Coaches have to learn how to play in the big12....Strong: "we're gonna run the ball, control the clock and play good defense". Herman:"I don't think we need to score 50 or 60 points a game"...It took Strong 3 years to learn that the Big12 is a different animal, he hire a big12 spread OC, but it was too little too late.
It took Herman 2 years for him to unlearn what he thought he knew about offense before he hired Yursich. Too little too late.
Now we have to watch Sark re-learn how to coach..
      Rinse, wash, repeat.
It took Gary Patterson 1 season to learn that he needed an upgrade to compete in this league.

You talked about the close games that Texas lost, but you completely glossed over the close wins.
      1. Texas had to mount a 15 point comeback with 3 minutes left against Texas Tech to win in overtime.
      2. The game against OK State was also an overtime thriller with refs missing an endzone DPI against Texas.
      3. The game against WVU was won off the backs of the refs and Neal Brown's decision to not kick field goals.
If there is a reality where Texas wins all the close games and competes for a playoff spot, there's an equal reality where Texas loses all the close games and ends up a 3-6 joke that doesn't get to play in a bowl game.

Herman's offensive style just isn't going to work in college today. His most successful season as a coach (The NC year at OSU as OC) it took 3 outstanding QBs to go the full year because of injuries. Herman loves to play "my guy beats your guy" like Texas HS teams did in the 70 and 80's with no regard to what the opponent is doing to you because your guy will beat their guy and loves to have his QB punish linebackers by running straight up the middle.
Getting in the shotgun and running the QB 4 times from the 1 yard line is stupid and how many times have we seen that from Texas under Herman. Even John Mackovic knew the value of lining up in a power formation and running a play action and rolling out and passing to a wide open
I never see big halftime adjustments because they don't expect other coaches to make adjustments against them. They typically don't put away teams that have less talent because they expect to out muscle those lessor players late in the game even when the opposing coaches are putting those lessor players in position to have favorable matchups and make plays to keep games close.

    • @JimBronson
      @JimBronson Před 3 lety

Best post on this subject! Hermensa did exactly that so many times. Most recently notably in the Iowa State game, ran Sam up into the line twice in the 4th when a field goal would have put them up 7. Instead they turn it over on downs. Winning that game and getting to the title game probably would have saved his job.
Beating crappy and/or unmotivated opponents in your bowl game isn't going to save your job.

This year, above all years, with a "down" Big 12 and Senior QB, Herman needed to break his "turtle" mask and go for two against OU for the win instead of playing for the tie, ....grab victory rather than waiting for your opponent to make a mistake, ...."suck it up and pick a number" (DKR).

@@dwaynewilton138 well...Ironically that is the one thing I supported about Herman. I love that he would frequently go for it on 4th. The problems there came down to playcalling and personnel. The ISU game is a perfect example. I am totally ok with going for it because its 4th and 2 and of you can get a TD on that drive, the game is mostly over. Also, every forgets that the D forced a punt immediately after that and the offense came out only managed to run one freakin min off the clock without forcing ISU to even use 1 timeout. Because despite Bijan gettinf 4 yards on first down, they went to two incomplete passes in a row. And back to the 4th down play, they call an insanely slow developing QB run that starts 5 yards behind the line amd ran to the right side that has been the weak side all year when everyone in the world expectes Sam to keep it. I think there was irreparable damage between Tom's and Chris Del Conte's relationship. Maybe even between himself and the boosters who felt they were entitled to some say. Texas as a culture is not place where you can go and just "coach". You have many outside distractions (e.g. Longhorn Network, Boosters) that take you away from being just a 'coach'. Probably why Texas only had but two maybe three coaches that go down in history as good. (e.g. Coach Royal, Coach Brown) You have to juggle a lot of things other than just coaching. I think Herman was not the right fit and had to go. I don't know if Sarkisian is the right pick. It's a lot of pressure and his track record isn't too good with pressure, but who knows maybe he learned some things while at Alabama.

