    Would the Graham Farish fowler 4F chassis work on the other 009 kits peco make?

    Nice There nice little kits! I have 2 GVT body's in 009, only one chassis though so I really need to get another, one of the body's I built and the other I got second hand. I know what you mean about the flash, i think the tooling is getting a bit tried! One thing with your model is it seems to sit quite high on the chassis, more so than my one which is on a 94xx chassis which may explain your issues with coupling, mine couples fine. Thanks for sharing!

      With the chassis, using the Kato chassis I didn't construct the kit around the chassis like it recommends, I added it on at the end so I had to hack away some material underneath, I could have got it better though. I have heard of other people having this issue with the couplings though.

    Does the Kato 11-103 chassis (I presume that’s the one you used) require any modification to fit into the body? I’m planning to buy one of the body kits. The kit says to use the pannier tank chassis, but the layout I own has very tight curves so a 0-4-0 would be more ideal.

    How do u power it as I'm thinking of powering my peco 009 track by using my old hornby cd controller ??

    • @TheLocomotiveMan
      @TheLocomotiveMan  Před 8 lety +1

      That should work, that's what I've done. Even though there are controllers which are more suitable. I just cut off the standard hornby connecting piece which goes into the track and soldered in onto the rails. Alternatively crocodile clips would do.

    i am thinking of buying this set but i often worry about small things so i was wondering is there anything like lead in the metal that peco used for this kit.

    • @TheLocomotiveMan
      @TheLocomotiveMan  Před 8 lety

      No, not at all. It's all die cast whitemetal, or otherwise known as pewter. There's nothing harmful about it, it's even considered a rare metal and is sometimes used in jewellery.

      I think i used www.phoenix-paints.co.uk/ GWR green spray paint for the main body, a pot of signal red for the buffers, a grey i cant remember for the roof, a pot of brass effect for some of the fittings and I used humbrol gloss black for the skirts. You might be better off just completely using tins of humbrol or something similar from your local model shop though since there are new laws around mail ordering paints. It really does pay off puttinng some effort into painting it since it makes or breaks how well the model comes out, i think i spent about two days painting this. But it depends on the level of detail you want personally.

    Would the actual chassis make the buffers the correct highg

      Games202 you can get a rough comparison of the size against the peco 009 flexitrack, let me know if your after anything in particular..
      Really, with the weight and chassis you don't get much better performance and detail wise for the price. However even though it's simple to construct (like an airfix kit) it does take care and time to produce a model as mint as I did, but it was well worth it and a satisfying project. It might be slightly cheaper to buy a 3D printed body for the Kato chassis from shapeways, however it won't run that well (not enough weight), the detail won't be as good and you won't have as much satisfaction as having built it yourself, just painted it.
      Cons are having to still cut the couplings off the Kato chassis and file away a little bit of plastic at the front of the chassis, don't be scared of it though! The beauty of it is that your doing this to a £10 chassis, not a £60 one! And you have to tidy up some of the castings with a file and craft knife.
      For me; 009 is all about having a go at producing a quality model yourself without the temptation of ready to run stock. I think this model is absolutely perfect as a first attempt and is simple enough to get right.
      Your welcome :)

      Games202 sounds awesome! Keep us updated with the progress. Well worth joining the gauge 009 Facebook group and 009 gauge society, there's plenty of people eager to share advice!

    As we all see the Kato.mechanism only creates mediocre performance what would do better would be 138 :1 gear reduction, coreless motor and flywheel. The are enough of those mechanisms on the market, o.k. the are 3 times more expensive than the Kato but performance is 100 times better.

      Bumface Farto yeah, it's a bit of a task to get it to sit relatively straight.
