Bully in the Alley Yarmouth Shantymen / Pressgang Mutiny / Halifax

- It was a hot July night in Halifax, Nova Scotia which is not common. The Yarmouth Shantymen were singing a gig at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in the dockside court, not common. Pressgang Mutiny, who are jazz players were in town for the Halifax Jazz Festival, not common. They chanced on the older group of East Coast men and when the Yarmouth guys found out they sang sea shantys too, well, it turned into one crazy-good folk-singing moment. With apologies to Stan Rogers' Barrett's Privateers, " We were singing men on a Halifax pier, shantymen, all, of great good cheer." The song, the singers and the audience........Here's the bootleg evidence. Play it loudly.
Damn, Sally IS a really prominent figure in these songs.
Yeah, so is Molly. Those gal's gotta round man.
I'm pretty sure the guy in black leather is Edward kenway the terror of the carribean sea
Mr TeaTime BlackBeard
yeah
Damn yea turns out he reincarnated
Can't beat John Bromley...he does an incredible version of Bully
Albany shantymen did way better. It made my hair stand up

Britain never left America
It's too bloody fast. if you worked this quick you'd kill off the whole gang.
stuart griffith Right, I love this shanty. The version I'm most familiar with has a slower and more even tempo. More in line with a work song. I still enjoyed this version a lot though.

I beg to differ.
Slow, low and powerful is probably best for this song because of they rhythm of the words. It’s like playing a slow snare cadence. Sure some might sound great fast and weaker, but most don’t.
@Chas No I think he means since they used to sing these to keep a pace at work. But I agree since its modern I like the sped up version
its ned flanders
Nice lively rendition. They keep their rhythm going really well. ^____^
One of my favorite shanties... :D Thanks for posting this!
Thank you cottonbloom. I checked out your work. VIDEO: Cottonbloom original- We Know (the non-lyrical version!) I liked the sonic journey on this one. The single graphic was provocative and carried that minimal action- my head stayed in the sound- the image blanking the visual for imaginative relating to your intentions. Sometimes a video is a toss up between visuals and sound. Both have to have something. I think I hope the audio is the strongest and posting live performances is my back up plan. David
Thank you so much!! Have to say this comment made my day.
Well, I make documentary type song videos and feel my way around the medium building up some skills. The world seems to live on "jump-cut " videos and high speed attention span. I like to be able to follow the "build" in a performance so I have long shots. You have long shots and build when your video calls for it...ssssooo I liked that. But the music was that whole other dimension so the parts are bigger than the whole.
Notice how at 00:39, one of the members of Pressgang Mutiny starts singing accidentally. The fact that you gents sung such a great rendition of the song upon your first meeting (with only a few minor slip-ups ;D) speaks to everyone's familiarity with the song and their musical acumen.
Great song.
Hi S Clever. Good ear. I too notice on stage events ( Keith Richards signalling to end a song ) and heard that vocal entrance as we sang. I was surprised by the musicianship of Pressgang's Christopher Weatherstone that he picked up that we had our own reading of Bully and didn't repeat 00:39. You are right they sang with power right out of the blocks and that performance was magic. I was sure glad the camera was running. Not 4 months later Pressgang Mutiny came to Yarmouth during an East Coast Pressgang Mutiny tour ( they camped out at our homes to save expenses ) and they lead Bully this time and Yarmouth Shantymen had to be careful of how they performed the song. Thanks you for commenting. David Mahoney
Regards from England mate. Good job

