My dad had this setup on my Grandfather's farm. He mounted his on his AC D-17. This was back in the 1970's. Good memories.
I thought we were the only ones still picking corn with mounted new Idea pickers. We mount on a Farmall M and I've been doing it so long that I can get the tractor ready and mount it on by myself in around three hours. Takes the most time getting the tractor ready than it does to mount the picker. You did a great job documenting how to mount a picker. 👍
Thats Awesome I'm glad to know someone else still picks. Thanks for watching!
Back in the 60’s my dad mounted a JD picker sheller on our new IH narrow 706
@@GierokFarms thanks so much for the videos
@@traderjack6151 Thank you for watching!
What a great down to earth video. The videography and narration are excellent in my opinion/
i grew up on a farm in central Iowa. The last year Dad and I picked ear corn was in 1970. December 10th he decided to go deer hunting with friends, and said, "If you want to, the tractor is full of gas and there's 2 empty (Stanhoist barge box)wagons down at the south farm." I could tell by his tone of voice he didn't really expect me to go pick corn in 10 degree weather. But teenagers can be stubborn, so I drove down to the south farm, fully expecting the old John Deere 620 (with a New Idea picker mounted on it) wouldn't start, and I could tell Dad that I at least tried. Well, she popped right off and I was stuck filling both wagons, crouched down to get as much engine heat as I could. Dad was pleased when he got home that night.
I had a 656 that did all the picking and shelling of about 250 acres for 7 years I loved that tractor and my oldest son loved it for raking hay
I’m addicted to watching these
😊 I can remember the early 70s up to 1975 Green Giant had 2 row pickers on Tractors for picking Sweet Corn ??
Oh man do you guys bring back memories. I'm 62 and we just stopped picking corn and went to shelling, I got a bum knee and my son has trouble with his hip plus all our cribs a wood and shot.
Dad started with a woods then his brother bought an 88 oliver and an oliver mounted picker. Dad said that it was heavy and they broke a rear axle one year in sub 0 weather in the driveway. They jacked it up and changed it there. That next year they traded on a New Idea, much lighter and A LOT easier to mount. Still remember that 88 in the chicken house that we used for a shop, had to support the whole back end and switch the tires, cast hubs and all side for side to fit the picker. but after that it went on slick. I helped my maternal grandpa mount his John Deere one time, good picker but a nightmare to mount. We went from an 8 roll to a twelve roll later. I only ever ran it one time to open a neighbors field. Dad always picked with our neighbor, his second cousin Maurice. He always ran the picker, he had 5 boys and they did their own. Dad just had me and all we ever did was unload. I remember Maurice coming off that thing black as the ace of spades some years. Then we went to narrow rows, bought a 400 JD picker, damn good machine but too heavy really side dragged in wet years. Finally purchased a used 1970's 701 uni picker. I kept that thing running for over 30 years. finally retired that thing and got a nice 708. Like going from a gremlin to a caddy. Only used it for 4 years and now we're done. I think I'm going to put a sheller on it just for the hell of it. Just watching you mount and use that picker almost made me cry.
PS I live about 10 miles from the old New Idea plant in Coldwater Ohio. Always like UNI's
Thanks again

I'm very happy we could bring back good memories for you! I've always been interested in Uni pickers they look very cool! Thats awesome that you live so close to where they were built! Thank you so much for watching!
One of your best videos yet, well narrated and well edited, and really interesting to watch. Keep them coming looking forward to watching the picker in operation.
Thank You!
Excellent video. great to see old technology still being used for reasons other than a farm show or the like. You all seem like good farmers. I bet you keep your debt down to almost nothing. Loved it..Thanks, A Combine is such a complicated, expensive, high maintenance piece of equipment that even farms your size use. You all walk your own path. Very cool. Very rare.
Is there a Part 2 video where you guys hook up the GPS and the Auto Steer??
It's so great to watch you guys staying with the old ways and equipment. There's just a small handful of guys left who would even know where to start on this project.
LOL Thanks Rob!
