60007 'SIR NIGEL GRESLEY' on the ENGLISH RIVIERA EXPRESS! Plus CLASS 47s & LOCO SWAP at 40 STEPS!

A loco swap for the Locomotive Services Group/ Saphos Trains ‘English Riviera Express’ tours to Paignton and Kingswear this month, saw A4 Pacific 60007 ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ head down to stable at Westridge on the West Somerset Railway, relieving B1 61306 ‘Mayflower’ which has covered the bulk of South West LSL steam charters so far this year.
On a blustery Saturday morning, we firstly we see the Eastern interloper, 60007 ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ raising steam at the West Somerset Railway and coming off shed this morning at Bishops Lydeard before utilising the Norton Fitzwarren connection and heading for the mainline.
After, we headed to 40 steps bridge in Taunton to see the railtour arriving. Class 47 47810 ‘Crewe Diesel Depot’ initially detached and headed to Taunton East Yard, but due to it being busy with parked Colas Tampers, the 47 was instructed to restart and move to the rarely used bay platform 1 in Taunton, to allow access to the Tampers.
We then catch up with the A4 at 40 steps and see the loco swap between the pacific, and Class 47 47810 ‘Crewe Diesel Depot’ before 60007 ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ heads off with the 1Z60 ‘English Riviera Express’ to Kingswear. 47593 ‘Galloway Princess’ was on the rear. | 06.07.2024
