Let's Photograph M106 (Galaxy) - Polar Alignment in SharpCap

  • In this astrophotography video, I collect light on a Splendid Galaxy in Canes Venatici known as M106.
    Using the Polar Alignment feature in SharpCap Pro, I was able to achieve my best polar alignment for astrophotography yet.
    Step By Step Process: astrobackyard.c...
    This is a great method for anyone looking to improve the accuracy of their tracking telescope mount.
    The field of view produced by the Altair GPCAM2 and Starwave 50mm guide scope is a perfect pairing for this process.
    In the end, I was only able to capture about 2 hours worth of exposures on M106, but it was enough to reveal the beautiful structure of the galaxy.
    The camera used was a ZWO ASI071MC-Cool, through an Explore Scientific ED102 CF Triplet Apochromatic Refractor.

    When I use Sharpcap to align. I do exactly how Trevor did but also it’s good to double check everything by just clicking restart plate solve then rotate the RA back to its home position and then let the second plate solve verify that everything is perfect. After I started doing that, I can even get my cute EXOS100 to do sub arc second guiding.

      AstroBackyard Thanks for your reply. I learned there are some adjustment screws on the bottom of the vixen dovetail. I was able to adjust those and have a much better result when crossing the meridian. I still need to fine tune it, to dial in GOTO accuracy, but I'm making progress. Thanks again!

  • @GaryMCurran

    Very pretty.
    Got a suggestion for you.
    Once you run one iteration of Polar Align with SharpCap, recenter the mount in the home position, and restart the Polar Alignment. When SharpCap asks you to rotate the mount on the R.A. axis, go the OTHER way, and if everything is good, you should be centered in the box. If not, you may need to check level on the mount (which, of course, should be done before even mounting the head on the tripod).
    Furthemore, after doing your SharpCap alignment, if you can, use the Drift Alignment tool in PHD2 to check your Drift. It should be very close, no more than 2' off, or less, but you can refine the PA with your drift alignment tool. Look for a video on PHD2 drift alignment by Wallrat. He doesn't use SharpCap, just a P.A. scope, but from there, he goes on to show how the Drift Alignment is done.

    Thanks for the great videos you make helping us 'budding' astro-photographers. I just found this video, but have been using the Sharpcap pro polar alignment tool for a while now. It does take a bit of practice to get those final fine adjustments. If I'm say 12 degrees out to begin I tap the mount leg with my foot first to avoid running out of adjustment with the azimuth adjuster bolts. Did you ever try the Sharpcap pro plate solving tool? I can't get it to work 😕

    HI there Trevor, I can't thank you enough for all your informative videos. One question about your polar align procedure using SharpCap: you did mention to proceed with SharpCap BEFORE your normal procedure with the help of the handcontrol with the mount, right? Any explanation for this? Thanks in advance.

    Hi and thanks for the video! I have a ZWO 1600 camera and I was wondering if I would have any luck polar aligning if I put it on my guiding scope which is a Orion 50mm guide scope? I tried to use my guide camera (StarShoot AutoGuider) but don't think it's supported in SharpCap. Let me know what your thought is and thanks again for your video. Pete

  • @argafirmansyah

    Hi, it's really great video...
    Just wondering, you're using PHD2 as your guiding software right? If i'm not mistaken, PHD2 has Polar Drift Alignment as well. which one do you think easier to use; the sharp cap polar alignment or Polar drift alignment on PHD2?

  • @ecaub
    @ecaub Před 7 lety

    I've been using SharpCap Pro with my StarShoot Autoguider and 60 mm guidescope for about a month. It makes PA much easier. I just watch the numbers in the middle and try and get them as close to zero as possible. Following the arrow/target confuses me. I have to use a 5 sec delay with darks on the StarShoot to make reliable platesolves.

    • @AstroBackyard
      @AstroBackyard  Před 7 lety +1

      Yes! I am going to use the numbers next time rather than the arrow - it was a bit tideous. 4 seconds with darks seemed to work well for me. Cheers

    Very nice video. Thank you for this.
    I just have a remark concerning the pronunciation of "Canes Venatici". You are pronouncing "Canes" as if it were the plural of "cane" as in "sugar cane". But it's actually the plural of the Latin "canis" meaning "dog", thus "Canes Venatici" are the "Hunting Dogs", as you most probably know. The correct Latin pronunciation would be "Cáhnehs Venáhtickee" or "Cáhnehs Venáhtisee", with the stress on the "a" in both words. I've also heard the final "i" of "Venatici" pronounced like the "i" in "sigh", with the whole thing becoming something like "Cayneez Vinatisy", but that's definitely not Latin but English.

    Hi Trevor,
    I have been meaning to ask a question on your mount - you are using a carbon fiber 102mm correct? That weighs about 8lbs - do you think your mount could handle an additional 10lbs? I have the 127mm non carbon fiber version which is 18lbs and get mixed thoughts when I ask if the NEQ6 would handle it for Astrophotography.
