- Lady's Position is difficult! In this video, Kora goes into detail about how she achieves and maintains her dance position when she dances Standard or Smooth. It's a little odd, but it looks great in partnership!
Not only does she give you the rundown on how to achieve this position, but she also outlines the exercises she uses and teaches to her own students.

You are incredible. Thank you so much for this amazing video. Keep them coming.
Yes, great explanation!
Yes, very important and helpful tips that my body should remember!! Thank you😃
Best explanation I've found. Thanks I'm loving your videos as you are very clear for both lady & man excellent teaching thank you for sharing (uk)
Wonderfull explanation. thx!
I have just found your video. Thank you so much for this very clear and detailed explanation. I struggle with maintaining my frame throughout ballroom and I will certainly incorporate your tips. Finally I have something I can really work with.
Great! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this topic!!🤗😘 I'm senior lady dancer and also struggle with hight diff with my partner! And I always being told not to keep up my right hip.....but your demonstration is so detailed and well explained, I'm looking forward to try your way at my nearest training session. BTW I even did not notice your high difference before... OMG! It should work for me as well 😊
Thank you so much!!!! The way you explain this really clicked for me. Can you do a video about CBMP?
Thank you so much for doing this video. I'm going to add the exercises you gave as a way for me to build more awareness of my position.
Wonderful!
This video is so informative and clear. Thank you so much.
I'm so happy you liked it!
This was so helpful! Will definitely be watching a million times lol. This really helped me understand the proper alignment of my back with shoulders and my legs because I tend to bend from my back. Thank you!!!
We're so happy this was helpful! A lot of ladies arch their lower backs, which actually puts more strain on the neck. The stronger your core, the more efficiently your entire body can work to create big shapes without undue strain on the neck.
Thanks ,👍👍👍👍👍
Interesting to watch even from the leader perspective.
Kora, thank you so much for this tutorial! Instruction about lady's position is very rare to come by. I am about 9 inches shorter than my partner (!) so your tips for coping with this are fantastic. Kora and Simeon, your instruction and presentation are always so thorough and clear. I'm always super excited when you publish new videos! I have been studying your Latin Barre course which is also excellent. Thanks again!
We're so happy to hear that! Videos about Lady's position, especially done BY LADIES, are rare, which is why we decided to make this video and we'll continue to add for the Lady's part in the future!
Same here! My partner is much taller than me, so this really helped!
It will take some time for me to process all the gold nuggets in this video. The presentation of both the description and the body position opened my eyes a little wider! As a leader in a social dance environment, I have noticed how many different ways followers connect but this is the first clear explanation of the technical and technique from the followers perspective. I will be more aware of how my partners and I connect. Thank you!
i know it's quite randomly asking but does anyone know of a good website to watch new series online?
@Mayson Kade flixportal =)
@Esteban Arthur Thanks, I signed up and it seems to work :D I really appreciate it !
@Mayson Kade Glad I could help :D
Thank you so much for sharing, and with such a detailed explanation!! I especially appreciate your attention to the hip position, I believe, this is the first time I come by an instruction that actually takes this body part into account thoroughly!
Do you plan to make videos on other types of lady frames too? It would be great to see the differences visualized ^_^
Also, I dance with a partner who is about the same height as myself, even a bit shorter, so it would be great if you could give some additional tips for couples like ours =)
Yes, we plan to continue describing the many differences between lady's approach and man's, since they are so different and so rarely differentiated in explanations!
@@SKDancesport Thank you! I'll be looking forward to it =)
Thank you Kora and Simeon for this video! I have definitely picked up some tips. Would you also consider doing a video on ladies left wrist and hand position in the ballroom hold especially when your partner is taller than you . How do you keep your wrist down? Mine always creeps up ( I blame the hight difference :)) is there any tricks or exercises you can recommend to keep the wrist down?
That's a tough one to refer to without seeing exactly what you're doing. That seems like something that needs to be addressed in a private lesson. That being said, try putting a coin between the heel of your thumb and the heel of his thumb while dancing. This will give you immediate feedback if your wrist lifts.