Привет из Росии я думал што в Америке уже такое старье на мусорке , но вы молодцы интересно смотреть как вы на старой технике работаете , здоровья вам крепкого
I Remember my grand paw talking about these pickers when i was a kid But i dont remember us ever having one ..i remember the old 1 & 2 row pull behind We still use an old 2 row pull behind picker now days ! myy grand paw got his hand ground up/Crushed in a old 1 row picker years before i was even born & the doc saved his hand ..He knew what was coming and just yanked his arm out before it pulled him in !i want to see it picking Corn now..lol.
That 686 sure is a nice tractor.
I submit THE least likely person to post here is me. We are concrete jungle dwellers, drive the heartland every year and vacation in Oconto Co in summer. I've rebuilt and cracked open a few engines and transmissions, but I am stunned at the relative complexity and number of moving parts, plus keeping those old machines running. You guys "rock". There are a few of us out here who appreciate what you guys do to basically feed the world. Blessings . . . .
Thank you that means a lot!
Well this is Bob & not my wife as pictured. We never had a picker or sheller but a JD silage 1 row chopper to fill the silo. We always did this with my uncle Lars, He'd put his IH 450 on the JD chopper & we had a W-9 on the JD silo blower. Would chop into truck boxes a 8'x12' box with hoist & back up to the JD silo blower & fill the silo. Had two silo's to fill. We quit do this in the mid 1960"s. Thanks for your posting your farm & I know since we still farm its alot of work.
@@debraevenson2336 Thanks for watching!
I sure do enjoy this kind of stuff great video
Brought back memories. Dad bought a new New Idea picker in the fall of 1972. 319 gathering unit, 322 twelve roll shucking bed, and a 315 sheller. Mounted it on a 1550 Oliver for 10 years or so. We normally kept the original wide front on the Oliver as we plowed, planted, sprayed etc. with it too, so we changed that out every fall as well for some added fun. Overall, with some help it’s not a bad job to mount and the New Idea does a good job both picking on the ear and shelling. We farmed in central IN then, and sold the outfit to somebody in Wisconsin. Thanks for sharing, good job!
Glad we could bring back memories, Thank you for watching David!
I keep a leaf blower handy when picking corn or combining. Used an air compressor for a while but it was harder to keep where needed and the leaf blower does almost as good of job blowing out the dust and residue.
Great stuff very interesting how that works👍👍👍👍
Love the channel! You guys and Trinity Dairy are my favorite channels! Old school is the only way to farm!
Thanks for sharing this is interesting 👍👍✌️
thank you for watching!
I just saw a little black dog. I used to have a little black dog myself. He was a Patterdale terrier cross with a border collie. His name was dipper after the bird. He was the most intelligent dog I had ever seen.
Nice, this dog you seen is named River and is a springer/great pyrenes mix!
really cool seeing old equipment still running and cool the tractor still has the old dealer decals. as soon as I saw Arnolds on it I knew where it came from.
Isn't it crazy how every piece of equipment has it's own story!
You mentioned the Woods Bros picker - that is what we used and husking out the first two rows - of yes, the memories!
Wow I mounted these pickers many years ago on different tractors while in a dealership. Once everything was adjusted properly on a new install, they were easier to mount the next time. Never really enjoyed service calls on these machines. Thanks for a great high quality video that shows how the mounting is done.
Great video and very nice 686
Thank you!
I love how you showed how the picker went on the tractor ! You don't get see videos on how they were put one on , I might need this one day . I grew up on my grandparents farm in the 80's and we still picked corn with a mounted New Idea picker on a Farmall M . Spent a lot of hours dodging ears of corn in the back of wagon . My grandpa had a tractor for every job on the farm so I never saw the picker ever come off and on . I wish I had the money to buy a picker and tractor to save from going to scrap and to just play around on to be honest . We got about a 2 acre field that I could plant out if I was ever to get one . Thank you so much for sharing !
Thanks for watching, I hope the you get your own picker! Best of Luck!
