- The USMC AV-8B Harrier performs its final public air show display at the 2024 MCAS Cherry Point Air Show. Shot on Sunday, May 12.
The USMC AV-8B Harrier II+ is a VSTOL capable close air support aircraft developed for the Royal Air Force. Known as the "Jump Jet" it has the ability to take off and land vertically, making it one of the most versatile attack aircraft in the world. Its Rolls Royce Pegasus engine uses four nozzles to vector thrust down (up to 15° forward) so that it can maneuver at zero air speed. Although subsonic, it is capable of reach speeds of 600 mph.
This is the final public display of this aircraft by the United States Marine Corps. There are currently two squadrons left in the USMC that operate the Harrier, both stationed at MCAS Cherry Point. The demo team is assigned to the VMA-231 Ace of Spades, and the other squadron is the VMA-223 Bulldogs. The Spanish and Italian Navies also operate the Harrier and will continue to fly it at air shows in Europe for a while. This demonstration included an extra high speed pass from behind the crowd to open (I didn't get a good shot of this) and a photo pass that we normally don't see. At the very end of the video, a cloud passes over and casts a shadow on the jet, symbolizing the sundown of the Harrier. Crazy timing. Also, please ignore the F-22 Raptor photobombing, nothing to see there.

I saw one of these at Drake air field in Fayetteville Arkansas in the 1980s. The pilot tried to take off vertical for several minutes but the vector thrust wouldn't cooperate. So he did a short take off and unrestricted climb, so loud. After several maneuvers he appeared to be landing; but came to a full stop 30 feet off the runway and did a perfect 360 degree spin and then dropped to the tarmac. II WILL NEVER FORGET IT.
People don't know how loud this plane is when it's in VTOL or STOL mode. I saw one do a demo in Oshkosh and it went into full VTOL mode with those nozzles pointed down and it was just as loud if not louder than Concorde taking off with full AB. The pitch of the sound is higher though as opposed to that low AB rumble.

The Harrier II is a relatively small jet and highly maneuverable, which makes it a hard target for enemy ground defenses. I love the Harrier, still an engineering marvel, hope it's around for several more years.
Man it was over 20 years ago now but seeing this live at Abbotsford air show was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. It totally breaks your brain seeing and hearing and feeling that jet come in and then watching it just stop in place like time is paused.
Had six of these aboard the USS Tarawa when I was deployed to Desert Storm. I believe it was the first time they deployed from a U.S. Navy vessel. I used to go up on the Island just to watch them take off and land.

I was there for the last flight my dad was vma542 in the 80s. He couldn’t make do to health problems and was at the va hospital in Durham. I recorded for him and boy was he pissed he missed it. Thanks for sharing. Still my favorite plane and always will
fantastic display,i remember the RAF scrapping the GR9 such a shame
They aren’t known for smart choices. They took gunpods off GR.9s to “save money” but that caused issues when close air support calls came in and the GR9s couldn’t help as a result. Or in the navy’s case, they made two big carriers… but no fighters for them aside from the F-35B which was very slow to enter service and still is suffering serious issues.
@@mmmmburgerz9442 thanks for your reply,growing up in the 70's the Harrier was always the one to watch at airshows etc & how it performed in the Falklands War,Gulf War etc it was always a favourite & when they retired them off for the F-35 & its costs including needing new Aircraft Carriers alot of British aviation enthusiast were gutted,as you said the F-35 is still having issues hence probably why the US is giving more funding to keep the F-15e up to spec & not sending the earlier models to AMARG

Our flight E was cool AF, I got stuck up there making tool pouches for my shop and made a few close friends... And it was in Yuma so i didn't mind being called the "stitch b****" for a while in trade for the A/C all day. Lol😉 (VMA-513)
What an amazing aircraft. I hope some find new lives in allied countries, private demonstration teams, or proudly sit in museums

Great bird…At the 75th anniversary of Naval Aviation air show in Pensacola, I watched a Harrier complete his impressive air show with a vertical landing with his gear up. Uneventful, but the Marine Aviator was devastated as he walked away from his gear up landing. As a Navy pilot myself I felt so bad for the pilot who walked away, head held low to face the music.
A marvel and a beauty.
I am so proud of our British innovation. This bird was doing vertical T/O & Landings 65 years before the F-35 !

