    Corrections/additions:
    - V1 has four external carry straps as well, the second pair are pre-attached and stored in the side pockets.
    - The V2 straps are much softer and more comfortable than the V1s.

    Nice review! After watching this video, I opted for the V1 over the V2. Here is why:
    1. I preffer the charcoal darker color on the V1.
    2. I like the option of having a waist strap (hip strap) if I'm carring heavy weight that it is more stable while biking.
    3. I wonder if the magnetic holders for the shoulder strap may damage or mess my memory cards.
    4. I like the side flaps pockets on the V1 because I can have all my charging cables and adapters and organized while I can see them all at the same time and avoiding the feeling that I misplased or lost one.
    5. I bough it on eBay for $85.00 today!!!

But after seeing this minor differences, i think i'll stick with my V1 as well.. i like the build in waist strap although i rarely use it, and even though the side pocket sometime annoying where you have to open the whole thing just to get something, (where i thought V2 did better), organisation wise the V1 gives a clean feel.

    I have few problems with V1
    - weight
    - shoulder strap does not stay locked in like other bags
    - could have added small compartment in the main body
    Well V2 somehow made it worse
    - Now it's heavier!
    - Not a fan of these many added magnets
    - even though the secret compartment is nice, removing compartments from the sides is not good.

    I just received my V2 and love it!! I just don't like how there's not much organization pockets.. the only reason I went with version two is because its more rounded at the top. the materials are really nice and its great for an everyday bag. I was using the Nomatic bag and while it's a nice bag, it's just to small. like the length is to short. I can only fit my small lunch box and 32oz bottle in it. You can expand it but then it becomes really cumbersome. Great for traveling tho

    I just got a V1 a week ago so I still had the option to return it. I have taken it on a trip to Europe and I gotta say those new side flaps take out so much storage. Those bigger bags that cover the side flaps allow for so much more stuff to fit in the the organization with the smaller pockets and the colored stiching is amazing on the V1.
    Thanks for the video, I will stick with my V1 after watching this.

      Zojim4 these little garages on your V1 will sag soon enough if you use them enough. I have the V1 which I used for about a year and it took just a few months for the elasticity to become weak and not as tight. This was a widely reported problem with the bag and I’m sure that’s why Peak got rid of them.

    There's downside about adding too many magnets is the weight. From the spec sheet on PeakDesign site, an empty bag V2 weigh 2 KG!! That's a lot, and it's heavier than V1.

    • @whisperingdark
      @whisperingdark Před 4 lety

      Cryozeal I just picked up the V2 with the sale and I think you got your spec sheets mixed up (maybe you’re looking at the 30L?) but the EDB 20L V2 is 1.66kg and the EDB 20L V1 is 1.88kg. The V2 is lighter than the V1.

    • @cryozeal
      @cryozeal Před 3 lety

      @@whisperingdark I got that correct. 1.66 is the weight without dividers. When I said empty bag I meant without items inside but include dividers still. People who buy this bag usually use dividers anyway. This is what I copied from official site: 20L With Dividers: 2.01kg (4.43lb).

      The mod is super simple. I took some elastic cloth, it's the same elastic on shorts/briefs that go around the waist. I bought the elastic from a local dollar shop and basically just cut it to size and wrapped it around the loose strap area and sowed the elastic together forming a loop. It's a bit hard to describe in words but I hope that made sense.

    Bought my V2 backpack 4 days ago, it came one day and after 3 hours of use the whole strap tore off from the left shoulder pad (while I was using side access) and fell on the floor. The magnets that hold the straps varied in strength as well, one was stronger than the other. On top of that the mag latch paint (in black) can scratch off with just your fingernails; Made sure to test that before I returned it.

    My impression is that in order to gin access to the side panels, without removing the pack completely, you tug on the little loop just below the slide on one of the straps, that strap loosens, and you move the pack off of that shoulder. Once you're done, you reposition the loose strap and tug on it to balance it with the other side. How does that technique work if you have the loose ends of the shoulder straps tied down?

    • @wonked
      @wonked  Před 4 lety

      It doesn't work if they're tied down. But the mod I made to the V1 continues to allow the action you described. The mod doesn't tie down the loose straps it's just an elastic loop that keeps the loose straps from dangling. If you look at the sternum strap that comes with the backpack it has the same elastic loop, I just created the same loop as that.

    I have two V1s in different colours. V2 seems like a minimal update, just more magnets. Probably not worth the upgrade, especially with the simplified inner side pockets. I love the setup in the V1, the new minimalist pockets is a dealbreaker :/

    Great comparison video! I am curious to the size of the laptop compartment, can it fit a 15 inch pc? The V1 20l is too snug for anything other than a ultrabook or a MacBook, that’s really the only real problem I’ve had with the V1 backpack

    • @wonked
      @wonked  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes it can, I'm able to fit my old pre-touchbar MacBook Pro 15" in the V2.

    Hey, thanks a lot the detailed comparison. I have a few more questions about the bag. Hope you can spend some time for my doubts here! :)
    1. Does the V2 fits more item than the V1 when the maglatch is at the bottom latch? Noticed on the official site stated V2 is 22L whereas V1 is 18L when compressed.
    2. How do the new material feel? Are there any changes there?
    3. I have also watched your V1 review video comparing the Charcoal and Black. I have the V1 Black and it has the rough/scratchy feel on the external material. How does it compare to the Charcoal 1? Was thinking if I should go for Charcoal if I'm to get the V2.
    Thanks a lot in advance!!

    • @wonked
      @wonked  Před 4 lety +1

      1. The V2 seems to be ever so slightly larger, but it's so insignificant that you can treat it as the same size as the V1
      2. The material feels basically exactly the same both internal and external. The straps are softer and more comfortable though.
      3. It seems the same, a rough scratchy material.
      Hope this helps.

    Visually it seems the upper sides of the bag is better tightened up under the flap so that may be there is less risk of water entering the bag, but you didn't show that in detail enough

  • @EliotWong
    @EliotWong Před 4 lety

    The side flaps not opening as wide seems like it would make getting things in/out via side access, and packing the bag more challenging. Any thoughts?

    • @wonked
      @wonked  Před 4 lety

      Its actually not that big of an issue, you can apply some force and push them open wider, its just that they don't naturally fall open as wide.

    Good overview. I prefer my V1, the new inside pockets on the sides on the V2 are not as good. I'd be interested to know what you think of the material quality of the V2 versus the V1, I get a sense that the V2 is not a good as the V1 from an overall quality perspective - maybe Peak Design are trying to drive up their profit margins on these bags? My V1 is excellent and doesn't suffer from the misalignments that yours seemed to have.

    • @wonked
      @wonked  Před 4 lety

      So far in my short time with both bags, quality seems about the same. It'll take me much longer to know how V2 holds up over time.

    Nice review. Many improvements but I must say that the new pockets in the side flaps seem like a step backwards. I have all kinds of stuff hidden in there in my v1. I fear it would not fit in the v2.

      Wonk thanks! I have a platypod and a 6-7 inch maglight plus a couple of full sized pens and reading glasses. I was worried they are all too long to fit. What do you think? I’m sure all my batteries and circular filters etc would be fine.

    • @wonked
      @wonked  Před 4 lety +1

      Unfortunately I don't carry the same equipment you do but I just had a quick look and because the side pockets are now separated into an upper and lower portion longer items don't fit, the V1 will definitely be more versatile.
