      I didn't think of yhe Academy as a military school but more as another word for University. At most it would be a merchant marine academy. Their is a deleted scene with Luke's friend, Biggs Darklighter, meeting Luke after Graduating and telling him he and some others were going to jump ship at a certain system and join the rebellion. This was before the jaws came to the farm. Luke tells Biggs something like, "well guess I won't be joining the Imperals."

      Sticky situation to be sure. Luke doesn't like the Empire, as I'm sure many didn't in that galaxy, yet since they controlled everything, if you wanted to learn piloting, you had to do it through *their* academy (hence, "Imperial"). And your move to the Rebellion would need to be VERY carefully and sneakily done, as most likely you would be, cough, forcibly "recruited" into the Imperial navy, as a TIE pilot or whatever (reminds me of the attempted forced recruitment of Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music, before he and his family escaped). How Biggs jumped over to the Rebellion and managed to keep his life (at least briefly before the Battle of Yavin), I'll never know.

    I wouldn't consider myself a Star Wars aficionado, just a casual fan, but even I knew all this. :) One thing I wonder if people have thought about: In the original movie, right before Ben tells Luke that Darth Vader betrayed and murdered his father, Alec Guinness glances down and to one side for a brief moment. This gesture is a microexpression, something that people trained in interrogating people recognize as a sign that the person is lying. But, when that movie was being filmed, there's no way Alec Guinness would have known that. It's unclear why he moved in that way, but it works so very, very well when watching later when we know the character *was* lying.

    • @ryanbauer3680
      @ryanbauer3680 Před měsícem

      Fun fact: During production for Empire Strikes Back, to deter leaks from getting out in the script Darth Vader tells Luke; "Obi-Wan killed your father". Funny enough, from Vader's point of view this is also true to call back to Kenobi justifying his lie.

    • @GrinderCB
      @GrinderCB Před měsícem +1

      @@MSThalamus-gj9oi Alec Guinness was a master thespian with many years experience. Experienced actors know how to prepare for a role. I think its possible that even though he wasn't wild about doing a sci-fi movie that he felt had limited possibility of success, his professionalism made him prepare for it the same as if he were doing Hamlet. He likely looked at the script and read into it the character's background and motivation. Then he delivered his part by acting it well, perhaps better than GL deserved. I understand and agree with the observation of the microexpressions, but top actors can use them to better act out a movie role.

    • @MSThalamus-gj9oi
      @MSThalamus-gj9oi Před měsícem

      @@GrinderCB Of course. My point was that at that time, Alec Guinness couldn't have actually *known* (for sure) that Kenobi was lying. He may have surmised that, or maybe he just thought the character would feel uncomfortable talking about it. After all it was his failing that led to the outcome, regardless of whether he was telling the full truth or not. I just meant that the scene reads really, really well in light of the audience knowing now that Kenobi was telling a bold faced lie in that moment.

      That's a big assumption. There's literally millions of of troops in the Imperial military. Most of them are probably never even on the same planet as Vader or Palpatine. All it takes is a report of "hey this farm kid from Tatooine named Skywalker has abnormally good reflexes" to get the ball rolling, and that ball ends with Luke Skywalker standing in the throne room with Darth Vader and Palpatine.

    • @jayb8934

      @@TimberWolf99 But honestly, what are the odds that such a report would reach all the way up to Vader or Palpatine? If Luke stayed in the Imperial military as a career and worked his way up the ranks, sure. He'd probably end up a member of Vader's personal squadron pretty quickly. But as someone who likely planned to just graduate and leave or do a minimum tour of service... I think you're underestimating what it likely takes to be noticed by the rulers of a galaxy spanning empire among millions of soldiers. Luke would probably stand out to his direct superiors, but they would still be many, many levels removed from Vader and Palpatine.

