    Templates are one of the reasons why I like Studio One (although I think S1 isn’t the only one that does this).
    My template is basically a three part template. My template will have folders connected to busses for each “sound category” (ie - drums, bass, guitars, etc). I will have all my commonly used fx already populated (there are 10). Then, I will have one of those folders (not linked to a bus) with all my interface I/O. For all the software sounds, I do not have any of them defaulted into the template. For each software sound (ie - Arturia DX7, Vital, etc) I will have a saved “preset” with the instrument and the channel fx so all I have to do to add a sound is drop in an already formatted channel.
    I have found this gives me the advantage of the speed from a pre-populated template but also the creativity of starting from scratch

    I have been "trolling" on FB like for the last for ever, all these youtubers who very proud of themselves, show their "templates" that make them roll down their mouses for two hours, displaying 2,000 freking tracks with all kind of samples. I say that this is not a template, come on! those are ALL YOUR Libraries STORED inside of a project on your DAW. What a difference. My god. I can't get why this seems to be so difficult to get by composers, they are -exactly!- just complicating their job more and more. SO, YES! for this one. Very well said and done. Finally a no-non-sense approach to building A-TEM.PLATE.

    Great content! My approach to this is modular - I don't have an instrumental template per se, but I have hundreds of Instrument Track Presets, each for any instrument/section I own, with all the articulations loaded within it and combined with amazing Cubase's Epression Maps prepared for that instrument/section to switch between arts within a single track.
    So I start with simple "technical" template - Video or Non Video one, with all the technical tracks (tempo, chord, markers, video, sound from video, reference, reverbs, group tracks, sketch piano...) but no instruments, and then, depending on the project, I load selected Insturment Track presets that fit my idea for a piece.
    In that way I preserve what is important for me, which is starting creative process with careful selection of instruments, so thinking conceptually about a musical piece before any single note was played. In that way every projecy has its unique instrmentation, and RAM footprint is much smaller.
    But sure, I'm not overloaded with work, so I can spend a little time choosing insturments. In high-pressure environment it would be concidered a waste of time ;)

    Funny I remember watching you talk about your template on YT more than 10 years ago when you were in Logic! Where does the time go Marc? Do people know you’re one of the OG composer YT guys? Back then it was just you and Alex Pfeffer. Cheers!

    I'd love to see a DAW include "sub-templates" where you can say, "oh, I'm going to need to load my timpani" or, "let's bring in the legatos" and load those instruments you've classified and saved previously. Is there such a thing?

    • @Kappinski
      @Kappinski Před 2 lety +1

      I think FL Studio has that.
      I can drag & drop my "Piano" into the timeline and it loads Kontakt with the right instrument and preset. But I am just at the beginning of exploring that feature.

      Cubase let's you save track setups as presets.

    • @ComposerMichaelDow
      @ComposerMichaelDow Před 2 lety +1

      Yes FL studio save as a layer and it will save anything you want all with loading up the one layer. So you could save a layer to contain all violins. Or all special fx etc. It won't load up your effects though but you could save a patcher to do that but it wouldn't be fun to mix down inside patcher

    I would be very interested in how you can achieve zero latency when playing on keyboard in Cubase. Are you using constrain delay compensation button in Cubase? if so how is it possible that you have all the effects available. Because as far as I am aware when I use constrain delay compensation, everything gets less loud and many of the plugin are disabled. so how is it possible please? :) I would be very thankful for the answer Marc. :)

    Do you think it would be useful to have separate templates for different (even orchestral) genres? For example, one for epic music, one for whimsical, one for thriller etc?

      It is not about setting up your controllers. You got to use libraries that are able to do this changes or do edits in Kontakt.
