  • "Ray of Sunshine" is the first lager recipe I ever made. I've made it once before (somehow I ran out of brews to fill the kegerator so I used it as a fermentation chamber that time). I'm so excited to finally have a way to lager that doesn't prevent me from drinking! I got my hands on Craft a Brew's 'Stasis' glycol system. It's a game changer. It can run two fermenters at different temperatures at the same time and it fits on my little table! *Equipment links below!

  • @TwoandaHalfPintsHomebrew

    Love to see how this turns out. We've got a German pilsner conditioning right now as well. In Scott Janish's the new IPA, he writes that many European hops carry through in the boil very well so first wort-20 min may be more effective than late hopping. I'm gonna compare side by side our early boil German pils to our late hopped/dry hopped Cashmere pilsner. Just yet another thing to experiment with.

  • @MegaStamandster
    @MegaStamandster Před 4 lety +1

    Hey! Great video :) One thing that may make your day easier, a dunk sparge. Yep. So, setup your kettle like you would a normal mash tun, using enough water to get your proper ratio (instead of the full batch volume). Mash as normal. Then use a fermenting bucket filled with enough water (it doesn't need to be hot) and drop your grains in to "rinse" them. Add that water back to the kettle.

    • @FloraBrewing
      @FloraBrewing  Před 4 lety +2

      I used to do that but it just took more time than it was worth, I didnt see any change in efficiency

    • @MegaStamandster

    Great video. Love German pils. Cashmere and Northern Brewer were a interesting choices, you "Americanized" the German pils - I like it! Question is there anything you do or need to do to ensure great head retention in your end result? I'm always amazed at the head retention German brewers get. Interested in your results.

    • @FloraBrewing
      @FloraBrewing  Před 4 lety +1

      I wrote this recipe I think 2 years ago and just rebrewed it without any change. I don't remember having a problem with the head at all but I'm sure it wasnt up to German standards.

  • @djpolancih
    @djpolancih Před 4 lety

    I love your trick with the biab rolling it up with a board. I might have to get one with the straps and follow suit. I have a drawstring. That looks a lot easier
    I use it to band around my igloo mash tun. If you happen to have one, this method really combines the best features of both. Great heat retention with no stuck mashes. I still have my silver bubble wrap for my kettle. I worked so hard on it, I couldn't stomach getting rid of it
    Great video. I am not jealous of your gear at all (I am 🙂)

Plus depending on the rig you are using you can condition the larger in your fridge/freezer at 0-1°C for 2 weeks then clarify (all in the one container) then one done you should have a nice clear lager in about 3 weeks total. why carapils? I'm curious why you'd be trying to add body. I also see you don't have on your ferm schedule a diacetyl rest. I'd be concerned as most german yeast strains have high sulfur content and lagers have diacetyl issues. Lastly,You really can't call that a german pilsner with your hop choice and schedule... also the carapils.