My cousin in Iowa was fortunate in that as he upgradeded his farm he bought eventually bought a larger tillage tractor and was able to leave his cornpicker on either an H or M international permanently he farmed roughly 300 acres and ran several head of beef cattle mostly by himself with his wife and daughter in 1983 the drought was so bad that he and a neighbor took and lined his neighbors old dairy barn slab with round bales and made an emergency trench silo and tgey cut the majority of their corn crop for winter feed that year. Glad he had that option. He had bought a roundbaler in the late 70's primarily because of the labor problems associated with needed for square
baling, same reason another cousin in western Arkansas went from square bales to round balesin the early 80's
Enjoyed your vedio. Mounted many pickers in my live time. Start helping my father with a international 22B on a farmall F20. And John Deere 226 on A's and 227's on 70's. Was planing on get a New Idea in the 60's But when to combining. You did the right think by servicing your tractor before putting the picker on. We always did but help a neighbor who didn't take of care thinks and plugged the fuel filters a JD 70 D on the picker in the field that was fun.
Brought back a lot Memories.
Early 70s grandpa had pull type chopper and mounted corn picker. We opened fields to choose by hand outside 2 rows
Uncle had a AC WC with a mounted picker that had an under body husking bed, bought it
right after the war, mounted it once and then never took it off. Used if for nearly 30 years, about 4 days a year. Alway wondered why he never took it off. Now I know. We had a 2 row pull type New Idea and before that a one row IH PR-1
Sweet! Thanks for watching!
great video and a good looking tractor. I have an '68 model 656. it was like looking at my tractor's big brother.
Thank you! That sounds like a nice tractor!
Awesome video team. Love watching older machinery still being used. All the best 👍
Thanks Steve all the best to you!
Every year when I was a kid we had to mount a New idea picker to a 4020 John Deere. EVERY YEAR! Until I moved away and then dad built a few grain bins and combined everything.
Seems like that's very common, once the kids move off the farm then the nice and easy to use equipment shows up lol!
Thank you so much, great great men
Thanks Kelly!
Brings back memory’s. I ended up with a 630 j d when I quit picking
I would like to see a JD picker in action!
Growing up on a dairy farm in NE Wisconsin in the 1950s. I learned just enough about dairying to have a deep regard and respect for people who do it well, like you folks. Thanks much.
Thank You Michael!
Hard working and crazy guys, all the very best
Watching this from an African country, we grow corn which we maize and ours generally. Over 90% harvesting is done by hand, sad to see such machines are no longer in production considering that we have lots and lots of tractors. We need this.
New to the channel and really enjoyed watching. When I was 7 years old back in 1965 my job was to drive a Farmall B with a two wheel trailer and my parents and grandparents would pick corn by hand and throw it in the trailer. When I got older then I had the luxury to pick it by hand. Later on my dad got a one row Idea corn picker and pulled it behind his Farmall 200. Then I had the job to get in the trailer with a pitch fork and make sure it was spread evenly to get the most amount of corn in the trailer. It was hard work but by the end of the day back then ,we really felt like something was accomplished. Thanks again for the great video.
Welcome and thanks for watching! Both of those farmalls are sweet tractors!
Very interesting, great video. I have never seen this type of machinery mounted before. You and your family are hard workers, there is no doubt about that. God bless and I hope your corn harvest goes well for you.
thank you for making the video i love older farm machinery
Love the old school ways
Thanks Bill
I like watching you guys put the picker on the tractor I hope you let us know when you're picking corn I'd like to watch that
TY for sharing these videos! Love the older equipment!
My neighbors picked ear corn with their 686 and mounted picker until they sold out 4 years ago. I miss living next to a dairy farm. It’s amazing how many people think as soon as you drive a NF tractor out on a hillside it’s going to upset……
That sucks that they sold out.
Old school I love it. Always cool to see a corn picker in action especially on a red tractor. Cont success
Thanks Bob!
Hello there. We love those older tractors we have a few our self's. We have Nuffield and Fordson, International, Massey Ferguson, David Brown and Alis Charmers and lots more. They were all around 60 HP.
I've never seen a David brown in person sound like cool tractors though!
Great video ❤
Thank You!
