I mean, I'm as big of a Kurt Cobain/Nirvana fan as there is but to be fair - TOTP was an absolute decades long institution in the UK that helped launch many a band from first hit newcomers to legends. I think others might just as fairly look at it as arrogant of a brand new band to come on the show and insist they be the first in the show's history to play a fully live set. They could've just politely declined. Of course, everyone, including TOTP I'd imagine is happy they didn't. It made for an absolutely classic moment in music history but still, the point remains.

There's an old video of the Mamas and the Papas doing "California Dreaming" on some show here on CZcams. It's so insanely obvious that they're lip-syncing, it's nuts. Like, Michele Philips is clearly eating a banana at certain points where she's supposed to be singing, shit made me laugh out loud.
This highlights exactly what is wrong with modern bands. Nowadays bands are all "Thanks so much for letting us play, we're so happy to be be here playing for you, thanks for this opportunity etc etc". The rebellious, humours attitude isn't there and if some band did have it, the powers that be are so good at controlling everything these days, the mainstream would probably never even hear about that band. Nirvana was the ultimate example in the 90s of just not giving a solitary sh*t. They knew what was important and what wasn't and they knew what they could get away with. Playing Territorial Pissings live on Jonathan Ross show instead of Lithium was another masterstroke. And trashing the gear. We were so lucky in the UK, we had 3 Nirvana TV appearances, all within the space of a month, and 2 of them were literally legendary, still being talked about 30 years later. I miss maniacs like Nirvana. They had the songs, the attitude and an awesome sense of humour too. Ultimate combination!
