- Though often dismissed as a “beginner herb,” the health benefits of plantain leaf - and ways of working with this versatile herb - are many. Please join me to explore all things plantain with my dear friend and fellow herbalist, jim mcdonald.
For those of you who don’t yet know jim, here’s a bit more about him:
In 1994, jim mcdonald's life changed when he drank tea from a wild plant he harvested from the land he lived upon. Since those first sips of strange tea, his life in the woods and meadows of southeast michigan has been centered on the plants & ecosystems of that land, and how he might share their virtues to restore wellness with those around him. jim's approach to herbcraft is deeply rooted in the land he lives upon, and blends traditional european folk influences with 19th century eclectic and physiomedical vitalism, which he conveys with story, experience, humour, common sense and lore to students, clients, random passersby and readers of his website www.herbcraft.org. He's taught classes throughout north america and is currently alternately writing “Foundational Herbcraft” and “A Great Lakes Herbal,” in addition to articles for journals and other publications. jim is a community herbalist, a manic wildcrafter and medicine maker, and has been an ardent student of the most learned teachers of herbcraft… the plants themselves.
Listen in for:
► jim’s experience of working with plantain in his own life (Timestamp: 22:19)
► The most effective way to work with plantain for itchy, irritated, insect-bitten skin (33:03)
► How other herbal traditions can be a springboard for exploration (Timestamp: 44:22)
Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:
“So much of herbalism is in not the big claims of this does that, or this is that, or this is anti-bacterial or anti-inflammatory for this reason or that reason. It's finding the nuance of ‘Oh, this works best like this for this presentation and this kind of person.’” (Timestamp: 10:30)
jim shines at bringing curiosity, critical thought and common sense to working with herbs, matching herbs to people rather than mixing and matching herbs for X, Y, Z problem or disease. He’s an engaging teacher with a world of wisdom to share and I’m delighted to bring our conversation to you today!

I packed it in my cheek for an abscess. Instant relief and healed in 12 hours. My grandkids know to find plantain if they get a bug bite. 5yr old granddaughter ran around the schoolyard yelling to find plantain when her 7yr old brother got a bee sting. I have 5 budding herbalist and one due today❤ Thanks for sharing🙏
Oh, I love your sharing here today! Thank you for sharing your love of plants.
~Karin Rose
now ive learnt something new, thank you🍃
I have a chronic sore on my tongue due to two missing teeth. I chew on 2-3 fresh plantain leaves from my yard and the pain goes away immediately. I use the dried plaintain in the winter for my tongue. I dry the narrow leaf in the shade. Comes out green and fine. What a healing plant! I’m so grateful.
That’s awesome. How do you use the dried plantain ? Do you put it in water ? Also, can you share how you dry it in the shade ? Thank you 😊
My first love of weeds 😊 When I recommend a 'wild' tea to people for a particular problem, a lot of the time they will say I drank a cup and it didn't do anything or it didn't fix it. I answer by asking if the doctor gave you a prescription or told you to take a supplement would you only take one pill and say it didn't do anything or would you finish the prescription or take a bottle of supplementary vitamins for a few weeks or even months? Natural things are sometimes the same way.
Baby herbalist, former nursing student here. Thank you for sharing this information, I have to laugh as my first experience that drew me into studying herbalism was noticing a burdock and harvesting it to try a tea and Then noticing I had multiple forms of plantain in my yard & garden & started using it for everything, in salad, as a poultice, for poison ivy, for my husband's boils... it's amazing! I now have only 6 books, which I devoured but discovering you on CZcams is exciting and surprisingly emotional. 🥲 Blessings! 🙏
This was fantastic. I was so excited to see two of my favorite herbalists in one show talking about a plant I share with everyone. By the way, I'm also a knitter, and you are rocking that sweater! Thanks for a great show.
Awww, glad you enjoyed the show (and the sweater). :)
I like the sweater too@@HerbsWithRosalee
My brother and sister used to pay a company to come kill the weeds, and they did a bad job cuz they missed some plantain... I was grateful cuz I go organic and eat weeds... anyway my brother got a horrible spider bite and went to the er they prescribed antibiotics he couldn't get until the next day... I WAS SOOOO EXCITED I GOÞ TO SHOW THEM ÌM NOT CRAZY... I went in the front yard and got some plantain and crushed it up poultice style and put a bandage over it and he left it overnight and NEVER NEEDED THE ANTIBIOTICS ❤❤❤
Awesome story! Thank you for sharing!
I've learned so much from Jim. So glad you interviewed him here. Hope he does more with you. And I didn't know he went to my alma mater!
I'm always up for doing anything with Rosalee. She's a hero.
I just learned to identify plantain on my property this week! Now i see it everywhere!!!