I recall the beginning of the false narrative when the media started promoting Tom during the Ohio State National Championship game. They repeatedly showed pictures of him in the press box and tried to sell us on his unrealistic and unproven ability. From that night forward Texas fans and the media started envisioning him as Texas’ next coach, even before he could show his abilities as a head coach at U of H. You see Texas should win more National Championships but it’s because they don’t have the coach. Coaching is everything and the program makes the player. Every week while watching the NFL, how many WRs, RBs, QBs, OL, DL, LB do you see from Alabama. Every dadgum game and weeks. There is a formula process for success to make each year to the playoffs. You don’t get to lose to OU when they have a freshman QB (that got benched) and you have a returning 8th year senior. In fact it's a great job, even if you get fired you're still making more money than almost everyone in the country. But I wouldn't say throwing around a lot of money makes you a blue blood. Winning championships makes you a blue blood. Texas spends a ton of money for average results. No, they haven't been blue bloods since Coach Royal. They're just spending money like they have a printing press in a desperate attempt to get back to the good old days. It seems like the more desperate they get and the more money they throw the more it slips through their fingers. Every time they fire a coach they have to pay the next one more cause he knows he has to get his nest egg in three to four years after that he's moving again. Coaches look at that job and say, "I'm doomed to fail. No one can please them long term. So, Texas is kinda hiring the same coach. Offensive minded, has HC experience, OC under a future HoF HC.
Sark just has more HC experience.

Sarkisian "one of the best offensive minds in college today"................................Horns avereaged 42.7 a game.In this yr. of having to manage a divided locker room in the midst of "BLM" movement,Herman did a respectable job.Name one other school that had to manage game/opponents and politics EVERY week like he did.The song, changing names of the field, etc.Yeah, all those players were focused on football.........................................right.I think they phucked this guy.Chaka Smart in his 6th year.............you figure it out.

TEXAS NEEDED TO MAKE A CHANGE. HAVE TO WAIT TO SEE IF STEVE IS THE ONE. HERMAN'S PERSONALITY GOT HIM INTO TROUBLE SEVERAL TIMES. HE DIDN'T HAVE THE CLASS OF RARRELL ROYAL OR THE SMOOZE OF MAC BROWN.

Tom Herman did a good job at Texas. Rome wasn't built in a day and should have given him more time to build the program. I always had respect for him and always will. Chris Del Conte is two faced and did Tom Herman wrong personally and professionally. Believe in karma Chris, what comes around goes around

Texas tried to be slick and get Urban Meyer on the down low, not only did he turn them down, it definitely wasn't on the down low as every sports site and network was taking about it within 12 hours.
If you were an AD would you want work with the coach you tried to replace behind his back next year?

Now as for Tom Herman, before hearing about rumors that the players don’t like him, I supported Tom Herman. With so many seniors not wanting to play the Alamo Bowl Game, it made me think they must not like Tom Herman enough. Also it is the Alamo Bowl. Bru McCoy almost came to Texas but then transferred to USC after arriving. Now Xavion Alford is also going to USC. So Texas must be doing something wrong on the coaching staff. I think there’s a lot of talent with Bijan Robinson tho. I think Texas has promising years with Jake Smith, Joshua Moore, Bijan Robinson, Casie Thompson and Alfred Collins on defense. Maybe the players will have a bigger role and will like Steve Sarkisian more. We’ll see what he can do with all the talent and experience at Alabama.

At TEXAS you gotta beat Oklahoma and back in the day Texas A&M it will buy a coach some time,
but then you gotta produce titles and bowls or see ya! Don’t forget the people pleasing you gotta do
with the alumni mafia and the media. All while in the “fish bowl” trying to keep young men focused!

Herman is not the problem at Texas, for whatever reason UT is not developing talented recruits into NFL prospects, this has been a long running problem since Mac Brown left and is only getting worse.

The problem is much bigger than Herman's coaching. The first question I think of is will Sark be able to stop the attrition in Texas recruiting? If he can't win the recruiting battle for in state recruits against Bama, LSU, and OU then will he really be able to elevate Texas beyond the Michigan football limbo trope of perennial 9-3 records?

What's is alarming is the number of top 10 Texas recruits who didn't sign with Texas. Other teams do much better than Texas does keeping the top 10 guys home. Every team loses some but not nearly all of them!!!

Adding new coaches at the beginning of 2020 had all sorts of possibilities. And players would have had plenty of time to learn the new coaches' strategies. But along comes COVID, and that time of learning was gone. That may well be why Texas finished better in 2020 than it began...the players finally got the new approaches. I had hoped for one more year, giving Herman's initial recruits an entire college career to demonstrate the quality of his coaching. But now, that won't happen, and we'll never know what could have been. I'm surprised at the similarities of the records of Herman and Sarkisian. It's as if the University is trying the same approach they did four years ago, all over again.

NCAA done a lot of teams wrong by letting teams start their season late and start at the top of the ranking with only half of the games other teams had played. Even if Texas or Oklahoma had started 5-0 it's a sure bet they never would of mad it pass number 5 in the polls, because the top 4 was already chosen. Why do you think the polls wasn't updated for weeks or until the other conferences started their season. Other teams started off 3-0 and 4-0 before the others ever played 1 game and still couldn't break into the top 4
