Mike Mangini Dream Theater Soundcheck

  • This Video's timeline is in reverse order. There is a playthrough of Invisible Monster 1st half of the song. I will discuss this in my upcoming class on the DT 2022 Tour Recap. It is from a soundcheck. The venues are cold and it can dangerous to hit too hard to early. Every case of a peer or student of mine getting wrist injuries came from playing in cold venues, or some came from gripping too hard being nervous or not warmed up.

As insane as he is technically, he doesn’t overplay. He knows exactly what the music calls for: when to lay back and when to go nuts. A true musician.

Right, and especially in a band like Dream Theater, where the “temptation” to overplay is huge

After seeing them in Orlando, I can tell ya that whatever he's doing is working because his playing was so damn consistent and sharp from beginning to end.
