I add bacteria producing enzymes once per month in order to facilitate the breakdown of solids. Things we put down the drain (e.g., detergents, cleansers, etc.) can inhibit breakdown. Pumped out every other year, my 44 year old septic tank and leach field work perfectly.

I agree. The only thing I missed was the distribution box. Your septic tank's job is to break down waste. But after that, we've got some liquid leftovers. Where do they go? Enter the D-box! The D-box is like a traffic cop. It sends the liquid waste (effluent), evenly into your drain field. It makes sure everything flows nice and smooth. But if the D-box gets lazy, we've got trouble. The waste might not spread evenly. Some parts of your drain field could get swamped. Believe me, that's not a fun time!

Plenty of sinks and showers/bathtubs don’t connect to the septic and have a separate gray water system. Which is very beneficial because it extends the life of your drain field by quite a bit

Ok.. So for a very small vacation place that is a cottage with a small kitchen, 1 bath and that is used maybe a few days a month.... How does that work? The septic system has been in place since 1950. No idea if it has ever been serviced or how it works and there is no access to it as far as I know. Is this a disaster waiting to happen? We have not installed a garbage disposal because we though it would be bad.

One bit of information that I'm looking for, that I cannot seem to be able to find anything on, is combining multiple types of septic systems together. Is it possible to daisy chain different types of septic systems together for the most robust cleaning, and least amount of maintenance? For example, I would like to use Soakaway worms in the first stage, because I am of the understanding that the worms will process nearly all solids. Meaning little to no need for the pumping out of sludge from the system. For the second stage, I would like to use an aerobic system. The bacteria should be able to handle any waste products that make it past the worms. From there, I would like to use a gravity system to a drain field. I am hoping that such a system would put only the cleanest and safest end product onto my land.

Of course, the wastewater treatment plant can be designed with the future development plan in mind. Say, after 10 or 20 years, a sewage treatment plant can be modified to a sewage treatment plant for 200 or 1000 houses, and so on. Waste of time and money and negative impact to the nature.