    • @TimberWolf99
      @TimberWolf99 Před měsícem

      @@jayb8934 Training instructor reports on his abilities. Those reports go up the chain to the head of whichever academy he ends up attending. Those reports are likely automatically flagged as being "of interest", which also automatically triggers an investigation - One that would likely start very low-key, with simple observations and monitoring of his training reports to see if there is a consistent pattern. Once there is enough evidence, one of Palpatine's *many* agents is sent to evaluate and possibly run some form of test specifically for Force Sensitivity which gets reported directly to Palpatine himself. Even if he does graduate without getting clocked, he's still got a few years in Imperial service where he absolutely *will* get noticed.
      And of course, once the name *Skywalker* flashes in front of the eyes of either Vader or Palpatine, that's it. Even if it somehow doesn't happen until after he's served out his minimum contract (assuming the Empire doesn't pull dirty tricks to *keep* people in), he's not evading either of them.

    In my head canon, I always said that Luke was trying to get into a merchant marine type academy, and not a military one. Even Biggs wasn’t wearing an Imperial uniform in the cut footage.
    For those unfamiliar with the merchant marines, the following description describes it pretty well:
    “The United States Merchant Marine[1][2] is an organization composed of United States civilian mariners and U.S. civilian and federally owned merchant vessels. Both the civilian mariners and the merchant vessels are managed by a combination of the government and private sectors, and engage in commerce or transportation of goods and services in and out of the navigable waters of the United States.[3] The Merchant Marine primarily transports domestic and international cargo and passengers during peacetime, and operate and maintain deep-sea merchant ships, tugboats, towboats, ferries, dredges, excursion vessels, charter boats and other waterborne craft on the oceans, the Great Lakes, rivers, canals, harbors, and other waterways.”
    In times of war, the merchant marines can be utilized by the military.
    I don’t think there’s anything that directly contradicts this idea in the films.

    "The academy" doesn't automatically mean the Imperial Academy. We have lots of academies in this country and we typically refer to them more fully by part of their names. Maybe Luke was referring to a different academy, maybe the Han Solo Academy of Freighter Piloting, or something like that. 😂

    The Jedi not being celibate leads to a lot of other interesting points. In Ep.6 Obi-Wan tells Luke that the Emperor knew that if Anakin had any offspring, they would be a threat to him. He says it just matter-of-factly. That was our first hint that Jedi weren't celibate and that their having offspring wasn't unheard of. Now a male Jedi, having had a one-nighter presumably would leave without knowing he'd fathered a child. Or, if the woman tried to contact him, she'd be sent away by the Jedi while he would maybe be made unavailable to her. Basically, the Order would keep them apart if they saw the need. Also, what about a female Jedi getting knocked up? I'd guess that the Order would have a procedure to separate the baby from her at birth so as to prevent any maternal bonding. Of course, much has been written about the maternal drive so its probable that over the years many female Jedi left the Order to have children. Then there's the hereditary Force sensitivity issue. Luke said the Force was strong in his family. So we know that the midichlorians follow family lines. Imagine a female Jedi leaving the Order to have children, and her kids are strong with the Force, and a few Jedi come snooping around to look into taking them to the Order. Since the mother left the Order to have kids, presumably she'd deny the Jedi any access to them. Multiply this over a thousand generations and we might find the galaxy full of Force-sensitive people who didn't join the Order.

    • @tompearce5418
      @tompearce5418 Před měsícem

      Grogu was presumably the child of Yoda and Yaddle, spawned because their species was approaching extinction. Evidently Jedi had enough experience making babies to realise that Force sensitivity is genetic and can be passed on to the next generation. They just can't marry or engage in parenting, and the babies are essentially raised by the Order.

    If Luke had gone to the Imperial Academy, I wonder how long it would've taken before the name "Skywalker" set off amy Imperial alarm bells that might've eventually gotten the attention of Vader and the Emperor. They made sure no one knew that Vader and Anakin Skywalker were the same person, so it stands to reason that they'd have some kind of computer alert system or whatever set up to watch for any mention of that name. I know that the real reason for this is because George Lucas hadn't yet decided that Vader was Luke's father when he shot the original movie, but in Universe it is really stupid that his name was Luke Skywalker and not Luke Lars when we first meet him. If anything, Luke should have found out his true surname from Obi-Wan when Obi-Wan was telling him about his father being a Jedi.

