- Full UP 4014 coverage from Yuma, Arizona to Steins, New Mexico. As Union Pacific's "Big Boy" 4014 continues on its " Great Race Across the Southwest," I took full opportunity of experiencing the journey across the Arizona landscape this past week. Thousands of people in total showed up from all corners of the state and country to see the Big Boy in action along the Gila and Lordsburg Subdivisions of the UP Sunset Route. It sure was an intense chase, that's for sure!
Starting off in Yuma, Arizona early on the morning of Wednesday October 16th, the 4014 started the multi-day journey across Southern Arizona. I first caught it just outside of Yuma, in the Dome Valley, and followed the 4014 till about Shawmut, located just outside of Maricopa.
The next opportunity I had to see 4014 was on Saturday October 19th, as it finished its Arizona adventure. 4014 left Tucson about 45 minutes late this particular morning, but still provided quite a show to the crowds lined up trackside in Downtown Tucson. I followed the 4014 on this particular day to Steins, New Mexico, just next to the AZ/NM border.
It sure was awesome seeing so many people out for this steam engine, see you down the line 4014!
Thanks for watching!

I am just mesmerized by 6:45 - 7:00. Not only did that behemoth barely have to articulate at all to navigate that curve, but the Big Boy is also so powerful that it sounds almost exactly like a jet engine as it passes by. What an amazing work of engineering.
4014 is an absolute Rock Star wherever she goes!
Agreed she is my favorite American steam locomotive
4014 is a boy wtf is wrong with you all
@@Runboyrun05 you've been drinking too much 'PC' koolaid!
Absolutely wonderful! I live in the great state of Arizona and though I was unable to see her in person, this is just as good! Marvelous machinery! and that whistle....!!!! Gives me the shivers.
Thanks so much! Great job, Sir.
I’m from the UK but I still think big boy is one of the coolest locomotives going
Danny Fenton yeah I think it’s the coolest operational one. My favorite is the Allegheny Type locomotives, but none work and there are two left I think.
The flying Scotsman is superior to this bignboy
@@electrohalo8798 flying scotsman pulls 500 ton, the big boy pulls 3600 tons over the mountains.... so how is the scotsman superior???
hill billy Scotsman is faster and can go round smaller corners and is more of a legend than big boy
ELECTRO HALO8 it’s a different engine... Scotsman was made for pulling people fast.... the big boy was made for pulling loads over the mountains..
Put 3600 tons behind the Scotsman see if it can pull it
The C5A Galaxy of it’s day.
Yes, it is !
Its great seeing Big Boy but...
give it some freight to pull like it was built for! preferably some double stacks to demonstrate its power :)
Ed really does have the best train set in the world to play with.
What a big, beautiful beast he is!!!!!! So glad that one of these monsters of steam is back on the roads!!!!
That steam whistle is SO MUCH MORE PLEASING than a diesel's air horn. Geeze, I love steam locomotives. Progress sucks.
Very nice video with the Big Boy 4014 and the geologic landscapes of Arizona in the background, adding in my case as a Dutch/Australian traveller to the US in the 80's, to the overall appreciation of all the Big Boy videos that the many various train buffs have put on CZcams for the benefit of people who could not make it in person to witness this awesome event. Cheers from the Train Lord in South Australia
What a beautiful creature!!!!. Greetings from Spain!.

EXCELLENT video re: camera locations, sunlight, backgrounds (mountains, rivers, etc.) Most enjoyable.
Thanks for your fine efforts. We folks in the east can only see it through your eyes.
Indeed..Too bad, it did not roll across, and up and down the coast..guess tour was limited..
Great oppurtunity to see Arizona as it is away from the interstate ❤️. As a former gear-jammer, I always wondered what it looked like over the hills you see along the Highway. Thank You
Excellent filming!
The legend lives!
This is awesome. Probably one of the best 4014 videos out there.
Very nice camera work and editing! Thanks for sharing!
Well done!!! Thank you for capturing such a rare sight!
