The Mohican 100 is one of my favorite races. This is the second time I've taken a shot and missed. What could go wrong does go wrong this time around!

Loved seeing another perspective on the race! You were flying those first two loops. Whatâs strange is I was much slower and still DNFâd. I think the cool dry air in the beginning tricked me a bit as it got hotter later. I didnât eat enough AGAIN. Thanks man it was good to see you out there!
Sorry to hear that you DNFed too. Looking forward to watching your video!
@@SeeChadRun yeah it was a rough outing for me. On to the next!!!
I would suggest, for dark time on trail/in the woods to add a small hand carry light in addition to that head worn light.
You have more control over where the illuminated area points. Best if the light has a larger soft flood beam instead of a tight small pencil beam. And light hitting that root from two directions might give you a better chance of seeing it before your foot finds it.
There are 3 things that are so amazing about this. 1 - You frickin ran 78 miles. My goodness that is a crazy accomplishment. 2 - You went out on loop three. You were hurting and you know it wasn't going to go well but you went out, you did it! 3 - (and this is probably the most important) you made a smart decision! None of us can know just how badly you wanted to come across that finish line but you also recognized "hey, this is also just a race" and you made smart decision. Amazing on all accounts:)
The reason I love watching your videos (besides the awesome shooting) is you are the real deal. You show the good and the bad, the finishes as well as the DNFâs. That is what I relate to. Thanks for sharing your videos with us.
Ryan, thanks. Good video and tough to have all that distress. You did a good job of explaining how they negatively reinforced each other, triggering the spiral downward. So tough to see it happening yet not being able to correct it. I hope you've settled a lot of that in your mind since. On the plus side, i LOVED your pre-race stuff...I can so relate, it's my feeling the night before a race...even down to the careful folding of the bib to minimize its surface area, carefully pushing the safety pins through multiple layers in a way it will stay flat on your shorts. Up early, taping your feet, getting set, walking down the quiet, eerie hotel corridor, the drive in the dark to the start line...all the while saying (as you did in the mirror) "Hey, we're gonna do this!!!" Race day never gets old for me and it looks like it never does for you either. Have a monster good time filming at WSER!! What a cool opportunity, enjoy that to the hilt and make some awesome video.
Sorry you didnât get a finish but you were brave in the attempt. Nice to see you a couple times throughout the run and glad you liked the changes we made to the course this year and appreciate the kind words about the race. Hope to see you back in the future.
77+ miles, well done Ryan! Thanks for inspiring me to get back to Mohican. Outstanding footage. Keep up the excellent work, no doubt you put so much effort into this!
Dude I did a hundo this past weekend. Kenton 100 Miler (South Africa). On almost exactly the 50 mile mark it was around mid-day. I was a beast to that point, and then BOOM. The heat of the day caught me. Instantly sleepy, instantly nauseous, instant pace gone. Almost EXACTLY what you describe at 15:40. "Problems arising" was EXACTLY what happened to me. And what sucks, is that it happens to be almost in EVERY miler I do. Lots of dry heaving, lots of puking, plenty dirt naps, I finished it, 5 hours slower than in 2021.
Ryan, all your hard work on running and videos is very inspiring regardless of any race outcome. Iâve never made done a 100, so 77.55 miles is monumental in my eyes.
I really appreciate you sharing the ups and downs with us. I always really enjoy your films! Thanks for sharing!!
Agh, the 70-80mi mental block strikes again. It's a tough stretch during a 100 with having gone so far but with 20+ left to go. Hope you get back out there again.
Wow, 78 miles is still amazing. Really well made video Ryan. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do next. You're fit and due for a good one. đ
Awesome video, love the intermittent pop-ins from the studio too, helpful to have the post-race perspective. Sorry I missed you on the course! Also had a laugh when you mentioned the mental boost you get at the "halfway" point knowing the next 2 loops are shorter. That was the last strain of hope we were hanging onto as things fell apart for us đ. My buddy was really struggling with nausea and I just kept saying "think how great it'll be when we make that turn at firetower and it's only 2 MILES to the next station! Then we dropped at firetower before we even got to enjoy it lol. Well done man!
Thank you for the video! Hope to see you there this coming year
Ryan, very much respect for you. Great job. I think you are smart and incredibly strong.
Love the ITRA shirt from a fellow Hoosier and member!
Drop to 50 mile ultras Ryan and enjoy them...those 100s are just to brutal..just IMHO..
You put in a great effort so congrats with the distance you managed. YouÂŽre an experienced ultra-runner so I guess you`ll be able to dial in on the details for the next big race. ItÂŽs very enjoyable to watch these type of race-videos when we know all the preparation and training youÂŽve done leading up to it. Good luck with the rest of the season. âïžđ
That fenced in area looks much better when it's dry! 2019 was rough with all the rain! I think I might go back next year and tackle the marathon again. Thanks for the video!
