- Taking these bass Cobalt Flatwounds by Ernie Ball for a spin! Do they sound like roundwound strings as they claim? Let me know in the comments!

Just put them on a Stingray 5. I tell you now this thing growls like a beast. Absolutely great. The biggest advantage of flats is that they don’t occupy as much frequency range as rounds. Therefore they sit better in the mix.
Nice demo, that bass is sick! 👍🏻
I love these on my Rickenbacker. They have great tone but also have a great rhythmic attack to them that I wasn't expecting.
I use these on my Stingray, great for taming some of its natural brightness. They are very versatile, and you can even slap on them. I agree with them losing brightness over time, I'm not quite into Bernard Edwards territory yet but it's getting there. One weird thing is they make your hands smell like metal, at least with my body chemistry.
I had them on my cheap SUB Stingray and I definitely got that "metal smell" even playing for just five minutes. I've since modified that bass and I'm indecisive between roundwounds or true flatwounds like Labellas.
Dude! They are made out of metal! 😁
Metal doesn't have a smell. It is 100% body chemistry.
Sure it does, and when it rusts even more
My fender player jazz is in shop now getting its annual setup , decided to try these for an upcoming gig! Quite impressed with the video! Thanks again!
I have these on a fretless jazz. They definitely don't get that same mwahh sound that rounds get. So yeah if you just want flats that sound just a bit brighter these are worth trying.
I have these on my Lakland 44-64 Custom fretless and Lakland DJ-4 Jazz bass. I am digging them so far.
Put a set on my stingray. They are about the same tension as rounds but feel smoother. They aren’t glassy smooth like some flats but feel more like a half-round. Brightness is there so they are a good alternative to rounds. So far I like them a lot.
I've had Rotosound monel flats on my pbass for almost a year now and I've started trying to play a wider variety of songs and some songs need a bit more growl. Would you say that these are good strings to grab if I'm trying to get more of the roundwound growl while still being able to imitate flatwounds with the tone rolled off?
Ah, my favorite strings. Honestly, I kinda don't care if they do or do not sound like rounds - they sound great on their own merit. I have them on all my basses.
Yeah same, I really like them and sound great!
Agreed
Perfect Strangers sold me on these strings haha 5:34
bro that axe is sweet!
Just subbed . Good review . I've been playing bass exactly a year by the end of the month . Can play full songs all the way through . However watching some of your chops definitely motivates me to keep practicing . Good strings however I always end up buying which ever I can afford which is Ernie Ball 40 - 95 or D'addario 40-95 . D'addario seem to keep their tone a little longer I've noticed . Best things about roundwounds is after 3 weeks they almost sound like a flatwound .
Well I would say that rounds sounds dead after the time, while flats keep their full rich dark fundamental sound which gets better with the age.
@@WakizashiSabre Okay , good to know I have a set of flats . They weren't cheap we'll see how they work out .
@@danadane2501 If you re not slap crazy, i am pretty sure, you ll find love for em. Gret in the mix without excessive volume, nice in feel.
@@WakizashiSabre Based on everything I've researched and what you've said . I would never put flats on my Jazz Bass ( Squire 70s Vibe ) . However the Precision Bass . That's exactly where I'm putting them . Already bought um because I got a good deal . So next string change they're going on . I do slap but honestly only 10 percent of the time . Can't stand basslines where slapping is put into the bass line just for the sake of it . This is of course only my humble opinion and personal preference . I'm really into old school Hardcore and Heavy Metal . Steve Harris ( Iron Maiden's mastermind ) makes flats sound incredible needless to say . That's all I got appreciate the advice .
holy cow are those bright! they really have their own sound to them.
Yeah they are! And come truly to life when processed through a preamp! I wouldn't categorize them to rounds or flat, they really are their own thing
I had early models of these and they tarnished/rusted quickly. Remember folks wipe your gear down after a show.
They sound a lot like Rotosound flats
Great video! Out of curiosity, did you actually trim the ends?
Thanks! Only the metal wire at the very ending
I have played Chromes for years and just recently tried Cobalts. - Chromes are still Brighter yet still having the big fundemental and they never die.
You're blessed with the right sweat or something cause i used to play chromes and i agree they are bright but my chromes were usually pretty thuddy within a month
But what do they sound like when the tone is on full bass boost?
If I didn't know what these are, I would think that they were low sustain Rotosound Rounds. I think I'm gonna give them a try. Hopefully, I'll see a better life expectancy than Rotosound Rounds.
What did you think of them?
But they look like with a half-roundwound
try the GHS pressurewounds
Will do!
I second this
Is that Big Elf at 5:22 ? Bats in the Belfry?
Sounded like he might've been trying to do London Calling?
How do they sound a year later?
A year later 😂. How often do you change or boil your strings?
@@stevefloydmusic4life you could use flats for 5 or 7 years without trouble.
Do these cobalt flats have a lot of tension? My only issue with flats is that they have high tension, I worry about what they can do to the neck of my bass.
They don't have a lot of tension, at least up to the 50-105 set. The 55-110 set of course has a bit more tension, but not so much in comparison to some other flat strings I've tried, such as Rotosounds
@@OliverTobyn cool, thanks i might give them a shot. I play bass in a punk band but love the feel of flats. I think these might just be the strings for me.
4:00 Love Cats lol
Cobalt flats sound OK, but they break too easily and get dead spots in them. Not worth the money to buy another set after a couple of weeks. Dadarrio chomes, although not as bright, last forever, even when you change them out then back several times.
Sound like rounds to me
Might as well buy round wound strings. I don't see the point. Really bright.
@@Cap683 On the contrary, I personally prefer the feel of flats, but for one of my basses I want to keep the brightness of rounds, so this could be what I'm looking for!
only awesome people run that bridge...
.50 gauge G String instead of .45. If you haven’t tried it you should check it out….highly recommended.
Does that mean the .50 has the same tension as the normal .45?
@@cp8wj2ur8k Not sure but my guess would be any difference, if at all, would be marginal.
Ernie Balls Sack. 2 sets i thought i found the holy grail. Opened up my gig bags a couple days later and RUST. FREAKIN RUST ON BOTH SETS. That's terrible.
You gotta buy coated if you live in a humid environment my dude
@@metalfan7270 - Thats the thing..those where the Cobalt Flats. The Cobalts are coated, correct?
@@sixsentsoldiers No, they aren't.
@@metalfan7270 - rotosounds, Daddario, gHs. None have turn to rusty shit like those ernie ballsacks cobalts. In humidity.
Too bright for me....
These sound like bad roundwounds. Bleh... Zero low end and lower mid. Just don't sound like a bass whatsoever.
A lot of the sound you're hearing is the pickups. They don't sound anything like that in my 60 reissue Jazz bass or 70s Jazz bass. They aren't quite as bright as a roundwound, but definitely not dead sounding like a traditional set of flats. And they do hold their character for quite a long time.
You‘re totally wrong. The low end is earthshaking. But in this clip they sound pretty clanky you‘re right. Trust me, usually flats deliver fantastic bottom end. And they sit far better in the mix.
I agree they sound awful here, and not doubt its the way he EQ'd this. lol HE is also playing with very long nails. idk what sound he was going for but... ya
@@followingnazarene don't take me wrong I'm a flatwound player lol. La Bella's is where it's at for me. Trying flats on guitar now! :)
Thanks for this review. Now I know that I don't like them. Sounds just like roundwound that I have already own. So I'll go looking for something else sounding really flat.