The plantain plant has a very unique look to it, it's hard to mistake when harvesting. I enjoy just looking at the nature of the plant, the broadleaf in particularly. It was my second plant after the beautiful, sunny, delicious dandelion.
Thank you for this interview. I just can't get enough of jim's teachings. He makes things so easy to understand & remember.
So glad you enjoyed it! ~Karin Rose
thanks, Tracey!
Two of my very favorite things - Jim McDonald and plantain!!!
Thank you Rosalee for this incredible chat with Jim! I love how you both offered your genuine experiences with plantain.... as 'simple' as they seemed!
Thank you for a great interview, I like Jim's ideas. So great to hear so many of Plantain's gifts. The zinger for me when Jim mentioned Burning Bush! I have a 30 year old one growing in my backyard, never occurred it could also be medicinal.---Now I need to research!
Hi Rosalee and Jim McDonald you both inspire me keep up good job to heal the World. I am from Lesotho Southern Africa
I enjoyed this podcast so much! My yard is full of Broadleaf Plantain. It was the first tincture I used and made myself. I take it daily for many issues and have had wonderful success. But I just had to tell you it's my first go to for anything topical, insect bites, cuts scratches, and it works magic on steam burns, immediately takes away pain and leaves no trace of it, unfortunately , I burn my hands with steam quite often and it works everytime. Also on blood blisters, it draws out the blister and takes away the pain. I just soak it in the tincture.. Plantain is amazing! Thank you for sharing!
Plantain was literally my beginner herb. It is an interesting story. Years later it is still my favorite.
My first love of weeds. I tell people if I had known about plantain for itching when I was little, I would have looked like I was molding my whole childhood 🤣
The first tincture I ever made was plantain. I made it for my (then) teenage son who was experiencing some acne. It's a great herb. I plan to harvest some this summer, process it in a food processor with a dab of water, and freeze it in small containers. I'll probably tincture some as well. There are some herbs that I prefer to freeze instead of dry, and plantain is one of them. (also cilantro, basil, parsley, purslane, cleavers)
I love Jim's approach to herbalism and am so glad that you had him on your podcast/YT channel! You're both awesome herbalists.
Thanks for sharing. Did you use vodka for your tincture ? I’m going to make some soon
@@makeoversbymeme2077 Yes...I use 100 proof vodka for most of my tinctures. Best wishes!
This was SO good, thank you Rosalee and Jim.
Thank you so much for this great information and approach!!
Awesome information. I'm just learning about plantain
This is one of my Favorite plants!! And you 2 offer a Valuable Gift!! 💜Thank-you!! Also- Plantain juiced raw stimulates the Pituitary gland. 🌟
I enjoy the topical plantain very much
I LOVE all this learning! Thank you 🙏🏽😍🌱🌿
You are so welcome!
This is so good!
❤I just loved it !!!
Another amazing video!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks again.
Namaste
Thank you for your valuable information. We appreciate you both.
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching!
I didn’t catch the website for Jim’s plantain handout. Could you provide that again please. This was great information. Thank you to both of you.
jim is such an inspiration to me being a Michigan native! Hopefully I can take his Lindera course in person next year 🥰
Love to listen to both of you! Thank you for the video! I also am an herbalist and have used plantain for UTI with great success for multiple cases. I am wondering if you too have used it this way? I haven't read or seen this information but used it this way due to the hot condition of a UTI. Thank you for your response.
Hey Jim we need an herbal chew book! You sound like the man for that job.For those people outside working on the go, we don't have all our herbal accoutrements on us at the time. If an herbal chew and smoke book came out of this OMG what more could I ask for?
I can learn so much from him because of his personality. When he mentioned about the winged arrow that kills demons, I was like, what? But his way of interpreting this made so much sense. When he said Lyme disease my mind was doing like a thought search: an unwanted parasite that perhaps was in water or food. Or I was thinking Malaria. Then again, I'm nobody and I'm not an herbalist nor do I claim to be on. WOSH, glad I cleared that out. ;-) But yeah, he is pretty awesome and I wish I was financially stabled. I would support you Rosalee and good old Jimmy boy (ooh, just trying to be cut with you Jim.. no disrespect intended). Thank you Rosalee!
I use plantain for my acne face cream. My teens love it.
Plantain is everywhere here, and now that we have been here for 9 years also Yarrow is everywhere. We use them alternatively for stings and bites while we are gardening.
