Finally we got a performance from NFAK on the channel that has the required audio and video quality for getting acknowledged as great. This video was recorded before I was born what is a fascinating aspect on its own. Nusrat controls his voice like a machine and I wondered how a human can do that. Surely I got an eye on his rhythm because I'm a rapper and ex-drummer myself and I can't tell much about the melodies and harmonies. It was good to see his student Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in this video as well.

It's believed to have 14 vocals scales of throat , but the normal human with big voice as described by Peter Gabriel is not more than five scales during singing, but he told and was astonished to know through instruments his vocal was 14 scales which can be one in millions. God rest him in peace

nusrat done thousands upon thousands of live performances and never fucked up a single note. always absolute perfection.
all of his albums were recorded in 1 take. the live performances are quite lengthy too.
the most naturally gifted singer in human history hands down.

To average listeners this may just be a song but they don't really understand what kind of complexity is taking place.. tabla (instrument) has its own language and nusrat is literally riding on this complex notes/rhythms with unbelievable mastery... look at the way he scales and then uses scathing ragas to drive the whole rhythm...
This takes decades of practice and performance....

You are right he was very blessed, this was always live, improvised and note perfect. He was teaching his nephew throughout by playing with notes and practically flexing his vocal range, speed and ability. This is years of training from a family that goes back generations in musical training and he was a master. Very different from the fame seeking autotune singers we see today.

The vertical small drums placed are tabla, they are usually a pair. Dholak is placed horizontally and is played from both sides.
Also Rahat sings the syllables or what we call Alaap in Qawwali, and Rahat and the tabla player replies just like a chorus does. This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in his Qawwalis. When rahat was a kid Nusrat used to do this battle with the tabla only.

Nusrat Sahab is surly one justified for this respect.. he is a legend of qawali and a person who revolutionized the qawali he took qawali to youth and he crossed the borders to Hollywood and Bollywood... I can understand your thoughts on pauses but with pauses and skips you miss the main essence of UNFAK singing which is "Tharak", Tharak can be translated as Trance. He completely cuts you from the world around you with his dynamic musical capabilities during tharak.
Other thing is that you said that you have "Tum ik gorakh dhanda ho" in your reaction list, that qawwali is for the natives or the audience who can understand the lyrics, it has very strong meaningful lyrics and less vocals. It is another quality of UNFAK that he performed according to audience, if audience is more into lyrics he will also be more into poetry, if the audience more is into music thn raags, vocals, sargams, alaaps and jughalbandi will come into play and some times its mix and match.
