I have an MS in Microbial Biotechnology and I used to work in a research lab for a company that developed MIC and KB panels. We always could prove that Bacitracin was more affective for skin infections. Plus when Streptococcus pyogenes was all the rage about 20 years ago Neosporin really took off. I think there was a reporter that said if you put it on your cut right away, you lowered your risk.

Skip Neosporin and bacitracin. Keep the wound clean and put vaseline over it and around it to keep the wound "sealed." Put a bandage over the entire area. Keep doing vaseline once or twice a day. Don't let the wound dry out. Only use an antibiotic ointment if the wound actually gets infected. Otherwise let it heal on its own and this also helps prevent heavy scarring.

One of my patients scared me when it comes to Neosporin. She had an abrasion from scraping her leg falling on the sidewalk. She made the HUGE mistake of not washing the wound with soap and water. Instead, she slathered Neosporin over the wound. It essentially trapped every pathogen and created a deep, tunneling, spiraling wound to her lower leg that is now chronic. I felt so bad for her. I'll trust simple soap and water for the vast majority of wounds now. We only use Bacitracin at the hospital for animal or dirty wounds where high concentrations of bacteria are present.

You’re lucky. It has caused an allergic reaction for me. A small razor cut on my ankle got so inflamed and itchy and took months to heal. During the same time, I also got an incredibly itchy rash on my entire face that not even Benadryl helped stop the itch. I had to instead completely change my diet to low-histamine (very limited and boring) and go to super simple cleansers and moisturizes (sometimes I just had to use water and castor oil or coconut oil). I missed a lot of work since I work face to face with clients. Almost had to take a leave of absence because of it. Oh and guess what my dumb doctor prescribed that made it way worse and burned my skin? Some eczema cream...he didn’t even try to figure out what it actually was. My mom ended up doing tons of research for me and figured out how to help thankfully.

I, too, am a Baby Boomer. Growing up we used soap & water, peroxide and iodine, covered with a sterile bandaid. Once it scabbed over, we no longer used a bandaid, as it was thought to be best. Decades later we learned to keep it covered, as it heals better and prevents scarring.
At some point I began to use Neosporin. I'm allergic to more things than I can list here, but thankfully😅 never had a reaction to Neosporin.

Medicine inspires brand loyalty more than we realise.
I was raised with the antiseptic Germolene. My family is from the UK, moved to the US in 1998. My parents buy Germolene online rather than anything available in the US, bc that's what they trust!
Not sure exactly how it compares to US creams. My dad's not a doctor, truth be told, but he worked in pharmeceutical regulation for decades and he is adamant about Germolene lol
I have a distinct memory of my Dad saying, "Germolene just takes care of everything" (meaning bacteria, fungi, anything that could infect a wound). So naturally now I have Germolene in my medicine box and it's the first thing I reach for. Like "This is what my parents used to take care of the family, so now it feels like I'm safer with it in my home."
Plus medicine can be cultural. My family sticking with Germolene gave me an unexpected understanding of some of the immigrants who came in looking for specific medicines when I worked at an Asian grocery store. They want something they trust!

Honestly if it works it works. Being worried about Neosporin giving a reaction is ridiculous. If it does, just buy something else.
Personally they all work. I will buy what is cheaper. Only thing I've ever had a reaction to was Amoxicillin, and that was two weeks of taking the stuff before my face busted out with hives.
So I was told by my doctor it wasn't even an allergic one which is confusing. (I'm also on an antibiotic daily, and other meds since I am dying.)

In my experiences overusing antibiotics and the like can be worse of than not using any, but what's really bad is not allowing your immune system to even attempt to fight things off.
This will very likely be deem disgusting by some if not many but I think it works for ME and MY lifestyle. I only wash my hands when cleaning or cooking even as a nail bitter, I do bathe regularly good hygiene is a must so it's not like I'm grimey. I'll let 90% of minor cuts run their own course and only treat when needed and I almost never use hand sanitizer.
By staying responsibly clean and hygienic but not using much anti this or that, I'm allowing my immune system to stay up-to-date with what's in my area and lifestyle.

I had skin cancer on my forehead that left me with a large wound to heal. It was doing fine, then a small section opened up and started draining. I put antibiotic ointment on it (off brand neosporin) and it healed right up. Had I done nothing, it could have worsened, opened up more and destroyed my forehead. I also had a fairly large wound on my arm once (not sure how it happened, but it looked bad). I put the ointment and a bandage on it for a few days and it healed up beautifully. My husband didn't listen to me when he had a similar wound on his abdomen. It abscessed and he needed an I&D and oral antibiotics.
I see so many patients with awful wounds that I know could have been stopped early on with just a little ointment, but I can't say anything about it. I wish people would stop discouraging the use of these ointments. They work wonders. And they are fine under a bandaid. There is still air movement under a bandaid. You just don't want to smother the wound and should give it some air time now and then between bandaids.

I had surgery and thought it would be a great solution to my itchy stitches… well, it gave me a poison-ivy like rash surrounding the entire area. It was bad! For minor scrapes, I now wash the area well, pat it dry, and put a thin layer of plain Vaseline. I will sometimes use a clean piece of cotton or bandage (if it needs it). No more reactions.

When I asked about the Neosporin, the ER doctor and the nurse were like nope, don't use that for this or really any cuts, scrapes or burns. As a German, I wonder how you guys can buy antibiotics like candy in the store. Antibiotics, no matter which one, as well as cortisones, you can only and strictly get by a doctors prescription and only in pharmacies here. There you can also get some ibuprofen in lower doses (400 mg) without a doctors prescription, or aspirin. For anything else or higher dosed pain killers etc. you have to see the doctors first, and they would never ever prescribe antibiotics in advance for a simple cut, except it’s a deep one and highly infected. Antibiotics are really the last choice for serious infections and if you have to take one, it should be the right one in a high enough dose for the exact bacteria. Otherwise you‘re risking developing tolerances and you maybe couldn‘t treat certain highly risk infections properly in the future if it would be necessary. 😢

@@I-hate-youtube797It’s pretty bad how much we can get over the counter, actually. The majority of Americans are not qualified to determine when or how they should use antibiotics and it’s going to lead to our demise. Neosporin in all shapes and forms was discontinued in Sweden in the 1940's or something like that. I'd even say that you don't need any kind of antibiotic cream or ointment at home at any time, UNLESS YOU'RE PRESCRIBED IT BY A DOCTOR FOR A SPECIFIC ISSUE! Don't just go dab random antibiotics on your skin without a prescription for it, also don't just take antibiotics at all unless you're prescribed it and take that specific kind in the specific dose for the prescribed amount of time for the issue it's been prescribed for at that specific time!
Using any antibiotics anywhere when it's not needed, just contributes to bacteria developing antibiotics resistance, something which can (and does) cause major issues for both humans and animals alike. Speaking of animals, keep livestock in clean conditions instead of pumping them full of antibiotics (antibiotics that YOU as a consumer will then ingest!)
