- Are simple pedals better? Since the dawn of time, we have been trying to figure out whether more features on a pedal equals more value. It sounds like a simple solution. If bigger is better, then by the same logic more features must make a better guitar pedal, right?
...Not necessarily.
In this week's episode, I want to share some of my favorite pedals that get the job done with no fuss. They always sound good, they don't leave you hanging, and you don’t need an instruction manual the size of War and Peace to figure them out. It’s a win-win.

My brother bought a Timeline and it sounds great but I am just intimidated by the thought that I'm not getting enough tone from it. I'd rather just trust that it sounds good than worry about all the perceived loss of tone
The new Strymon Nightsky is well beyond just a another reverb pedal. It's a synthverb, and I've never seen that before! Very cool.
Yeah I want it but I use reverb in a utilitarian fashion I don’t have reverb on my amp. It would be too much of an insane reverb option.

I love that they are givin' a spotlight to the Julia Chorus, which is almost a direct competitor to the JHS Emperor. That is so down to earth, love it! And btw, I own the Emperor, it is a KILLER pedal, go and buy it now everyone :)

Tim Chalmers either green screen or just splitting the frame... I’ve got a few videos on my channel doing it myself. You just play along to whichever side you record first and leave the camera in the same spot, then edit them together... if you’re using a lot of mics and wanting a good mix and also doing multiple angles/cuts and takes, it can be a nightmare of a workflow between DAW and video editing tho
The level of quality you guys deliver week in week out is astonishing. The jams are insane. The content always entertaining. And having Nick as a backup for Johs is like having Tom Hanks as an understudy for DeNiro.
As much as I love Josh, this is fast becoming my favourite video - more Nick, please!
I'm also a massive sucker for great video editing (another big reason why this channel is the greatest).
The moment the first jam starts and I realise there are 2 Nicks.

Tbh Julia is a pretty complicated pedal as far as choruses go. CE-2 would be more fitting

The JHS Tidewater is one of few ways to get an affordable sine wave trem. Most trems are squares or triangles. If sine's offered, it's usually one feature on an expensive multi-feature trem. The Tidewater is an amazing pedal and the price is more than fair.

@@Scrammy103 the Julia is a great pedal. Out of the 8 chorus pedals I own, it's definitely my favorite one, but out of those it is also the most elaborate.

I’m finding even my new delay/reverb pedals are pretty simple. Thank God! There are way more complicated versions, but that would be way ahead if my skill set. At this point, I’m super grateful for simple.

I bet if you just plugged straight into that cool little 40 watt Milkman and cranked it up to seven and rolled back a little on the guitar volume and tone...you wouldn't need even simple pedals.

Love this video, thank you Nick! I used to be a bigger pedal head but the immense amount of features on more complex pedals, plus the jock-ish culture of it all made me a tuner, mini tubescreamer and boss DD-20 kind of person. Starting to get back into pedals (looking at some jhs ones rn, the bonsai sounds so cool!), but more and more I'm finding the less options you have, the more creative you can get. The limitation can be really fun and get you to push your current pedals for more sounds!

Playing, then the same company as that (old blood noise endeavors) also had the best shit to come into a little sub type of yt genre with the channel Knobs coming out in the early to mid 2010s playing pedals indepth and a unique video style that many do now similar that's nice to just listen with no talking but captions to read the info about the pedals and great playing that's not stuck in only metal/90s rock classic rock/commercial grunge and stuff but isn't only shoegaze and dreampop sounds too with math and other genres used to not be bored and always become inspired to play something new after watching any video .
The lesser known channels are gonna take me a sec to look up for you.

In the videos with new ones made like every month, he has a more black metal and dark vibe for most of the pedals and a ton of unique distortion and fuzz mixing stuff that's great and similar to caitlenbreads one cat fuzz pedal I had back in the day but forgot its name,, but anyways I'll stop going on any longer as I have gone further than really wven necessary lol. Well done Nick! Are all of these really "simple" pedals? What is "simple"? I think simple should mean one effect, one on/off switch, and three knobs or less. Is Chorus/Tremolo one effect or two? I can see the argument that it's one effect across a continuum, but that's pushing for math instead of art; it's two separate effects. The Bonsai? Definitely more than a one effect. And both have more than three knobs, so there's that. Just saying.

I prefer not just simple pedals but also simple guitars and simple amps. I find that the fewer knobs there are, the easier it is to get a good tone.

MXR Phase 90 - the most simple pedal I’ve ever owned and yet have used it for decades! One knob to turn with your foot and it does so much! From Van Halen to Frampton to Zeppelin to Nirvana..,it does it all!
Hey Josh I hope you see this comment and is why I popped in a recent demo I just received my 3 Series fuzz and it is fantastic I've tried several fuzz's Fulltone...Keely...Kingtone just to name a few but this one is perfect for me The others weren't bad but I feel I had a different need than the full out fuzz tone I actually use it as more of an overdrive and it pushes my Rangemaster clone perfect No noise Great sustain when combined Yes simple circuit and perfect for me And the full out fuzz is there if needed Thank you sir I thought I would never find MY fuzz Happy Holidays to the guys and gals at JHS
