the end of his rope

I was friends with his older bro in high school, when he was learning guitar. When he was getting pretty good (it didn't take long) he once complained about guitarists soloing without moving up & down the neck of their guitar -- just staying at one fret. 44 years later that's often in my mind when watching guitar solos.

Two of Jay's biggest guitar influences were Gary richrath in high school and James honeyman Scott in college. In fact Jay used to sign his name James honeyman bennett for a while in college

I rented this on another service - well worth watching. YHF is one of those tension-filled albums that sounds like genius - like XTC "Skylarking" and Fleetwood Mac "Rumours".
The cartoon characters that he drew are essentially straight lifts fro MAD Magazine's Don Martin.

Besides the massive nfluences of The Beatles and Neil Young and The clash and the sex pistols, the biggest influence on jay and all of us was absolutely Elvis Costello. Westerberg had a string of the three or four brilliant albums in the mid-80s. But no one could touch the absolute brilliance of Elvis Costello from 78 to 86

Jay didn't go to high school or college. He went straight from eighth grade to being in Titanic love affair. Amazing!
I believe that's wrong. Wasn't he a teacher for a time, after attending the University of Illinois? I've seen an interview on YT where he mentions it.
@@patriciagrandjean8205 I was being sarcastic. The movie skips over 8 years of high school and college. I was his best friend in high and lived with him for four years in champaign. We played in bands all through high School and college. We were going to be the next Lennon and McCartney. He got a lot closer than I did with Jeff tweedy. I was being sarcastic in my post because the documentary skipped over years of his life, from 16 to 21.

Wilco with or without Jay Bennett still has nothing on Uncle Tupelo. The Farrar/Tweedy collaboration was magical, raw, and more focused. That said Jay Bennet was clearly a genius- that sort of person perhaps should have worked alone with his own band.

When I first saw the Sam Jones doc I thought Jay was kind of a turd afterwards. That didn't last obviously but it made me feel differently about him.
Interesting, after I watched the Sam Jones doc, I thought Jeff Tweedy was a turd. It coloured my enjoyment of Wilco for a long time. I still don’t listen to anything past YFH.

I love jeff and would love to be his friend but jay definitely comes across as far more charismatic and likable than jeff. After watching the doc I am. I feel like jay would be the guy I'd want to be around and hangout with
@@peterlenardon46 sky blue sky & a ghost is born is where I stopped. I cant remember which one came out last. The stuff they churn out now is nowhere near the older stuff. Jeff seemed to hit a wall lyrically after those 2 albums. I still check out new albums just in case but they aren't great. The music is awesome & you can hear the progression they have made but the lyrics/songwriting aren't good. It almost feels rushed.
I don't believe Wilco peaked with YHF. Sky Blue Sky is effing brilliant.

After following Wilco for so long, and being a lover of all things Jay, I think that Jeff started to feel that his band was slipping away from him like Uncle Tupelo was. You have two amazing songwriters in one band it's hard to compete (collaborate) with each other until it starts to feel like a chore. I think Jeff was certainly wanting to go in a different direction and Jay wanted to make Summerteeth Part 2. Both wanted great things, but being Jeff's band, one of them had to go. Well, two people went if you include Ken. It's an end of a great era of music but at least we got that. Named my cat in 2008 after Jay's middle name the day we got him and the day we found out Jay passed in honor of Jay.
I'm surprised this doc didn't bring up both Jeff and Jay's pill popping problems going on during the Summerteeth and YHF sessions. Tweedy had a problem but apparently Bennett's was even worse, getting FedEx packages of pills each day at the loft. Tweedy says in his book Bennett's painkiller addiction had gotten so bad, Jeff was afraid Jay would get him killed if he continued to be around him.
Jeff new that jay was way better than him at almost everything and jeff was intimidated by jay. Jeff was jealous
Jeff gave more control to jay on summerteeth and he realized that was a mistake and that jay had wrested away control from jeff. Wilco became jay after that album. and jeff wanted it back

I loved Jay and his music; much more than Tweedy. However, to add a piece about the power of film editing, and then NOT discuss the extent (or lack there of) Jay's drug or alcohol abuse and how it may have contributed to his eventual downfall, is disappointing, to say the least. Was this film simply a counter to the IM TRYING...film? Ok. In which case, well done. You built up Jay's side of the argument. But it doesn't give a full and true pic of Jay anymore than the I'M TRYING film did. The only people that will really know the truth are the folks that drank and did drugs with them and saw them both sober and under the influence.

Part of me has always thought that the REAL Jay Bennett died a decade ago and Philip Seymour Hoffman faked his death so that he could play as Jay as his greatest piece of work.
WIlco's best stuff to me is the early country influenced stuff. A.M. and Being There. Summer Teeth was different but good. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was where I lost interest, it was alright but I haven't bought a record since.

This man doesn't have an appealing singing voice. I appreciate his contributions to Summerteeth and YHF. I think those are among Wilco's best. But let's be real: Tweedy is the real deal, and the reason Wilco is successful.

I don’t think Jay was the heart and soul of Wilco, but he was certainly the icing on the cake. Me: no Jay, no Wilco