Hi Rosalie, thank you so much. You have such a special way of presenting your knowledge. I am going to purchase your book this morning online. I realize you do not have time to answer everyone’s questions. Should I be fortunate enough, may I ask, do you have any advice for me please, I was vain, foolish enough in my youth, started with Acrylic Nails, to hide one damadged nail. Years later, now 😊, had them removed. I now have paperthin nails, so bad, my nailbed is exposed. Not sure if they will ever grow back. I have listened to numerous herbal videos. Wondered about Comfrey/ Knitbone etc. But not sure how to help myself. If you have any advice it would be greatly appreciated. Still … thank you so much. Take care. 💗
Thanks for talking about drying the plantain. I found the most beautiful Narrowleaf plantain grown on a Biodynamic farm. I took it home, dried it and it looked just awful. I thought I must've done treated it badly on my way home to cause the browning. I will try your technique of snipping it crosswise before drying and see how that goes. Otherwise, I'm glad to know now that the broadleaf is the better choice for drying in general.
in the herb world there's alway something new to learn.
I really enjoyed this video! I have heard of Jim before but never seen anything of his. Seems like a fun guy!
I try to be!
@@herbcraft He succeeds but also he is a brilliant herbalist and teacher.
Plantain starts at 13:00
Check out the show notes for all the time stamps for the show.
Hello I had a rupture. And crap is in my joint fluids any ideas? Possible infectious
for part two you can talk about psyllium perhaps? thanks for another great episode. PS I'm also a knitter and look forward to seeing what you will be wearing/knitting up next along with a random Tori shout out and learning about herbs what the heck more could I want, you have become one of my absolute favorites like a dream come true🌼🌼 .
We do have a lot in common!
Great conversation! One thing I like to use it for, not mentioned, is arm pit detoxes. I dry it, powder it and mix it with French green clay, add water and make a pit mask. It also works really well as a face masks, it's so drawing, your face will be red afterwards!
now I want to do a whole class on topical armpit herbs!
@@herbcraft that would be amazing!
Awesome video and fabulous guest. Jim's enthusiasm and sense of humour are infectious and his knowledge is admirable. I"m so looking forward to researching him and his work. Thank you so much for sharing such valuable and under-appreciated information.
Glad you enjoyed it!
thanks for the kind words!
Enlighting! Thank you. Burning bush is agressive. I would not use it, it is a lyme tick magnet... and is outlawed in Pa
What you do with purple hibiscus ..
Do you think a plantain salve and tincture/extraction would help someone with the auto immune skin disease Pemphigus Vulgaris ?
I love using things that grow in my area, but like you say I'm open to other things I think come in very useful. The fartherest thing from Western Kentucky that I grow is spilanthes. It doesn't like to grow where I want it, but it's well worth the trouble.
I wonder if plantain can be used to draw out infections in dental cavitations.
Interesting interview. Thanks!
I've used plantain in a lot of dental infections, usually along side some combination of echinacea, yarrow, alder (not elder) and perhaps barberry or oregon grape root. Often helpful, but always important to remember that dental infections and get quite serious, and it's important to assess whether any herbal tactic is working. Don't let an infection get bad!
Can you make a nourishing infusion with plantain?
You can! It's not very tasty though.
Do you see anything wrong with rinsing plants with a vinegar water before drying or making salves? Will it take away beneficial properties? I wild forage mine.
I see no need to do this and I think it could also have a negative effect. It's best to harvest from clean areas and avoid washing.
I would like to get some plantain to buy from you or Jim how do I go about that
Here are some ways you can find herbs:
Hi! Rosalee doesn't sell herbs. Here are some ways you can find plantain and other herbs:
1. Search for herbal apothecaries near you.
2. Visit Rosalee’s listing of herb farms and wildcrafters within the US and Canada to find fresh herbs near you. www.herbalremediesadvice.org/Herb-Farms-Wildcrafters.html
3. Visit Mountain Rose Herbs, an online apothecary that sells high quality organic herbs. They are Rosalee’s first choice for herbs she’s not able to find near her. bit.ly/2KXdWIA
All the best,
Karin Rose
It's so funny hearing someone saying my name online😂
Hi Rosalie! I just heard someone talking to a "Rosalie" in the airport yesterday. Definitely sounded funny. :) There's not a lot of us out there.
Just bought some and it smells like mint.
Is it supposed to smell like mint?
No, it doesn't smell like mint. I would check with who you bought it from.
❤😅
Do you consider if the plant is feminine or masculine, as in she is good for this and he is good for that?
Non binary
Having flash backs to a childhood full of chewing this plant and slapping it on all manner of bug bites and stings. Then I remember going to a girls camp and the other girls being grossed out that I grabbed some random leaves, chewed it and spat it on her wasp sting, and the group leader lectured me about eating wild plants and I just stared at her like she was an idiot 😂 lost all respect from 12 year old me, the poor woman didnt know a thing about the outdoors.
This is a funny, yet sad, story. Thank you for sharing!
Plantain helped with poison ivy on me.
Thats cake size
Leave it up to a (very talented and wise) herbalist to realize the neti pot is the wrong species of the group..."So most of these are gravy boat vulgaris, our common species of gravy boat and this other gravy boat in fact is of a totally different family....we call it false gravy boat"😂