Thanks for taking the time to hunt Bigboy down, and make great footage in the process. Thanks for the effort. Greetings from the Netherlands!
All hail to the 4014 big boy steam engine that's making history of prewar era steam locomotive to be back in steam time to save big boys!
I saw that manifest leaving Tucson twice. Once south of Tucson just before Big Boy came then once just after big boy left Benson. Nice video!
Excellent vedio
I’m glad that I saw 4014 in Topeka, KS back in November of 2019.
Still 4014 lives as incredible
Yeah just a shame that they won't use the 844 for a double header anymore.
@@FQP-7024 Here's your doubleheader: czcams.com/video/NuJPVhtQFeQ/video.html
I seen Big Boy 4014 in action in Wellton,AZ when I was on my way home to the San Diego area for a few days visit. I’m glad that I did get to see Big Boy 4014 in action. I have seen Bog Boy 4014’s brothers 4005 in a Denver freight yard on May 24,1973 & 4012 on display at Steamtown in Scranton, PA on September 24,2012. I missed seeing the Flying Scotsman 50 years ago when it passed through Newark, DE on its way to Washington,DC.
Thanks for uploadong. What a great adventure for you and a great memory for all of us whobwere able to see it in person.
The UP 4014 is the Greatest Market tool they could possibly have for public relations. As good as the Blimp.
Absolutely no question.
But too bad UP has made some wrong moves, taking them off *my* list of RR's I support. 1) was their decision to stop helping US border enforcement (ICE) (Then I heard about how their trains were getting hugely ripped off, in parts of LA. Karma...?) Then, in '22, came their decision to utterly screw over fertilizer producer CF Industries. Without any notice, CF was told to reduce their railcars on UP, heavily delaying shipments of fertilizer to farmers.
This would be the moment to recall the old saying from many years ago: "what a way to run a railroad!"
Excellent video. one of the better videos of the "Big Boy" that I've seen.
Great train shots. Thank you for taking us along.
Great vid! Especially at Shawmut Loop & Cienega!! Thx!
Saw it in Houston and Old Town Spring today, it’s awesome
Bravo, Michael! This is certainly right at the very top of Big Boy recordings, with so many superb locations. I also spent time chasing it around SoCal, then to Tucson and finally Benson. Do you recall the Amtrak Sunset Limited which left Benson just ahead of 4014's arrival? He blew a turbo on the climb east of Benson, with a terrific belching of thick black smoke and tall orange flames shooting upward. Absolutely spectacular! That train came to a stop at the intersection of Sybil Rd and remained for quite awhile before limping away at slow speed. That bit of drama is what delayed Big Boy in Benson. I have not seen action footage from on the hill but folks were recording it, and it would be good stuff- guaranteed!
Wow! unaware of this - thanks for the share :)
AWESOME!!!!! Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work.
When I first heard 4014 "tuning up" her whistle after the Long Sleep, it gave me goosebumps. Hearing it here did it to me again. Hauntingly beautiful.
Great video, thanks for sharing !
Thank you for the chase. Great video.
Great video! Stunning captures! Welle done! Thumbs Up
Greetings from Romania
Andrew
Brilliant. Love the moan of the Big Boy's whistle.👍🚂🚂🚂👍
Excellent, nice to see this giant of engeneering back on the rails.
Well done 🤓🏍️
When I was a kid, I saw 4014 at the Fairground in Pomona. It's incredible to imagine it being alive again after so long.
UP4014 came though Northeast Oklahoma yesterday, had a chance to see it up close and personnel. very awesome sight to behold!
That was super great, nice video
Excellent footage! I'm still amazed they were able to squeeze 4014 onto the Sunset Route since that line is filled to capacity, I believe.
Great video...the Shawmut and Cienega shots were the best!
I realize it is quite randomly asking but does anyone know a good place to stream new tv shows online ?
@Zion Chad Flixportal :D
@Drew Sam thank you, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) I really appreciate it!
