    How wonderful to hear the original setting of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." According to Wikipedia, this is the translation from the first chorale when it is sung:
    Well for me that I have Jesus,
    O how tightly I hold him
    that he might refresh my heart,
    when I'm sick and sad.
    Jesus I have, who loves me
    and gives himself to me,
    ah, therefore I will not leave Jesus,
    Even if I feel my heart is breaking.
    And the second chorale:
    Jesus remains my joy,
    my heart's comfort and essence,
    Jesus fends off all suffering,
    He is my life's strength,
    my eye's desire and sun,
    my soul's treasure and pleasure;
    Therefore I will not leave Jesus
    out of heart and face

    • @tonyd3166
      @tonyd3166 Před 4 lety +2

      Not bad but works much better in German:
      Wohl mir, dass ich Jesum habe,
      O wie feste halt ich ihn,
      Dass er mir mein Herze labe,
      Wenn ich krank und traurig bin.
      Jesum hab ich, der mich liebet
      Und sich mir zu eigen gibet;
      Ach drum lass ich Jesum nicht,
      Wenn mir gleich mein Herze bricht
      Not that i'm a christian btw, but Bach transcends every damn thing.
      My dad was a Christian and Catholic rather than Lutheran but above all a good guy. I requested this wonderful chorale at his funeral service but refused to request it in the well-known but not very accurate and not very beautiful English translation - it took about 10 minutes for the PP to realise that Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben was what he knew as Jesu joy etc...

    0:09 It is very nice that Maestro Harnoncourt is happily conducting the BWV147. The orchestra and chorus are perfectly integrated.
    25:56 He's totally in the zone here. This is a really great performance.
