My parents are from different dialects groups (hakka and minnan). I could understand the minnan one, and guessed the hakka one. The southern dialects are so diverged from mandarin northern chinese that they are effectively languages of their own.
Henanhua is a dialect of Mandarin. Hakka, Hokkien, Gan, and Wu are languages, just like Mandarin is a language. Of course, the speakers were speaking some particular dialect OF those languages (as everyone does every time a person speaks any language). There are seven main Chinese languages: Mandarin, Yue, Hakka, Min, Wu, Gan, Xiang. And perhaps a few more, but it's debatable. For example, some people think Jin should be considered as belonging to Mandarin, while others consider it to be its own language. I got the Hokkien one right, since it actually directly said the word "Hokkien" twice. I believe it also said the word Taiwan near the beginning, but not sure. If so, I guess it is probably the Taiwanese dialect of Hokkien (which people in Taiwan normally just call "Taiwanese"). On the Henanhua one, I also correctly guessed that it was a Mandarin dialect, but wasn't sure which one. But since for the other four, it was languages being guessed, and not dialects, I would say I got 2/5 of the languages correct. Most Chinese languages don't have a lot of mutual intelligibility (less than Romance languages, for example), so it would be quite remarkable if you could understand much without having studied them at all. What would be more interesting would be to see how much you can understand of other dialects of Mandarin. You could find some more obscure, difficult to understand dialects. I would also be interested to see how much you can understand of Jin.
