Advance Australia Fair (Long Choral Version) - Sydney Conservatorium Chorale

  • "Advance Australia Fair" was composed in the late 19th century by Peter Dodds McCormick under the pen-name "Amicus" (which means "friend" in Latin). It was first performed by Andrew Fairfax at a Highland Society function in Sydney on 30 November 1878. The song quickly gained popularity and an amended version was sung by a choir of around 10,000 at the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901. In 1907 the Australian Government awarded McCormick £100 for his composition.
In a letter to R.B. Fuller, dated 1 August 1913, McCormick described the circumstances that inspired him to write "Advance Australia Fair":
One night I attended a great concert in the Exhibition Building, when all the National Anthems of the world were to be sung by a large choir with band accompaniment. This was very nicely done, but I felt very aggravated that there was not one note for Australia. On the way home in a bus, I concocted the first verse of my song & when I got home I set it to music. I first wrote it in the Tonic Sol-fa notation, then transcribed it into the Old Notation, & I tried it over on an instrument next morning, & found it correct. Strange to say there has not been a note of it altered since. Some alteration has been made in the wording, but the sense is the same. It seemed to me to be like an inspiration, & I wrote the words & music with the greatest ease.
The earliest known sound recording of "Advance Australia Fair" appears in The Landing of the Australian Troops in Egypt (circa 1916), a short commercial recording dramatising the arrival of Australian troops in Egypt en route to Gallipoli.
Before its adoption as Australia's national anthem, "Advance Australia Fair" had considerable use elsewhere. For example, Australia's national broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Commission, used it to announce its news bulletins until 1952. It was also frequently played at the start or end of official functions. Towards the end of World War II it was played in picture theatres after "God Save the King" and the American national anthem.

I wish the National Anthem was sung in this beautiful form more often instead of the dumbed down crooning versions so often heard. It really does sound like the anthem of a proud nation instead of the limp cabaret style renditions so popular these days.

    AUSTRALIA
    Oh, Australia of the ocean,
Bobbing like a cork on water,
    Floating, ducking in the daylight,
    Never drifting toward New Zealand,
    Regal envy of the others,
Lots of woods and lots of outback,
Many bushes in the west part,
    Little water in the middle,
    Smiley faces of the children,
    Chasing cattle through the cities,
    Oh, Australia of the ocean,
Nestled in the pouch of freedom,
Nursing from the teats of justice,
Hopping down the paths of good-time,
We are happy to be on you.
But if one day come invaders,
    We’ll defend you, O Australia
We will hit their heads with creekwood
We will shove them in the corncrib,
We will kick them in the marbles,
We will twist their ears with pliers,
We'll put up their noses, insects,
We'll put pellets in their pudding,
We'll grab fistfuls of their stomachs,
We'll drop koalas down their trousers,
    So, advance you, fair Australia!

Since the government-imposed lockdowns, forced "vaccinations" (which threatened people's livelihoods if they didn't comply and have in significant numbers actually caused physical harm), the divisions created between families and friends, the virtual totalitarianism which now reigns in most states of this once *free* country - Australia's beautiful national anthem no longer applies! 2019-2022 will never be forgotten by many of us, and those that have chosen to ignore or forget will reap the consequences along with the rest of us.

TheDankCrystal It's neither a compliment nor an insult. It's a fact about this rugged ancient land. BTW, let Australia have a more appropriate flag to represent it's sovereign status and multicultural society.

    • @syndos8900
      @syndos8900 Před 9 lety +1

241 Unity I am Australian, and I think we should get a new flag... But I also don't. The flag has been integrated into our memories, changing it would cause outcry because the flag is pretty old and people look up to it. Its almost like trying to be patriotic towards the ISIS flag but in a less sinister manor...

    • @tyleroakley7308
      @tyleroakley7308 Před 9 lety +1

TheDankCrystal Countries that were under British control used a Union Jack at the top left hand corner to indicate that they are totally subordinated to the British colonial government. After they became independent, a new constitution, republic, prime minister and president replaced the crown and the colonial governor. It necessitates the need to design a new flag to reflect the new nation sovereign to itself which is no longer subordinated to Britain. It is inappropriate for an independent nation albeit in the commonwealth to fly a flag that suggest subordination or being a colony of another nation. Australia was a colony but no longer is. High time to evolve into a new symbol. Many countries changed their flag as their politics, sovereign status and demographics change
Australia is a separate different nation to that of the UK, Though formerly a British colony, it is now an independent commonwealth and has developed its own symbols-kangaroo, golden wattle, boomerang, green and gold colours. Even the English language has an Aussie flavor totally different to the accent spoken in Britain. In addition to that, more than half of Australia's population is not of British [English, Irish or Scottish] decent but many are of Italian, Greek, Turkish, Lebanese, Chinese, etc, etc. Also to recognize indigenous Australians as the rightful and original land owners since time immemorial, aboriginal symbols can be adopted along with Aussie Pacific symbols with a more modern multicultural symbol for the flag to be truly inclusive of the WHOLE nation.
