    People watching this. DO NOT pry the edge of the valve cover up with a metal object like he does in the video. The metal on the engine is made of a high grade aluminum but it can still bend. If you pry with a metal tool you can bend the edge and cause a permanent leak. Also, DO NOT turn the dirty valve cover over above the open engine block and let the dirt fall in the engine. That will cause major problems.

      @monarrez1234 Před 4 lety

      Okay, then what would you use to pry it open?

      @@monarrez1234 I used a thin strong plastic trim removal tool. I just pried slightly around the entire valve cover until it came off. Wasn't too hard. DO NOT use a metal object.

      Martin is a 100%right it's a big No No to use a steel pry bar between surfaces especially as most of today's engines are alluminion heads block etc this kind of practise can do severe damage causing leaks etc

      Also DO NOT pry the spark plug seals out like he did. Prying against the brittle plastic like that is a sure fire way to crack the cover. It's better to lightly tap them out from the other side. That way the force is spread across the entire valve cover. For more protection put the cover on a towel to keep from marking the outer edge.

      Absolutely correct. The valve maker will only help a little, I'm glad you pointed this out. You will reblow your gasket because of the extra space. When machining parts you literally can't see a difference with a magnifying glass

    Nice overview of the operation. Same cylinder in a 2010 blue model failed so it must be a design issue. The rtv in this case is a good touch.

      Yeah lots of design issues with Elantra lol, like the weather stripping in side the dash, the third brake light, and the steering coupler

    @4:40 mechanic starts hammering engine.
    Me: "He's a real mechanic."
    My wife: "What is it with you and hammers?"
    Me: "No problem in world that can't be fixed with hammer. It's the man of the tools."

    For anyone else that watches this for some insight on how to do this job. Do NOT hit the valve cover. It's made of plastic and can easily crack. Instead use a small flathead screwdriver or pry bar to gently pry it off starting with the corners.
    Secondly, use a paint scraper to clean the old RTV/silicone off, it should only be a small amount in a few spots. Then use a can or two of brake clean to clear away oil and grime. Be sure that you get the gasket surfaces as pristine as possible, this will ensure a good seal.

    Do you have to drain oil and coolant to change the valve cover? is it worth changing fuel injectors while at it?

    I think I bent some heads or something when I busted the timing belt so at home fix should be like 200 for parts and 500-600 to get those heads machined but I havnt gotten them out yet, vs the 2300-3100 I was quoted at a few stores

I had to put some gasket maker on It and say screw this if I wanna replace the valve cover gasket I got to replace the spark plug wires too because as of now the gasket on those are over with so I cant even do this until I replace those too
