The only problem with this is that the japanese picture of "chubby" or "too skinny" is a whole different scale than in western countries....what's normal in my home country is "chubby" to them.
there is actually a video from Rachel & Jun talking abt this. they show in the video 8 body types and the comments of Japanese ppl on the web abt these body type. according to this it's pretty similar to European views, I'd say.

I’m Dutch and nearly 15 cm taller than my Japanese boyfriend. Sometimes I’m insecure, but he says he doesn’t care about my size because he loves me. He also really likes my long legs.
Other people on the street probably think we are a strange looking couple, as everybody has many ideals and opinions. I don’t care AT ALL about them, because as many ideals other people have for their dream partner, they havent found theirs, and I on the other hand have found mine ☺️. I think this is interesting, we all have different types, likes and dislikes. I've dated girls who are taller, shorter and the same height too. Heavier, skinnier than me. Big, small and medium sized boobs. Big butt, small butt. I'm more into their hobbies and character. Even if a girl is beautiful but she and I can't get along then I get turned off pretty easily.
165 cm and 50 kg?? dude.. that's borderline underweight.. Also to the guy that said he likes "chubby girls" I could very well be wrong about this but considering Japanese standards he was probably referring to a girl that has a semi voluptuous figure and not necessarily someone who is truly chubby.
As a guy I personally identify more with the dude that said that as long as you like them then that is fine. HOWEVER, being realistic, we know we live in a very superficial world. Whether we like it or not the first impression we give off is how we look physically. So for myself I actually do not care about weight that much as long as she has a cute face and beautiful eyes, and obviously a personality that resonated with my own which would include having the same interests.
Nevertheless, if a person does not want to be with you JUST because of things you can change like your weight then you probably are better off not being with that person. In fact, they are doing you a service by sparing you of their extremely superficial personality. At least, that is what I think.
I'd have to agree with you on that, generally speaking Japanese people are smaller. Chubby to a Japanese man would therefore not be very "chubby" at all, but compared to everyone else maybe.
+AvatarMaster9x Yes, Japanese 'chubby' and western 'chubby' are a world apart, our 'chubby' is fat to them. They do have great social pressure to be skinny, way too much to be healthy, which is why there are so many eating disorders, not that you'll hear too much talk of it. To be fair, we are built differently too so there is that. Any western woman who lives there can tell you finding clothes is difficult, even if you are very slim as a westerner because we are simply larger. Our rib cages for example are bigger. Good luck finding a bra in Japan and it's not the cup size that is the issue, it is the band that goes around, they are too small for us. A shirt in a proper size can be found but so many times, the sleeves are too short. Hips and pants, uh oh. So 165/50 is all right for them, it wouldn't be underweight. When you are 170cm tall and a western female things get really funny, fast. I couldn't agree with you more though, personality should be what counts, common interests, that people mash well, etc.
+AlatarielNerwen I do definitely understand that Japanese people, and Asian people in general, have a different built than Westerners. However the 165 cm and 50 kg IS borderline underweight according to the US BMI which should be the most standardized of all the BMIs as it should take into account all of the different races that live in the US. So while I still agree with you on almost all of your points I did want to reiterate that *objectively* 165 cm and 50 kg is borderline underweight.
+AvatarMaster9x Actually my bad, you're right, it is borderline (we are not talking individual people of course, as that varies). I went and checked, and it is just borderline. But really, in Japan, nobody would blink at the weight, because BMI doesn't take into account the ethnic differences in peoples, which is why Japan has a lower number for obesity than we do, it's 25, not 30 there. They really are petite in body types, I think you can mostly see that the best when you actually find yourself there. Conversely, when you visit a doctor there as a Westerner, you might find yourself at the end of an unpleasant rant how you need to be thinner, because they are failing to take into account our body types.
But they definitely do have too much social pressure to be skinny, as they have the predominant cultural ideal of skinny (and small) is beautiful and it does lead to unhealthiness. It is nicely demonstrated in this video. No idea when and if that will change. Hopefully at least the talk of EDs will become something less taboo and people will be able to seek help more easily.
AlatarielNerwen Well I honestly do not know if BMI around the world is standardized or not, but supposing it is not then then that brings up 2 major points. 1) If Japan's obesity cut off is in fact 25 like you say, then based on physical examination alone a physician would be able to tell if the person is underweight or not and the physical appearance of someone who is 165 cm and 50 kg would be consistent with a belief of them being underweight. 2) If it is not standardized then like i said the American one should be the most standardized out of all them since america is one of the countries with the most diversity so it should take all that diversity into account which would include the asian populous.
Also, actually I do know about the built type of asians, you actually do not have to go to Japan to see asian people (although you would probably get a better sense of just Japanese people's body types if you went to Japan) as there are many asians in the US in it of itself. Nevertheless, my point was none of that, my point was that *objectively*, whether based on the BMI or just by physical examination alone, any physician would be able to tell you that 165 cm and 50 kg is underweight/borderline.

The avarage weight for japanese women is actually a 110 pounds for women between 20-24. The age group with the highest avarage weight is women between 45-49 and they weigh 117 pounds :) So in Japan, that's considered a healthy normal weight. The obesity epidemic haven't quite hit Japan hard, so the averages haven't been messed with.
If you look at america, the avarage weight used to look more like the japanese back earlier in the century. The avarage weight has even increased by 30 pounds from the 60's till present day. That's crazy. So just remember, that "avarage" doesn't mean healthy. It just means that's what there is most of. And in a obese country, that's not a good thing to be.

If a woman is very tall for example, her weight needs to be much higher than 110 pounds usually! But yes in that sense, it is accurate :)
