I'm Palestinian and many of our neighbours were black Palestinians. During my elementary school years, my best friend Sabir was black, and he lived halfway between my home and school. Most days when walking to school, I would pass by his home, his mother would give each of us us a cup of sweet mint tea and a dry tea cake, and after about 5 minutes, we would head off to school together. I live in a different country now but visit family in Palestine once or twice a year. Sabir and I are still friends to this day, and he is usually one of the first to come to welcome me back. Sweet memories.

As an American Muslim I can honestly say the Palestinian people have been some of the most warm, strong, and humble people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
I'm from Chicago too, Southside. Many of my high school classmates were Palestinian. Cool as cucumbers and low key reminded me of Black folks. That was my first impression. Even as I've gotten older, I've never sensed prejudice from Palestinians toward me. Nice video. Everyone was cool and friendly.

I'm a Jamaican, in March 2019 I went to Istanbul, Turkey, on my own, only my travel agent, my daughter and her father knew where I was, it was a present from them for a belated birthday gift, I wanted to go somewhere I have never been before and so Turkey it was. Difference in culture and social norms. The same feeling I sense and treatment i receive living in the uk as a black man is the same as many other places I've travelled to in the world. Theres always this fear, suspicion and unease when people see me walking down the street. Some people will tell you that I'm just being paranoid but they're a part of the problem. It's not blatant racism that I experience but it is alot of people fearing me based on me being a black man. That in itself is racist because when you fear someone you want nothing to do with that person. Over 10 years ago I travelled to Hungary with a friend who was Hungarian. We stayed in a small town. We walked around the town most days. I've never felt insecure about being the only black person somewhere but I found it strange that in a majority of tens of thousands of white people, that they could be so uncomfortable when seeing 1 black man. One day we were invited to a party and the mayor of the town was there. Later in the evening my friend told me that the mayor had insulted me in Hungarian as I was standing next to him. He had said "what's this nigger doing here". If you're a black person travelling you need to have a certain mindset. You need mental and emotional strength. It can help being an outgoing person because people let their guard down. Many people see "black" skin colour as inferior. I've had many more positive experiences while travelling but for me the fact that the race issue always seems to be there is so tiring. Its tiring when walking down the street and standing out for the wrong reasons. Its different when I go to predominantly black countries. In Barbados I blended in. I was invisible. No issues. I was like one of the locals. The world is too fearful.

Difference in culture and social norms. In Palestine, it is not uncommon that any Black man may find himself hugged and touched affectionately by complete strangers throughout his day JUST having day to day conversation while traveling or working. That doesn’t happen in America and Europe. When people touch you, it makes you feel seen, like you matter and are worthy of love. The man I spoke was not used to getting touched in America and realized the difference when he traveled to Palestine.

I love this video. Alot of people were curious, open and friendly with you. You captured a simple aspect of Palestinian life by walking down the street and filming. One of the reasons I stopped travelling is because in many countries around the world the reaction was the opposite of people in this video if you're a black man. Good work visual poet.
@Essequibo river Amazona In my experience its actually the way of the world. The same feeling I sense and treatment i receive living in the uk as a black man is the same as many other places I've travelled to in the world. Theres always this fear, suspicion and unease when people see me walking down the street. Some people will tell you that I'm just being paranoid but they're a part of the problem. It's not blatant racism that I experience but it is alot of people fearing me based on me being a black man. That in itself is racist because when you fear someone you want nothing to do with that person. Over 10 years ago I travelled to Hungary with a friend who was Hungarian. We stayed in a small town. We walked around the town most days. I've never felt insecure about being the only black person somewhere but I found it strange that in a majority of tens of thousands of white people, that they could be so uncomfortable when seeing 1 black man. One day we were invited to a party and the mayor of the town was there. Later in the evening my friend told me that the mayor had insulted me in Hungarian as I was standing next to him. He had said "what's this nigger doing here". If you're a black person travelling you need to have a certain mindset. You need mental and emotional strength. It can help being an outgoing person because people let their guard down. Many people see "black" skin colour as inferior. I've had many more positive experiences while travelling but for me the fact that the race issue always seems to be there is so tiring. Its tiring when walking down the street and standing out for the wrong reasons. Its different when I go to predominantly black countries. In Barbados I blended in. I was invisible. No issues. I was like one of the locals. The world is too fearful.