@Zion Chad glad I could help xD
Great video. thanks. I couldn't see it this well had I been there with my cameras and video recorder.
Beautiful train
GREAT BEAUTIFUL VIDEO THIS IS MY FAVORITE SO FAR THANK YOU SO MÛCH FOR MAKING THESE. VIDEOS AND SHARING THEM WITH US
Awesome video. So glad I was able to see it in Eloy, AZ
Very nice, yellow trains👍👍👍👍
Superb Video..
Sweet video
11:32 That seems like its a tight place for the big boy
What a guy.
I should say. A really really great shot.
I was at a bunch of these same spots with you! Especially the one at Steins, I have a near identical shot but I think I was standing a little further back and up the hill
I wonder how steamed that person got at 11:50...they were right on the tracks and was blasted with the exhaust.
Great that the 4014 is still going and going. Humm...wonder where the 844 is right now. 🤔
Nice shots here ! We caught it outside of El Paso, Valentine TX, & Marfa TX ... Such a tremendous sight, and History as well! My Father got to ride one, back when they were new, during WWII ..
He always spoke of it being such a good thing during the War.. All the people that got to see this marvelous in action, are Blessed with having seen a wonderful piece of History.. It will now make
way back home, to Cheyenne...Put up to the Museum...I hope to catch it one more time, as it gets to Van Buren, Arkansas, and Sallisaw, Oklahoma..Thanx for sharing this Video ! * Wow ! Where is that "Moving Water" at 5:45 ?
@ 10:46 I see Ed's arm waving from the cab, like he's warning people to STEP BACK!
Hi ,Very good,great filming ..Dave
Geez watching all these people crawl over active tracks like ants makes me nervous.
right? i mean, some of these people are morons.

exchangeable deploreables
When they get a blast of that air horn they'll get religion, and move. 😯.
I Myself was chasing this beast too.
I just stood 15 feet away from the up big boy running at about 40mph and it was fucking amazing
Did you get Steam roll? Hehe.
Felt the steam?
Maybe Union Pacific 4014 should visit the Grand Canyon like Santa Fe 3751 did! We will call it the Great Race to the Grand Canyon!
GREAT job on following the 4014 !! I was sent a few pics of this when it arrived in Wilcox (Wine Festival) last Sat 10-19-19. This is 600 tons (1,200.000 pounds) of pure history! If anyone is wondering what people are doing by the tracks after it passed in the Tucson vid - picking up coins for it to flatten. DavidLovesTrains....too(lol)
Love this love steam trains who needs diesel trains bring back all steam trains i think me an my dad came to Marshall Texas from Louisiana to see big boy 4014 so awesome trip
Very well done video.
You did a great job! I followed Big Boy from Tucson to Bowie. You must have exceeded the speed limit on I-10 to get there early enough each time to set up the tripod and camera!
Diesels are a part of UP Steam Locomotives tours as a backup/brakes because the infrastructure that provided water/coal/fuel no longer exist and the 4014 is being chased by semi truck tankers often carry each. Indeed its using used motor oil as its fuel and the other Big Boy that used oil for awhile was the 4005 that belongs to the Forney Museum in Denver and which switched back to coal because oil was more costly as prices went up during the experiment.
I think out of all the BigBoy videos on YT, this one is the best. Cienega Creek was the cats meow......You did a great job!
And to the Morons @ 10:42 that refuse to keep their distance to the point that Ed has to wave his arms for you to get back, realize YOU'RE part of the problem.
Man, I would kill to see an HO scale train set of this. I'd blow $1,500 dollars on it easily; for the two locomotives (but maybe make the DASH-9 a dummy to save money), the two auxiliary water tenders, the 10x passenger cars, and a big enough oval of track to run it all on, it would be so worth it.
Don't have Train in country I am living stop before I was born, I love these Train love to ride in
Nice video!
Would of been nice if you got some video of it crossing the bridge into Yuma
Nice video.
Nice video. I was there in Gila bend. Can you tell me what camera did you use?
