Bully in the Alley Yarmouth Shantymen / Pressgang Mutiny / Halifax

  • It was a hot July night in Halifax, Nova Scotia which is not common. The Yarmouth Shantymen were singing a gig at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in the dockside court, not common. Pressgang Mutiny, who are jazz players were in town for the Halifax Jazz Festival, not common. They chanced on the older group of East Coast men and when the Yarmouth guys found out they sang sea shantys too, well, it turned into one crazy-good folk-singing moment. With apologies to Stan Rogers' Barrett's Privateers, " We were singing men on a Halifax pier, shantymen, all, of great good cheer." The song, the singers and the audience........Here's the bootleg evidence. Play it loudly.

stuart griffith Right, I love this shanty. The version I'm most familiar with has a slower and more even tempo. More in line with a work song. I still enjoyed this version a lot though.

      I beg to differ.
Slow, low and powerful is probably best for this song because of they rhythm of the words. It’s like playing a slow snare cadence. Sure some might sound great fast and weaker, but most don’t.

Thank you cottonbloom. I checked out your work. VIDEO: Cottonbloom original- We Know (the non-lyrical version!) I liked the sonic journey on this one. The single graphic was provocative and carried that minimal action- my head stayed in the sound- the image blanking the visual for imaginative relating to your intentions. Sometimes a video is a toss up between visuals and sound. Both have to have something. I think I hope the audio is the strongest and posting live performances is my back up plan. David

Well, I make documentary type song videos and feel my way around the medium building up some skills. The world seems to live on "jump-cut " videos and high speed attention span. I like to be able to follow the "build" in a performance so I have long shots. You have long shots and build when your video calls for it...ssssooo I liked that. But the music was that whole other dimension so the parts are bigger than the whole.

Notice how at 00:39, one of the members of Pressgang Mutiny starts singing accidentally. The fact that you gents sung such a great rendition of the song upon your first meeting (with only a few minor slip-ups ;D) speaks to everyone's familiarity with the song and their musical acumen.
    Great song.

      @YarmouthShantymen1  Před 7 lety +15

Hi S Clever. Good ear. I too notice on stage events ( Keith Richards signalling to end a song ) and heard that vocal entrance as we sang. I was surprised by the musicianship of Pressgang's Christopher Weatherstone that he picked up that we had our own reading of Bully and didn't repeat 00:39. You are right they sang with power right out of the blocks and that performance was magic. I was sure glad the camera was running. Not 4 months later Pressgang Mutiny came to Yarmouth during an East Coast Pressgang Mutiny tour ( they camped out at our homes to save expenses ) and they lead Bully this time and Yarmouth Shantymen had to be careful of how they performed the song. Thanks you for commenting. David Mahoney

So help me Bob I’m bully in the alley.
Way, (way!) hey, (hey!) bully in the alley.
Help me Bob I’m bully in the alley.
    Bully down in Shinbone Al.
Sally is a girl that I loved dearly,
Way, hey, bully in the alley
Sally is a girl that I spliced nearly,
    Bully down in Shinbone Al
For seven long years I courted Sally,
    All she did was dilly-dally,
    Chorus:
I bought her silk I bought her laces
I took her out to all the places
    Chorus:
I’ll leave home and I’ll become a sailor,
I’ll leave home and ship aboard a whaler.
    Chorus:
I’ll come back and I’ll marry Sally,
We’ll have kids and count them by the tally.

What more does he have to do for you to notice him?
Now I have to go down to Shipbone again and collect my depressed and drunken friend passed out on the alley.

Thanks Timothy. Notice the guy in the back row with the gray vest. This would not have happened without his stage presence. Just as the clip begins you'll see him gesturing to the guy in the red vest. When I sang a shanty I asked the guys if they were in a band and we said we'd ask them up but then we forgot. Wayne remembered and alerted us. That single gesture turned us into fans of Pressgang Mutiny who now have their first CD out.www.pressgangmutiny.com/ yarmouthshantymen.org/index.htm

We never met the guys before, but when asked from the stage, when we saw them singing along, they said they sang shanties and knew our closing number to come up they said "Sure". I always film our shows so the magic was there on video. You'll see I used 2 cameras. Wide and closer frame on lead singer. David

Hi Camarilla, You are absolutely right. I did all the media work and it was early in my use of 2 cameras and using a centrally located ZOOM digital audio recorders. This audio is from each camera and very LIVE but it was two different distances. Now I live record audio with a ZOOM H6n just forward of center to get live but reduced recording of the amplification of the voices in the track. That single audio track allows me to use lots of video clips and not make the sound bounce. However as I write, this video is our best at over 36,000 views and if I repost a fixed video the numbers will go back to zero. Thanks David