Been away for a bit. Great to see you still putting out quality content, Ryan. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Awesome effort, Ryan! Great attitude! 100s are one giant puzzle piece that keeps morphing. Great reason to keep coming back! Keep hammering!
Really enjoyed your honest reflection of the race. âThe good, The bad, The ugly â. Keep on doing the runs and enjoy the process. đđŒđ
still baffles me how runners are able to do 2 or even 3 lloops, a marathon each, and some even manage to complete a fourth loop. asides from the physical hardships, the mental strain must be enormous!
Thank you for another awesome video!!
First time viewer, impressive effort w/ cameraâŠ. thankfully you know your limits and made a good decisionâŠ. My experienceâs with Ultraâs has made me a smarter IM Triathlete, plus with age you tend to slow down and learn to conserve better. West Lafayette is your home town ? Iâm from Elkhart⊠probably shared some dirt or pavement together. Look forward to debriefingâŠ. Knowledge is key to staying alive ⊠đđȘ thanks for sharing
â Still a Big Congratulations to you đđââïžđâ . Looks like the guy in the white tank-top followed you for many miles . Youâll get the next 100 downâŠ..
I hope to one day to get to your level. I am learning a lot from your channel, I just finished my first ultra, a 50K in April.
It was definitely a learning experience, and wake up call, to how I need to train.
You are doing well.. and keep up the great work.
We came as close to meeting as possible. I didn't know you were right behind me at the start or I would've said hi. I'm in the black A-team shirt.
For me, it was deceptively hot. Humidity was 90%-100% in the morning while we camped there. I was burning up all day.
Sounds like you learned alot so that's always a win. Keep facing those miles with a smile.
you still crushed it dude
Yassss!!
Amazing, congratulations đ đ
very pretty place and excellent race. More than 100 km is mind-blowing. Congrats ;)
Another great, honest video Ryan. Just to stand on that start line with 100 miles ahead of you is awesome & also a little insane đ Seriously 100miles, what are we ultra runners like?! Always super inspired by and learn a lot from your videos Ryan, thank you for sharing đđ
Ryan you are still an inspiration to me! I hope you are feeling better. Great video nevertheless.
Still 78 miles is freaking impressive!!đłđȘđââïž
Waiting with anticipation for the video and the wait was worth it. Great story, great quality, thank you for sharing. (Now go get some more sleep!)
Great video Ryan! Sorry to see you drop, but you learn and you grow! My opinion of you hasn't changed one bit ;-)
Really Great Video!Very honest and inspiring! Thanks for taking the time and effort to sharing with Us! How was the watch doing? Is it the 955 from Garmin?
Sorry things didn't go your way this time, Ryan! A great learning experience all the same and I'm sure you'll only be stronger for it.
Onwards and Upwards!
Tough luck. These things are just crazy challenges. Did you ever do a video about your current Fenix 7 watch screen set up for this race?
Bummed that Mohican didn't go well! You still, giving all the issues you mentioned, did great. That was pretty cool that you got a shout out in that first lap! Hope you can get the stomach issues worked out...I know it's easier said than done
Great recap Ryan, thanks for sharing it with us.
You mention the Maurten products, but what were you taking in for electrolytes? I love Maurten but for ultras I need to supplement with electrolyte tabs, skratch, etc. Without the electrolytes your gut can completely shut down
Yeah, this is Maurten's only weakness (I use Maurten at every race now). You've gotta supplement it with something
Hey Ryan, thank you for another great video. I am planning to do the Mohican Marathon in 2023. Obviously that's not the same as the 100, but I was wondering if you had an advice or wisdom to consider regarding the course.
Awesome video, Ryan! Sorry it didn't work out like you hoped but judging by your immediate journaling afterwards, you're going to learn a lot from the "failure". Curious what your salt and electrolyte strategy is, because like me, your shirts and face always look like a salt cave when you're sweating a lot. You may need to add Salt Stick capsules or chews to your Maurten mix.
I'm sorry, Ryan. So close! I admire your positive attitude, though.
Coffee is nauseating,I would ditch it. If you like a caffine beverage there is tea,Coke,Pepsi etc. The recently passed Tom Osler praised sweetened iced tea. Usually if you have committed to walking for a while you can start assimilating nourishment provided you aren't dehydrated and walking also allows you lots of water drinking, perhaps even more than a quart at a time.
I am not familiar with the runners' drinks and foods around today,a shame that Exceed and Powerbar are either altered from what worked or no longer made. I have found that Gatorade is not suitable for drinking large amounts of in long distance events. (Nausea and makes it hard to drink water even though thirsty/dehydrated)
There was one running event where I had such trouble but so did several other runners, I think that the spaghetti that someone brought to the runners' campment the preceding evening before the race (O.D.) had something wrong with it.
So the bib was just to show your number and the anklet had the chip... is that right? If so... uh... why?
