⭕ [𝐒𝐞𝐭 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝗢𝗡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧-𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧] ⭕
It lies 78 km from #Thessaloniki. It is one of the newest villages of Kassandra, because it was founded in 1922 by Asia Minor refugees. Although it is a new village, it has a centuries-old #History to show. The area has been inhabited since ancient times. In historical times, two cities flourished. The #Sani colony of the Eretrians, built on the western beach and the Skithea built in the Toronean gulf.
In the 14th century, there were many Agioreite shares in the area. In 1407 Ioannis #Palaeologos granted the area of today's village to the monastery of Agios Pavlos of Mount Athos. Then it seems that the #Byzantine #Tower was also built, which survives to this day. In 1821, the leader of the revolution in Halkidiki, Emmanuel Papas, had his headquarters in Pyrgos.
The feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul on June 29-30 is of interest. The liturgy is held in the small church of Agios Pavlos, which is located at the entrance of the village. It is actually a Macedonian tomb carved into the rocky rocks of the village, which causes the awe of visitors, as according to tradition the #Apostle #Paul took refuge there to escape his persecutors. Inside it are formed rooms and an underground corridor, which leads to the sanctum.
The #village has a remarkable #tourist infrastructure, which includes #luxury #hotels, #rooms for rent, #restaurants, ouzo, #taverns, fish taverns, cafes, pastry shops, etc. Those who want night entertainment can, in addition to the young #bars, choose entertainment centers with live music.
In the area of the Tower, #cultural #events take place throughout the summer season, which are part of the Kassandra #Festival.
#Tourists visit the area both for multi-day #holidays and to spend a beautiful #weekend since it is very close to Thessaloniki and has clean beaches, restaurants and fish taverns with fresh fish. Nea Fokaia is located near Sani, an #international tourist #resort that you should definitely visit during your stay in the area.
At the #port of the village dominates a 17-meter-high Byzantine tower that belonged to a shareholder of the monastery of Agios Pavlos and was during the revolution of 1821 the headquarters of the leader of the revolution in Halkidiki, Emmanuel Papas. The village #festival takes place every summer on June 29 and 30 on the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul.
On the heights west of Nea Fokaia, the site of a #Roman settlement has been identified, based on surface pottery, which is probably identified with the ancient city of Clitae. The village is a refugee settlement, which was built on the site of old shares from Agioreitis. Those who founded the settlement came from Phocaea in Asia Minor, a city near Smyrna, hence the current name. After the destruction of Smyrna in 1922, the state granted (in fact, it sold to the refugees through the E.A.P, and the loans granted to them had a clause in the gold pound of England) the area consisting of monasteries to the #refugees. The place inhabited since prehistoric times. A 15th century tower is preserved on the beach of the village. It is likely that it was built in 1407. The role of this tower was to protect the stock of #Monastery of Saint Paul. Until 1930, the rest of the Metohi buildings were also preserved. The Shrine of Saint Paul is an underground chamber, possibly an ancient tomb and a later Byzantine church. According to tradition, the Apostle Paul secretly baptized Christians there when he was in #Chalkidiki.