My neighbor used New Idea picker/ shelter. My father used internationals. Had two 234 s they went on and off the 560 very easily. We could open a field for chopping then pull chopper boxes soon after with the same tractor
Oh Nice!
These guys are real farmers
I remember mounting one of those on an AC WD45 it took the better part of a day. We eventually got to the point we left it on there. I really enjoy your videos thanks.
This is awesome! As a kid used to mount ours on a Farmall 460 and then a Massey 180 with a custom single tire tricycle front tire. Like you guys said, alignment was always the biggest issue.
Thanks for watching Tim!
I grew up in 1970s. We had the same picker on an International 706 gas. I remember it took a day to mount the picker. We ran 10,000 to 12,000 bushel a year. Usually took 7-10 days. Some of my best memories growing up on the farm were with that old picker.
That sounds like a sweet setup
Great job explaining the mounting procedure . A big help to someone mounting a picker for the first time . I mounted a 319 yearly for 20 years on a JD 3020 . I can relate to every sequence involved . Looks so familiar . Brings back memories .
Brings back a ton of memories! My father bought a picker and a International 706, with a husking bed and shelter. It was not mounted, and we had never did it before, what a project!!!! With our learning curve it didn’t go quite as smooth as your video, But I picked a lot of corn with it!
Awesome seeing that Trempealeau county dairy breakfast sign up there. Love you videos, makes me miss growing up on my grandpa's dairy farm in onalaska. He also had a 2 row corn picker mounted on an 806. Keep the videos coming!
Great documentary on this laborious process. The sidehill hitch is pretty slick. I think one reason the New Ideas caught on was that their husking bed was much improved over older models.
Thank You you for watching!
I just stumbled across this and subscribed immediately excellent videos sir
Welcome and thank you Craig!
Been enjoying your videos here. We run about 50 beef cows in the mountains of VA. Thanks for making them.
Sounds like a great place to farm! Thank you for watching them!
That was amazing
That is a clean 686 to have 5800 hours on it. Love your barns. No wonder folks left them on all year...
It's a proses, Thanks for watching Johnny!
Great video guys, very informative. Never seen a mounted picker before. Love the tractor lineup you have, especially the 686. We had an 806 growing up that was my favorite.
Thank You!
Thanks so much for filming this video!!! The dairy farmer next to our farm used to pick his corn and ours as well. He had a JD picker mounted on a JD 60. He never took his picker off unless he had a tractor problem and had to. I never got to operate his picker but was always facinated by it.
Thanks for watching Tom, That JD sounds like a sweet setup!
Very interesting info on that picker. Looking forward to seeing it i action. New Idea pull type pickers were very common here back in the day, every farm had crib. They local feed mill had a mobile shelled/ grinder on a truck. All combine around now.
A grinder on a truck sounds very interesting! Thanks for watching Mark!
Your videos are awesome
I grew up on a small dairy farm in Australia & your videos remind me of our gear. A couple of modernish main tractors & older gear for seasonal jobs like harvest.
Your farm & infrastructure is presented beautifully 👍
Yep, we're still doing it with a M. Nothing like it.
Great video. Well explained for those that want to know the old way.
Heck, if all you need is what you're gonna use on the farm then why spend a couple hundred thousand dollars for nothjng.
Take care.
Your dad is an interesting guy to listen to
Great video thanks.😊
That picker looks to be in good condition. I used to have on of those I mounted on a 656. I had the husking bed and sheller unit. Ran that for about six years or so, then purchased a Uni-System.
Both sound like a really nice machines! Thank You for watching!
Awesome, keeping traditions alive!
Another great video. Thanks for sharing your farm life.
Thanks for watching Jason!
Love the videos good to see the whole family in the video supporting it. Never used a mounted picker. Always a new idea 2 roll pull behind. Very informative.
We tried our best! Thank You for Watching!
Brings back a lot of memories. Dad and I had a picker just like this on a 504 farmal.
Glad we could bring back good memories!
sure you make it look easy
Thanks Joe!