I also think it’s cool that it doesn’t use a lift fan. Just vectors all its thrust to make it go up and/or forward. Theres no lift fan just riding along as it flies, reducing max g load for the B

It's a piece of crap and HELL to work on.
I was 41A (J-52) and we shared a hanger with 41T (Pegasus)..
I had to work on that motor for 6 months because the entire fleet got grounded for a #3 bearing failure, which required a 65% teardown on each motor. They require a special vertical stand as well so you can only repair so many at a time. For a regular motor like mine or the Hornets, you can work on as many as you can fit rails in your shop. For example, I had 6 rails(rolling horizontal stands. They are pulled to test cell on these rails) in my shop ready at all times. Tango (Pegasus shop) had 1 stand. All they had room for.

This was originaly going to be called the kestrel and it's larger supersonic sibling was going to be called the harrier(p1154), however due to budget cuts Hawker Sidely abandoned the larger faster jet in favour of the (p1127) ....this and so the harrier name was adopted.

I vividly remember the last time KCAE Columbia SC were visited by these incredible aircraft. Working the line Dept, I heard 2 inbound from Beaufort MCAS and heard the tower say DO not HOVER, cleared for the option. Well one DID and caught the tar on rw 11 on fire/fodded it out, Never saw them again.......

It was terrible to fly, the VTOL a worry but did its job. Been surpassed by better tech but an exceptional video one for the ages.
absolutely hated being in cherry point stationed in the barracks next to flight line listening to these bastards. try turning this on your soundbar, turning up the volume to real life level and then put it on repeat for 5 months straight. love to see them every now and then though
I still remember how loud they were doing touch and goes on our LPD. 10% tinnitus rating loud.

As the USMC will retiring the AV-8B in 2026, I don't understand why the final display is at the beginning of the Air Show season. Why they don't perfom all the year 2024? If someone have info about it let me know, I'm curious !
The demo team is assigned to the VMA-231 Ace of Spades, which will begin their transition to the F-35B this year. The VMA-223 Bulldogs will fly the Harrier until 2026.

What was the puff of black smoke from at 7:02?
Water being injected into the combustion chamber. Perfectly normal.
"Combat thrust" instead of afterburner. It was so cold in Afghan we had to drain the water tanks after every night flight or it would freeze and rupture. Made for accidental slip n slide at FOD walk in the morning.😅
It has amazing acceleration at low level better than the f35

There is nothing more exciting than watching an airplane sitting in the chocks. Said no one ever. Stop kissing the ground crew's butts and GET ON WITH IT! Jesus! Over two minutes before the damn thing even moves!
A few things:
1) This is the last demo ever. I wanted to capture everything from startup to shutdown.
2) The pegasus engine has a really unique sound, one that is nostalgic for a lot of people.
3) Don't hate on the ground crew. They are just as important to mission as the pilot is. I think the work they do is fascinating, and it's probably a reason why videos with the ground work perform better.
4) You have the ability as the viewer to scrub the video forward if you don't want to see it. Pointless complaint.

According to the organizers, this is the final public demo from the official USMC demo team. Title is not clickbait. There may be other public appearances, especially in Europe, but no more demos are planned.
Also, there are no Harriers left on the west coast, so I don't think you'll see one at Miramar. Not listed on the website, either.

Why retire this bird? Sometimes in war, you need planes with character. This 5th generation stuff and fly by wire stuff cannot always be trusted.
This is the real 6th Gen fighter jet. This will replace old F22 and F35 for sure.
