  • Ice climbing technique can be taught in a rigid formulaic way, but this undermines the kinesthetic IQ you've developed from other forms of climbing. In this video we present ice climbing skill with the understanding you'll want to progress to more difficult grades versus always sticking to less than vertical terrain. Oh yeah, and we bake a cake too ;)

    Looking forward to lots of practice this season! I like the flow, and the intuitive approach here. And I’m expecting cake when I master it :)

    Question: what happens if you wear boots other than Scarpa? I haven’t seen a single ice climber wearing anything else so far

    i stumbled across this video by accident (or by youtube recommendations, rather). It's one of the most entertaining videos on proper technique I've seen in a long time, if ever.
    Great job!

    This is awesome! I was just realizing recently how I liked drop knees in vertical featured ice and I thought I was doing it all wrong.

    Stupid question, but shouldn't you have straps on the ice pics. What if you drop one, then you can't do anything.

    Nice! I'm no highly experienced instructor, but I suspect this is a fantastic approach for rock climbers transitioning to ice. No surprise that since I, too, learned the traditional triangle method, I feel the triangle more generally works well as a starting point. I'm a little confused at 1:27 about a "tool vibrating"? I'd say when the tool sinks in with a THUNK and doesn't move, AND you pull down to test it and it feels solid, it's GTG. But this IS the overall, out of the box (or triangle!) approach I've been looking for to advance up columns. Love the innovative and humorous presentation, and the excellent demo and narration. Thanks!

    thank you very much for the video. absolutely brilliant! One question: when i simply am standing on features or front points, my calves feel pumped just as my forearm, how do i fight that pump? Calf raises help? Does better body position help?

    • @Peakmountainguides
      @Peakmountainguides  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for your question! There are a number of factors at play with calf pump... your boots need to fit correctly and there's actually some skill involved in relaxing your calves in the same way it's important not to "over grip" the tools. Body position plays a role in this as well and how you're placing your crampons. For example, placing you foot parallel to the ice where you can weight the heel spikes can be very helpful when a placement is available.