Enjoyed this video. It did make me pretty glad I use a IH 234 corn picker mounted on a 656. Very easy mounting process on the 234.
Just happened to come across your video and I have help mount a 2 row picker as a much younger man on a local farm near my home. But there is still a few here in Ohio who have mounted pickers. We had a John Deere 2 row on a 720 gas. Then a New Holland on the same tractor. When the old farmer retired he had a 2 row pull type using his 806 diesel on it.
Just as you said, this was a very informative video. Great job!!
what a nice clean shop makes working on equipment more enjoyable!! fun to watch a farm that puts in the time to do it right and enjoy the equipment from the 50 and 60s time frame when l grew up farming! l will be watchin!!!
Great walk thru showing the processing getting that unit attached.
Thanks Jay!
That was a great video. I have never seen how to put on a picker like that The only thing I have ever seen is a pull-type picker course no one around here picks ear corn thank you so much for sharing and explaining
No problem thanks for watching Kory!
Fantastic video. It’s great that he isn’t shy about explaining things. So many farmers I knew growing up were really tight-lipped, as if speaking wasn’t necessary. I like the little wooden wings added at the tops. They’re probably for deflecting something, but they make it look zoomier. 🤓
Thanks we tried our best!
Great video, learned a lot!! Thanks 😊
The video was awesome so cool to see thank you for taking use with you.
Thank You for watching!
Brings back memories
We had the exact same tractor and picker
Took 2 days to get everything out and ready to go to the field
Put the picker on
Get the elevator ready and in the crib
Get wagons ready
Remember it well
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching Nick
I came close to buying a one or two row pull type picker in the early 80's but, I didn't have the corn cribs or the livestock to justify it. I usally planted a 1 acre of field corn and hand picked it and put it in the old barn crib for our two heifers
Y'all are great
That's pretty cool, when I was little dad had a 234 picker he ran on our 656. The good ol days 👍
That sounds like a sweet setup! Thanks for watching!
Growing up in a farming area, we were always in school when the pickers were mounted or dismounted so I never got to see this done. The same with filling silo once and a while I got to unload the last load of the day into the silo but that was about it. Thanks for showing the process.
Thanks for watching Frank!
So well done and interesting. Makes me appreciate all the hard work my Dad did on the farm that I wasn't aware of growing up. I grew up on the Alma bluff and my mom grew up on a Waumandee farm. Was to breakfast on that farm a few years ago. A lot of great memories. Thank you.
Thank You!
Great video, sure brought back memories. I had a 237 New Idea on a Oliver 770 picked a lot of acres with that set up.
Sounds like a heck of a unit! Thanks for watching Keith!
Thanks for this video. Learned a lot. Never been around mounting a corn picker before. It seemed my dad always hired someone to pick or combine his field corn. They have a reputation as very dangerous machines. I remember at least one friend of my dad lost both arms because he tried to clear the machine with it running.
Excellent video! Well documented with filming and of course explanation of what was involved in the process of mounting the picker. Shed provides good shelter/storage for your equipment, everything looked fresh and clean like it had just finish the picking season instead of just the beginning. New subscriber, all of the equipment I've seen so far looks like it is well maintained, I am sure it will be around for many more years!
Thanks Dan! Welcome to the channel!
I found you yesterday when you were grinding feed. Now you're picking corn. We use a pull behind New Idea picker. I'm in northcentral WI and much of your stuff is a lot like our stuff. Cool channel you have there.
Great video!! Keep them coming!
Thank You!
I had a International 234 picker, mounted on a 806
Oh Nice!
Boy, that's a blast from the past! I ran a 319 on a Farmall 460 for a lot of years. It's a dirty job. It would take a lot of persuading to get me back on a mounted picker.
It sure is a dirty job! Thanks for watching Pete!
My uncle use to run one on a 656
That's a good combination!
My dad remembers doing this as a kid but he was to young to really help and hasn’t ever done or seen it since, he was wondering if you ever let visitors come and watch you guys pick corn
Worked on a farm in the 70s in Germany, my respect for handling those complicated setups.
As always great shots and editing!
👍👍👍👍
