Your questions about what genre it is, how a bit confused you are about the kind of sound they're projecting, makes so much sense (in a good way).
This is simply pop rock music. At least, how it is executed in Japan. Modern Japanese music garners immense influences from European elements. And then overtime, it just became what it is. As Marty Friedman from his recent interviews in JROCK NEWS said that in Japan, people can and will try to mash as many genres as possible, to possibly create an entirely new thing that, to us listeners, will often see it as "Japanese style". What you heard just now, ESPECIALLY the basslines. THAT is Japanese music. It is very melodic, very progressive, very ingenuitive. It tries to create its' own as it builds on top off already existing musical material.
The bassline especially, you will not be able to hear any other crazy bassline like this but in Japan, whether it's rock, pop, metal, etc. (you will be able to hear this more in OOR's earlier stuff too, but also for newer ones like Vandalize).
Speaking of, with relation to OOR, they are really on the other side of the spectrum vs. MYFAS (this is how they are called in Japan), in a way that they both started off with lots of western influences, but OOR stayed with that, and MYFAS molded themselves into their own Japanese flavor.
You definitely have a LOT more to hear from MYFAS, you might not like some of their stuff and that's totally okay, but they're one of the bands that lean more towards the J-rock style if you're curious about it.
EDIT: I totally forgot to say that “I’m a mess” is their biggest hit yet. This song came out earlier… it took like over a year or so I think before the mainstream caught up with it. It’s a hit pop rock song in Japan.
MYFAS Songs:
- If you want to go real heavy and tight, go REVIVER, Fukagyaku Replays or Itsuwari NEUROSE
- If you want something more lean back, go "Accident", "moonlight"
- If you want something more on the ballad-ish side, "With You" is gonna do it
- The acoustic version of "Home" on the first take is what you might be looking for from them. It's a very personal song that Hiro wrote that tells his family's story, and also his wishes.

MY FIRST STORY! Been requesting this for a while! I love them! They just released a new song today called Boyfriend. I think you should look into Reviver. The First Take version of I'm A Mess is a lot different than the original. Dreaming of You has a Jpop vibe. The First Take "Home" Is acoustic and it's his version of the song like One Ok Rock's Nobody's Home.

I don’t listen to MFS a lot these days but I will say I think “I’m a mess” is different from their usual sound, I’ve definitely gotten more of the rock vibe from other songs of theirs. That being said, this song is my favorite since I’m a pop rock kind of gal, so perhaps I’m not the best judge of that. Hiro’s voice and style is quite different from Taka’s though
