One her 21st birthday, the Queen said- "I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong." She has kept this vow to this day with honour, dignity, grace, determination and pride. When the 85 year old came all the way to Australia, I was in the crowd, and let me tell you, it was one of the only times I've seen pure joy and patriotism.

Please stop referring to HRH The Duchess of Cambridge as Kate Middleton. Whether you love or loathe the royals please respect her name. I am a nobody from nowhere and people automatically accepted my marital status and name. It's just manners.

Yes plenty... just nobody in Washington D.C. seemingly. I just watched some of the "Diamond Jubilee" today on CNN. I guess I just would say as before they do honestly seem like kind and decent people. I guess I can appreciate just the tradition of it all. The English people seem to truly love them as well. It was a powerful moment when they did the fly over with the Lancaster bomber and the Spitfires. I couldn't help but wonder what memories were in the queens mind at that moment.

I love the way they came on a normal train and not by royal helicopter or car!

Well I guess that answers my question. I mean they seem like very decent people which is far more than I can say for 90% of our entire government.

People don’t even know why it’s called the Union Jack. It has the Jacobite cross imbedded in it. Thus the jack part. I don’t believe there’s any union although the Scottish cross is imbedded as well

bass13mary Some people don't even know that it is the Union Flag. It is a jack when flown on a ship, as was originally intended in 1606 when it was introduced.

What a great day, I've never seen Leicester so busy and excited.
With regards to the Republicans spouting off on here, a little snippet from the local newspaper:
"In addition to the tens of thousands lining the streets of Leicester to welcome the Royals, it is neccesarry for balance to acknowledge the Anti-Monarchy group "Republic" who held a counter-demonstration on the day. Five people showed up. By lunchtime, their numbers swelled. To six."

I am an American so I will just get that out of the way but what purpose does the royal family really serve anymore? I am just trying to understand it. Do they have any say in government affairs or just perhaps some influence? If they are doing things for the country that is good, but what roll do they actually have in England?

I just dont want to think what will happen in England when queen will pass out...omg, this is going to be terrible, all bussines all tv channels everything will talk about queen and every shop will be closed and all england will stop in blink of an eye. all respect to queen and god let her life for long long time but eventually she will pass and it will be horrible to hear that for me and for English market.