There's a Military train that just passed City of industry Ca an hour and a half ago. Enroute to Orleans on the Sunset Route to Yuma
Wow!!!!!
That’s so awesome. I missed an opportunity to see Big Boy in Chicago. I’m envious of these videos.
Did you notice anyone filming with a drone?
Great work on your editing! ThAnks for posting!!!
Cheers
Doc
Excellent work, Michael is constantly improving
Still don't like the name (probably from younger days)...how about ML Trains?
I love this WWII Steam Locomotive
Awesome footage! Just curious about some of those standing in the middle of the tracks. How is that worked on, because here in germany you pay a hell lot of money, if you do such things. Greetings from germany and big thumbs up 🙂
The scale is different from Japan. Great biglocomotive!
He'll be in my neck of the woods 11/9/19. Departs Bryan, Texas @ 8 a.m. and stops in my old home town of Hearne, Texas at the former SP depot @ 9:15 a.m.
Definitely the exact same train the Christmas movie “Poller Express”
Mr. Mayhem lol no chance
Please compare the Polar Express train to this one
Eagle Eye well the locomotive in P.E was a 2-8-4 Berkshire. The big boy is a 4-8-8-4. They share almost nothing in common with each other
Jaws The Seawing Not to mention Big Boy is much, much stronger than the Polar Express
@@wtf-hc3tp and yet too heavy to-do drift on the frozen lake
Why do we need diesels again? ;) :P
assistance on hills
(Steamers tend to stall on hills)
@@camboi6103 I am surprised about that with Big Boy since he is a powerhouse, and was meant for hills since he climbed the Wasatch grade alone... If anything the diesel is a source for extra breaking and extend fuel life.
@@jesseusgrantcanales or maybe in the event of a break down
@@camboi6103 Perhaps, modern liability issues and all, I find an insult to the engine and makers themselves, and 5 years bringing him back.
@Lee Stahl Yeah. One thing steam locomotives don't have is dynamic brakes.
Aha, I hear my voice at 8:10, was along with Ryan for the day. Nice to see some of the same shots! Were you the one who signed up for TrainMon5 next to Jake? I also see me in the blue shirt at 14:54. Awesome work!
I got a clip when it was in MN
It'd be nice to see Norfolk and Western 1218 out again. Think I like the class As even more than the big boys
Man,so many people aren't listening to the 25 feet clearance warning! Maybe put a big sign on the front maybe?
Went and saw that big boy in texas today
Is Big Boy going to pull freight or Intermodal eventually?
Sometimes it'll pull some freight between excursion destinations but it's exclusively an excursion locomotive now.
Top
11:50 Why does the boiler look like it’s about to fall off?
Trains and Stuff That’s the locomotive’s articulation. The front set of driving wheels swings independently of the rear set, which is attached to the boiler. This way you can take tighter curves than you could if both sets of driving wheels were part of one rigid frame.
Simple the big boy is a duplex locomotive and can take turns better then a single set of wheels
Love to see/hear Big Boy moving along at full chug. The power is amazing. Anybody know if the "assistant" engine(s) shown in the videos are actually pushing/pulling, also?
The diesel is there for dynamic braking only 4014 is doing all the work
And usually for power. Since they don't have electricity of their own
For breaking purposes
Great video. What camera did you use?
I have videos of big boy coming thru Uvalde and San Antonio Texas but I don t know how to up load them. I’m old.
how is it possible that a Steam locomotive can turn in a curve. i mean if you have too much wheels in a to sharp curve, the loco would stuck or hop out of the rail. well a Steam locomotive like the big boy has a joint for sure, but what about the other Steam locomotives?
Is the diesel electric locomotive at 5:12 in the video helping the Big Boy or is it just along for the ride in case #4014 breaks?
It also for dynamic breaking, and yes it is there just in case Big Boy breaks down
@@wtf-hc3tp Thank you.
11:50 Steam bath... :-o
Estou viajando nessa locomotiva.