I'm sorry to keep blowing up your spot David but this is absolutely brilliant, great rendition.
We love it, man. Thanks a lot Timothy. This was a magic moment on the Halifax, Nova Scotia waterfront. David
I swear that blonde guy with the sunglasses looks like Jason Moama
Dudes rock!
So help me Bob I’m bully in the alley.
Way, (way!) hey, (hey!) bully in the alley.
Help me Bob I’m bully in the alley.
Bully down in Shinbone Al.
Sally is a girl that I loved dearly,
Way, hey, bully in the alley
Sally is a girl that I spliced nearly,
Bully down in Shinbone Al
For seven long years I courted Sally,
All she did was dilly-dally,
Chorus:
I bought her silk I bought her laces
I took her out to all the places
Chorus:
I’ll leave home and I’ll become a sailor,
I’ll leave home and ship aboard a whaler.
Chorus:
I’ll come back and I’ll marry Sally,
We’ll have kids and count them by the tally.
Lol!!! Much love sent to you from Mount Vernon Georgia!!!
Wtf... I'm in Mount Vernon Washington, I didn't know there was one in Georgia!?
Thanks, man.
Help me, Rhonda! Help me Bob! Somebody!!!
Yarmouth Shantymen would help if we lived in Georgia. THANKS for the comments Jessica. David
@@YarmouthShantymen1 thank you!
Lol! Yes siree! Help me Bob!
Loved it
that was realy good
Hey its Bob, come on Sally, its been 7 years and my friend has been trying to marry you, he's taken you to all the fancy places bought you all that fancy clothes and dresses, he's even gotten himself a job!!!
What more does he have to do for you to notice him?
Now I have to go down to Shipbone again and collect my depressed and drunken friend passed out on the alley.
Come on Sally, he's a good guy and will give you 12 children.
Give my friend a chance.
What the actual fuck are you drunk?
@@therealcbumstead Can I ask you something?
Do you think im sitting drunk, writing to a girl called Sally or do you think its a joke about the lyrics to song from the perspective of Bob?
@@Belisarius536 Uh actually my comment was a joke too and I do indeed get it
@@therealcbumstead What, that was a joke? Yeah of course it was.
I still don't get it.
Can you explain it to me then, and how it applies to my joke because "what the actual fuck are you drunk" doesn't really play off mine or have a pun, does it?
What was there to "get"?
In not getting at you or anything, honestly I just don't get your joke.
You sure your not bully in the alley and went home with greasy Annie instead of dear Sally?
@@Belisarius536 An ironical question to point out that your comment was hilarious and only a drunk person would come up with something like that, i didn't mean to be rude in some way. Stay safe buddy!
Ned Flanders, is that you?
0.75 speed, Thank me later.
.85 would work so much better
sounds all robotic so thanks but no thanks idiot
Protection would be nice!!!
Question is there like positions of leadership for this group? I notice most of the guys are wearing black and lead is beige and guy to left is wearing a red vest
Dude with the man bun at 0:38 forgot he was not leading
One of our favourite women for sure and so is Nancy. Da id
What exactly does bully in the alley mean from my understanding it was like saying you're stuck in a pinch or in a pickle like the old saying well bully for me in reference to getting a crappy situation am I correct
This is a brilliant rendition. LAST TIME NOW!
Thanks Timothy. Notice the guy in the back row with the gray vest. This would not have happened without his stage presence. Just as the clip begins you'll see him gesturing to the guy in the red vest. When I sang a shanty I asked the guys if they were in a band and we said we'd ask them up but then we forgot. Wayne remembered and alerted us. That single gesture turned us into fans of Pressgang Mutiny who now have their first CD out.www.pressgangmutiny.com/ yarmouthshantymen.org/index.htm
a fine display of cross cultural pollination. we should all learn all of the songs.
..cool..
Thanks Nicolas. Yarmouth Shantymen and Pressgang Mutiny. Totally spontaneous performance. We never met the guys before, but when asked from the stage, when we saw them singing along, they said they sang shanties and knew our closing number to come up they said "Sure". I always film our shows so the magic was there on video. You'll see I used 2 cameras. Wide and closer frame on lead singer. David
What happened to "Greasy Annie"
LOOOL I was about to ask the same
Wicked!
Good, but you gotta slow it down. You're on a voyage that takes months, what's the rush?
So many vests...
What's the rush?! 10 for enthusiasm but gosh it's a bit fast
Chad angloids be like
Daniel Blythe yo based?
Hess very based
based
Now all I need to find the lyrics
beatboxin' the crap out of 1.5 speed
And when he says help me bob wasn't that like meaning asking God for help or something
This is... a significantly cleaner version of the singers doings with Sally.
does anyone hear the differance of the song when they switch the position of the camera its not really good to have that in a video does it :P
Hi Camarilla, You are absolutely right. I did all the media work and it was early in my use of 2 cameras and using a centrally located ZOOM digital audio recorders. This audio is from each camera and very LIVE but it was two different distances. Now I live record audio with a ZOOM H6n just forward of center to get live but reduced recording of the amplification of the voices in the track. That single audio track allows me to use lots of video clips and not make the sound bounce. However as I write, this video is our best at over 36,000 views and if I repost a fixed video the numbers will go back to zero. Thanks David
anytime man i love the song thou wish i could sing it with a big group but i suck at singing without background sounds lol
Somebody get John Bromley on the phone...