@@SKDancesport Thank you for the tip. Will definitely try that
Ciao ti seguo e mi piace molto come insegno. Il problema è che non parlo inglese. Sono italiana. Sarebbe bello poter comunicare con te esporti le mie difficoltà nel mantenere la postura corretta. Grazie. Buona giornata
Question when you raise your right hip do you bend your left knee so the left hip drops? Or do you lift your foot slightly off the ground to raise your hip?
Neither! Both of your knees should always be bent anyways. The right hip lifts as a consequence of stretching the upper body to the left and with a slight contraction in the right side.
i (a follow) am longer than my partner, can you do a topic about the ladys position when this is the case?
Turn knees to right.
Are the man's hips kept level during closed hold and his right hip picked up in promenade?
Kora, when I look at you next to Simeon, you don't look that short at all. Can you be specific re your height and his? And, when you dance in heels, how high a heel do you use and do you adjust accordingly?
From Kora: I am 5'3", Simeon is 5'10" so we have a 7" height difference... which is pretty substantial in Ballroom terms! Competitively I wear a 2 1/2" heel, but remember that this only helps me when I'm on a flat foot. None of our dance shoes have a platform, so I'm always the same height when I'm on my toes, no matter the heel height. 😊
@@SKDancesport Thanks, Kora. I appreciate your addressing issues like this. I have a bigger height difference so I always feel a little uncomfortable. Hope the baby is doing well and giving you and Simeon great joy.
A lot of considerations regarding the position and hold are eminently personal, and each couple has unique characteristics. However I find the "right hip high" idea somewhat dangerous; my take on this (as a man) is that the lady's "curve" should be generated in the upper spine only (above the breastbone), and is slightly back and left into the man's hand. Only the head turns and the shoulders are kept completely parallel to the man (at least in the closed facing position). Furthermore as a matter of "style" I don't think the lady's arms should ever appear "lifted" and ideally her elbows are about the height of her shoulders. If the height difference is substantial it is the man's arms that adjust lower.
So much of it depends on the individual! But as I (Kora) stated at the beginning of this tutorial, I am small, much smaller than many of my competitors, so if I generated my curve only in the upper spine, without including my hips, then I would invariably look too small in the topline. And again, as far as the arm, I had to lift my arm very high. I'm just short! Another great example of a couple who follows the same principals (for the same reasons) are Marat Gimaev and Alina Basyuk, who have an even greater height difference than Simeon and me! But though our arms may be lifted high and stretched, they are certainly not overly toned... and therein lies the secret! ;)
@@SKDancesport Yes, I agree that the shape would be smaller, at least statically, but having the weight more forward makes the lady far better balanced and responsive to the man's action. It is sadly something that has been largely lost. Having the arms lower would also not be a problem if the man lowered his -- the "elbows high and in line with the back" look for the man is functionally absurd, and has not been a positive development at all in my opinion. But I suppose if you are dancing competitively in 2021 it is something that you just have to do even if it is a net detriment to everything else.
👍👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Any tips on when the lady is the slightly taller one in the partnership?
The lady must bend into her knees more and the man actually must create a bigger left curve than normal in order to create proper balance. Richard and Janet Gleave were 8 time world champions back in the 1970s and Janet was slightly taller than Richard. Because of their height distribution, they are often credited for creating the "body" style of Standard Dancing, which shows the man creating more of a curve and extension than in other styles.
Axis need be not crooked !
I never understood why the couple has to be so desperately far apart from each other up top. ( bad breath?) It's something I can not stop thinking about when I watch these dances. Sorry. No, I'm not trying to make fun of you, I really want to know why. It looks very uncomfortable for her.
It has to do with the weight balance of the partnership. The head is a heavy appendage. By keeping the heads on the outside of the frame, the weight of the heads can be used in different ways to create momentum. The lady's head must be further away from the center of the partnership than the man's because, usually, the lady weighs less than the man. It can be uncomfortable, but it can also be a really amazing feel when you're able to throw your head weight and correctly use it to create momentum.
