- WHAT is NIGHT BLINDNESS? | Optometrist Explains
Night blindness is a concern many people have in the clinic, today we cover different aspects that can worsen vision in the dark.
It can also mimic night myopia and vitamin A deficiency
This is not true blindness as total blindness is when there is no light perception

Im night blind. My pupils are naturally wide so it lets in too much light which makes things look brighter during the day and darker at night. It gets painful during the day sometimes
This is exactly how it is for me. My eyes let in too much light in the day. Occasionally I get headaches from it.
@@simpatico4004 yeah light gives me migraines sometimes and i have to cover my eyes or go lay down in a dark room. There have been times people thought i was mad bc my eyes are squinting all the time from how bright everything is. I hate it sometimes
SAME. Even with glasses on its so hard to see
I personally search for hours and hours to find a understanding and entertaining video but all the videos are about tests and exams which i find very annoying. So thank you sooo much man i look forward for more videos
Honest question that sounds like a joke:
How can one tell the difference between night blindness, and nearly every car now has LED ultra mega bright headlights blindness?
@AntoniotheOptometrist this is also caused by refractive surgery like LASIK thanks to the small, permanent optical zone it creates in your cornea. Would love to see a video on that and the other problems with these surgeries. Except halos don't just appear around things that emit lights like streetlights, they appear around *any* bright colored object/character/UI elements/text against dark backgrounds in low light.
For me I can see OK at night when there is limited lighting. However, when driving, car lights really mess up my vision... I believe more than the average person. Not sure what the cause of that is, or what to do about it. I am slightly nearsighted, but eye examines have not found any astigmatisms.
Same to me, I feel like my night vision is even a little better than average, but I suffer a little more from bright light and bright sun
I have a long commute (over an hour) and I have noticed that my night blindness gets worse the longer I drive. Some nights are worse than others. I used to think it was just dependent on if my eyes were dry or not, and how tired I was driving home, but now I'm wondering if any of it may have to do with the moon cycle. In theory if its a clear night with a full moon, there should be more natural light at night and so your pupil will not expand as much, so maybe you will have better vision?
Oh my Lord, I've been wondering all my life, why lights in the dark have halos. This was eye-opening! (heh)
I thought it would be interesting to add to this with my eye condition. What i have creates night blindness to the point im not allowed to drive at night anymore, its so newly discovered it doesnt even jave a name yet besides what its described as how it looks, and it gives me the same symptoms as macular degeneration and macular pucker without actually having either. I have a misshapen macula and it got so bad recently i got my ADA to not drive at night anymore as all i saw was black everywhere unless i had extreme amounts of light where it represented day time. Im being experimented on by my eye dr and the NIH (USA) to see what changes this or at least my symptoms. Macuhealth has actually gotten me from 20/60 to 20/25 in a few months. Macula is still rectangular but i can see drastically better during the day and almost 100% at night again.
Thank you! As someone who always experience difficulty in seeing clearly at night, I have recently got a pair of Zeiss SmartLife Digital lenses and the night vision is significantly improved! I can feel the contrast is so much better as the lenses were designed according to the pupil size of my age group. Nowadays well designed lenses can really help our night vision !!
I will look up the digital lenses! Thank you
Hello, I have a problem, I can't see well at night, I'm interested in what kind of lenses we're talking about, I'm from the Balkans and here we don't have much progress in that direction, which lenses help for better night vision, thanks

Dude I'm 16,this wasn't an issue for me 2 years ago its sometimes hard to see jackshit in the dark is there a way to cure this.
i have visual snow syndrome, and cant see shit at night without a flashlight

I always struggle with my phone because the brightness hurts my eyes and triggers migraines easily, but if it’s too low I can’t read well, but if I keep the brightness low and increase the contrast, the white hurts my eyes bad. 🤦🏾 So yeah, that’s why I listen to audiobooks and why I just guess what’s happening to characters in the dark as I read subtitles on a foreign horror Netflix show. 😅 and if I’m on CZcams comments or email, I suppose I’m just making my vision worse but I just haven’t found a solution.
I am suffering from Nyctalopia since I was 6, we are 5 in the family suffering same issues which is hard to see at night. Now I am turning 30 it is getting dimmer and dimmer as days passes by what can you advice? Is there any eyeglasses you can recommend? Thank you
I have problem when I seat where there is bright light my vision goes dim slowly
Perhaps it’s the iris sphincter contracting, limiting the amount of light coming in?
Why these happen?
Informative video
My eyes take a long time to adjust to limited light but it’s something I’ve had to live with. But now at night I see double stars (when there’s only one there). Is this a processing problem?
No maybe anxiety eye stress or 1 eye is not focusing
If I turn off the lights just before sleep in my bed room so it's dark,my left eye has like a smokey or foggy curtain veil blocking the centre of my vision for a min untill my eye has adjusted to the dark its weird and worrying :(
I have the same issue and now it’s perm like this . I am going to the dr to find out why. I have a feeling it’s a cateract.
@@SirenASMR_ mine went away after a year but now I have double vision
I am struggling with this and also static in my vision. Doctors haven’t been able to help me. I’m afraid and would love some inspiration on how to fix this. I’m a bit low on Vitamin A which is a test I paid for to try to help me figure out some more. Please let me know your thoughts! Thank you so much!
you might want to look at visual snow syndrome
The static is called visual snow syndrome
Take cod liver oil it’s vitamin a . I am taking it daily now . They make it in pill form by the brand pure
I struggle to read menu's and the like in bars and dimply lit restaurant's, even when wearing my glasses, when all my friends have no issues (even those with glasses). When I switch on the torch on my phone, bingo, it's nice and clear (and all my friends laugh at me :) ). Is this a sign of night blindness?
Yes
May or May not. Better check with the doctor
Please do a video about visual snow syndrome!
I unfortunately work nights so it’s nerve racking driving to and from work… 😅