      In the EU novel "I, Jedi," which takes place in 11 ABY, Corran Horn - former Corellian Security investigator turned Rogue Squadron fighter pilot turned Jedi trainee (and my absolute favorite EU character) said as much to Luke. He points out that Luke had been planning to attend the Imperial Academy, and that if he did then the name "Skywalker" on his application would trigger alarm bells all over the Empire. There's a whole subplot around this conversation that would take me paragraphs to explain but in essence Corran is pointing out that Luke is too set in his own ways and clings too much to his own accepted viewpoint, so he's trying to get Luke to look at his own history and the people in it from a different perspective than he normally does. He uses the fact that Luke was allowed to keep the name Skywalker to illustrate his point. It could be that, if not for the whole escaping droids thing, perhaps Obi-Wan WANTED Luke to keep that name so that the existence of someone from Tatooine with that name would flush Vader out so that Obi-Wan could confront him, which shows Obi-Wan was a lot more cunning than Luke gave him credit for. Or perhaps it was something as simple as Obi-Wan wanted Luke to just grow up to be a good man and redeem the Skywalker name. We don't know, and that's the whole point - always consider multiple points of view and don't get hidebound to one particular viewpoint or mindset.

      @@wickideazy Technically speaking, that whole thing was a retcon by the author of the book, because as I said, George Lucas didn't decide that Anakin and Vader were actually the same person until it was time to make Empire, so there was no need to hide Luke's true surname from him in the original movie. Hell, Luke's originally planned surname was Starkiller, which is a terrible name for an optimistic hero. Interesting points on that book, though. I'll have to check that one out. They simply didn’t have a real reason to exist. Felt tacked on. Like a three movie “scourging of the shire” or “Buu saga,” or the last few chapters of The Wizard of Oz, etc. (and, by the way, I love all these franchises…. I’m picking on them because I love them). Sometimes, story writers simply need to know when their story is done, because once it’s done, anything further just seems like an epilogue that’s far too long.

      Also, it’s possible that if they made Rey’s story similar to how Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan did with Creed-same universe, but ultimately a new story, it may have worked better. The fault really was in considering Rey’s story to be one and the same as that of the Skywalker family, when it was its own.

    Also, it's Force *Valor,* not Force Velour.😂
    Valor, like courage.

    Luke wanted to join. But Han and Finn DID. 🤔. As far as the tech…
    The OT follows the Rebellion. The had to use whatever they could acquire. And the Empire directed major resources to the DEATH STAR. Beautiful how

    As far as the Prequels looking more advanced, when you look at the history of the Star Wars "galaxy" it full of ebbs and tides, times when technology just seems to disappear and has to be rediscovered or hs sagnated. I mean the Old Republic stood for a thousand years, yet many aspects of it seen less advanced than say the first 100 years of the Federation.

    Anyone thinking Luke wanted to join the empire 😂😅 needs to read to book or talk to George... no one wants to join but many would go to the academy to get off what ever rock they lived on and then defect. That is what Biggs did.

    When you’re discussing Star Wars, please don’t be wearing a “Discovery” T-shirt. Granted, this was done by the editor, with you popping on screen briefly, but this is the sort of thing that inflames fans who are into the whole “Trek vs Wars” thing…

    Remarkable idea...nothing of the Disney era is real and everyone needs to realize that. More importantly, any new films and stories should go back in accordance with the original books. The real books, from the 70s and 80s....the original real stories, well written thought narrative, especially since Anakin is not from Tatooine. Never was, surprise surprise!!!!! Tatooine is not the center of the galaxy

      P.S. In the true stories....Anakin Skywalker is not a father til in his 30s......just telling yall the real story. Am I the person who remembers this? I cannot be the only person who purchased the books. You folks need to consider what the boosters are doing to your brain.
