Love Lisa Hilton. She started out as an art historian, then moved on to writing books about historical figures such as Madame de Montespan and Elizabeth I. She's incredibly knowledgeable and a really good writer.

I just finished watching 'The Rise and Fall of Versailles'. Lisa Hilton is such an eloquent speaker, she should make a documentary.

Is Ms Hilton speaking in front of the King's bedchamber (above)? Is this considered the front of Versailles?

Marie Antoinette wasn't french, she was Austrian.

Marie Antoinette clearly caused her own downfall. Ignorance is never an accuse and a ruler attracts their own downfall and there is nothing it can bring down a king or queen other than their own errors.

Moise Picard really? Think carefully, DIMWIT. Marie Antoinette made so many mistakes that caused her downfall.

Moise Picard you're the one who called me retarded and stupid in the first place. Marie Antoinette isn't entirely to blame for the French Revolution but for her own downfall bec she lived a very hedonistic lifestyle and was ignorant of her duties as queen. There was more to just giving birth to an heir but she had to make sure that the people were protected and fed. She grew up in the philantrophic court of Austria but allowed herself to get carried away by the corrupt lifestyle in Versailles (you have Duchess Polignac for that help) and don't point out that just bec she was only a teenager she had no idea what to do bec I know a lot of monarchs who ruled young but never lost their heads.

I won't call you any names Ira, but you really don't know what you are talking about. There's a reason why historical novices have a bitter resentment of Marie Antoinette, and people who have spent more time studying her life, or the events leading up to the revolution, tend to be more sympathetic. I suggest keeping and open mind and studying the topic more; Not looking for information to support a preconceived notion.

She did not cause her own downfall. France was changing and the aristocrats, nobles and royalty were no longer seen as relevant. The lifestyles of the rich at the time were incredibly extravagant. People were suffering, hungry and cold. Meanwhile the top 1% were partying like no tomorrow. I think the rich were completely blind to the fact that regular people had no food to eat and were wearing rags. Poverty and extreme hunger were not a part of their experience. To say Marie Antoinette and her ilk were the architect's of their own demise is wrong. The masses were fed up, but the rich and royal were oblivious to the problems of real people because those types of problems were not part of their reality.
