Eurasian Writer i really like these interviewers too bc they genuinely sound so friendly and supportive especially since they understand the struggle w idols that know both korean and english as it's really difficult to be capable of speaking fluently and comfortably in them both. i think what they say about vernons mom is warranted given the situation itself, someone moving to a country that speaks an entirely different language w their partner and a child, and the interviewers even said it themselves: "that's love."

whats interesting is that vernon spent more time in korea than in america, but somehow speaks more fluently/naturally in english than joshua does. Is it just the new york versus california accent? I'm also from the east coast and I think we speak more quickly. Vernon has a really nice speaking voice too

+selppin I think it might be a New York thing... Im from NY and we all tend to speak quite quickly. I have family in La and I've noticed that a lot of Asian Americans from the west coast sound like that. Like Joshua and Mark (from Got7) pretty much have the same accent.

well that's just how it is. Korea cares and focuses more about the face nowadays than the actual talent. if a group just debuted and they're really attractive, they won't receive any attention. it makes me think how shallow minded Korea is nowadays
Well take it easy my friends. Tbvh the idol industry is all about entertainment which could be singing, dancing, acting etc and having a good look is also part of that. Like you spend your free time enjoying beautiful scenic views while many others love staring at good-looking people. Being pleasing to the eyes of the audience is one way to entertain them. And they wouldn't be able to debut with just the face, in fact they still have to get some tough training on singing and dancing to reach a certain standard before their official debut. A lot of trainees got casted for the look but couldn't make it to debut while a lot of so - so looking trainees succeeded, in SEVENTEEN case I'd take Dino for example (some companies may interfere with plastic surgery though). I'd say people born with good look are already 50% born to be stars, maybe super stars. The other 50% takes some other factors like real talents and luck.

I feel like it's not because Joshua was not as natural in English as Vernon. It's just when you're accustomed to speaking one language for a while, switching back feels a little awkward. I love languages, and I've learnt bits and pieces of about seven (I know more in some than others, obviously) but in dreams I get them mixed up? So I'll have "Ja, quiero gu shēn hóng sè fleurs." (Yes, I want nine deep red/crimson flowers) which, in order, is a sentence including German, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, and French. My Japanese teacher finds it particularly hilarious, seeing as I never dream in Japanese (language, not class lol) ^^

I dream in Amurican English and Mandarin Chinese; my fiancé says that I would not only dream but I also TALK IN MY SLEEP using one language on some nights, and switch to using the other language some other nights. I might have also dreamed in both languages in a single night... I apparently dream bilingually very regularly, it cracks my Caucasian fiancé up. One night I heard a song in Spanish playing in the background of my dream, however I don't think I ever actually spoke Spanish in any of my dreams (not that I could remember anyhow). I swear I also attempted to speak jibberish Japanese in another one of my dreams at some point in the past, because I'm studying Japanese on my own right now, that I do remember very vividly.

To be fair, a lot of idols are born and raised in English speaking countries like Joshua but still don't seem to be able to speak the language on the spot. Joshua seems to struggle with vocabulary like most English-speaking idols in the industry, and I always feel anxious watching them trying to arrange their sentences, lol. Vernon on the other hand speaks like a native, I don't get what someone in the comments said about his accent, it's a New York accent unless you're taking his words about speaking Korean better too deep thinking there's something off about his English because there isn't. Oh, and his voice is so sexy, damn.

And then Joshua says he had to learn Korean and that he's from LA so I was expecting him to be fluent but he has a little bit of an accent and I can see he's struggling with forming his words while speaking English... I don't get this logic..
luffybangtan I know, right? It's not just Joshua, I noticed most idols who were also born and raised abroad to still be messing up when speaking English on the spot. The ones that are completely fluent are either mixed idols like Vernon or really rare cases like F(x)'s Amber and the Jung sisters, etc. I personally think idols like Joshua perhaps have their families speak Korean at home or something along the line that might've affected their English while the ones whom are good have fluent parents? I'm so used to it that I get surprised when an idol IS actually fluent. Vernon's case didn't surprise me, though, I mean even if he NEVER been to the US, 90% chance he'd be fluent too because he has a native parent, and mixed kids tend to speak both their parents' languages fluently regardless where they grow up. Also, the fact he uses English at home and his mom not speaking Korean makes me doubt his Korean is better, I just laughed at the fact EVEN the way he speaks is so American xD
+Kylie Stonem The problem is that their bilingual. They probably don't even realize that they have an accent (that was my case). Like, they could learn English in school and stuff but they also spoke another language at home AND they also learn words from their parents. I had (still kinda do) have an accent in English, even though I was born in America, because my father would speak in English and I would copy what he says even though he had a strong accent. Which would explain why I adapted an accent in my English as well. I think the only way that Blank-Americans (and other ethnic group plus American) can have no accent at all is if they spoke English EVERYWHERE and not just at home. Or if they try to perfect it a lot. (I mean, Amber still has a tiny accent too)
But this is just my experience lol
Kimberly Martinez I have foreign friends who speak English just fine and I think it also depends on the person's tongue?? Like a lot of people would never be able to get rid of accents while others can easily do so without even having to live abroad. This case isn't about accents though, it's more of the ability to speak naturally without thinking of finding words or struggling to form the right sentences. Amber actually speaks perfectly if you see her interviews and whatnot, she's quick and super confident like any person speaking in their first language. Then again, Amber is surrounded by English speaking friends in Korea so she practices it daily. My theory is, maybe Joshua and idols like him have been speaking Korean with everyone around them so they get confused and have to think when speaking English again so suddenly 'cause it's been a while since they last spoke it? Regardless, the way he looks when trying to find the right words and using his hands to describe everything is so cute.
Kimberly Martinez I'm in America and my sister and I speak one language at home and English everywhere else and our parents normally just speak in my language but their English is accented and I gotta say my sister has no accent in either language and neither do I. We also have a lot of friends who are bilingual and don't have accents. I just think that they might be twisting the facts a little, like Vernon might be SAYING his first language is korean, but he actually probably knows both languages equally and Joshua must've not known english very well even in america. Why do people say that Vernon speaks English better than Joshua? I think that they both speak in English fine tho lol. He sounds perfectly normal for me. Joshua was probably surrounded by people speaking Korean more than in English. I dunno much about them so far but as I read through, Vernon has a native American mother who doesn't speak Korean. I mean, Vernon has someone speaking in English that's constantly with him. He moved to Korea but his mother speaks to him in English, whereas Joshua moved to Korea after 18 years of living in LA. Of course, he wouldn't forget speaking in English, but think about it-he must've gotten a little rusty after speaking Korean for a long time. It just sounds natural for Vernon because again, he has someone constantly talking in English to him. Joshua, I don't think so...
But then, I'm new in this fandom and don't know much about them so far.

It's probably because Joshua feels awkward. Your bound to mess up a little if your nervous. As for Vernon, he actually did make a couple of mistakes here and there, but you might not have heard it, since he speaks with more confidence.

Like the other person said, I also think it was because Joshua was more nervous, if you listen to other times he spoke English he was more confident, and as such did not stutter etc. It's the same for me. Me and a couple of my other friends went to a studio to do a show that will be live broadcasted on the radio (In my native language). When it came my time to speak, I just forgot how to speak properly. Also in both cases there's also the fear of messing up and saying the wrong thing.
