I play two players with my 10'year old son. It's easily our favorite to pull out. There is something indescribable about the fun factor. There's a lot of card reading but it's still really fun. If we had a fire, this would be one of our quickest re-purchases.
If you are playing with two, i recommend having to get a full party, and three monsters to win (both requirements instead of one or the other). Otherwise it will be over in less than 10 minutes.
Yeah I just bought this game today and that's a pretty good idea for a two player variant rule!
Over in 10 minutes sounds perfect. I like having small games I can play with my kids when they want to "play just one more game!"
Or if you want the game to never end, give both players the thief party leader. Because if everyone's super, no one is.
But I guess the more realistic approach is to set a timer and once the timer ends the player who was the closest to winning wins.
Since there are 2 ways to win, we can judge based on what % you were to winning.
So a player with 3 monsters is 75% to winning, and would be beaten by someone with 5 out of 6 classes of heroes, who was 83% to winning
Actually, scratch the timer, there should be a max amount of moves instead, so no one can stall out the game when they are slightly ahead of everyone else. The limit depends on the people playing
I've played with 6. Just got the expansion for 8 players. Full game of adults and we had a blast. First game is longer. 2nd game was 25min, 3rd game 40min. Sometimes you team up to keep the game going or band together randomly to hope for teammate support later. Friends stopped asking for cards against humanity at parties after I busted this out. Working on house rules for teams of 2. Might increase monster slay win-condition to 5 for longer games. Setup is fast and rules were straight forward. Having the card that tells you everything you can do on your turn was a big help for new friends.
Even for people who played this game for awhile. I always need a reminder that I can draw 5 and skip my turn anytime
"I don't have that problem, I just taking out ppl right and left". Tom is such a badass.
Until now I got what you mean by this specific part you are referring to 7:59 about what Tom's quote
Bought it on a whim a while back and now it's one of my favorites.
My niece and nephew brought it with them and played with 2 of my kids, ages 8-11. I didn't get a chance to watch them play, but I heard them laughing the entire time from the other room.
I backed this game and I'm glad to see it get DT approval. My group of 40 something, old school gamers all enjoy it. It's fast, light and fun with tongue planted firmly in cheek. It makes a nice topper to an evening after a long, heavyweight game or for passing time while waiting for latecomers. (Requiring both a full party and three monster kills is a good way to extend the game if you find it to be too short.)
OMG! I'm so glad you came back around to review this game... our family LOVES this game. There is 'take that' but the cards are so playful that no one takes anything seriously. Napping Nibbles. Best card ever. We've been playing it again and again for months... and the hilarious part is that I never knew we could discard our whole hand for all three actions until I watched this video. 2:20 🤣 What would we do without you, Tom!?
You never read the small instruction cards that you hand out to each player?
I can't believe Tom gave this a positive review. Fantastic! Can't wait to play. Great review like always.
He doesn't even fully know why he likes it. But there are also a lot of expansion packs to get if you ever get bored
I bought this game a while back and I can’t believe you did a review! So glad that you did. Love the game
I dont mean to be off topic but does anyone know a method to get back into an instagram account??
I somehow lost the account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me
Just picked it up this weekend. 3 plays in and I really enjoy it, however, card sleeves are definitely in order. The cards are very thin and I see them wearing out quickly.
"I wanted to hate this, but I just cant.. Approved!"
A friend of mine got stuck in a game of Unstable Unicorns that lasted HOURS due to the endless back-and-forth in that game. While I don't have much interest in this game, it's nice to see that they seemed to have improved the game arc here.
YES! I haven't ever had it get that bad, but I have had 4-6 player games drag on way past enjoyment. I dont like pulling out Unicorns; this games feels like I'd have fun with the short games.
As someone who also isnt a huge fan of munchkin, I also quite enjoyed this one. We've only played at 2, but increase the amount of monsters you need to defeat for victory so it last a little longer. Also think thos one is theme and art. Much more pleasing to me personally.
It’s a solid little game, played it maybe 7-8 times and it was fun every time! Maybe doesn’t have infinite replay ability but good times. Worth it IMO
Some games just have that little bit of magic that makes them better than they should be. Ramy Badie has a special touch.
what’s the max amount of cards in hand
8:55 What shirts are you talking about?
I think I have the same sentiment as you Tom. I thought this was what I wanted Munchkin to be. I enjoyed it just because it was so quick to play.
my unboxing is quiet different with yours... my box is smaller from yours.. is it possible that I got the fake one?
Bought it because it was on sale for about 11 dollars but I cant imagine I'll be playing it any time soon ☺️
You should give it a try! I'm gonna sound sexist (and age...ist?), but it's perfect for crowds that have women and children 😅
Hello, love your page! Sorry for the long message but I had a few questions regarding the game Here to Slay:
1. Can more players play with each addded expansion pack? (Like Upto 8 players with 1 expansion and upto 10 players with 2 expansions?)
2. In order to win, with each expansion how do the rules change?… How many monsters have to defeated AND how many heroes have to be collected in order to win with 7/8/9/10 players respectively??
3. Out of the two available expansions (W&D and B&N), which one would you recommended and why?
4. If we want to play with 4 players but want to select a Party Leader from an expansion pack.. how do we proceed?
1. Yes, it can
2. Just add more cards, no rule change
3. Both, they all get the unique fun ability
4. You should random the party leader, that will make it more fun and surprise
Huh... That art is beautiful!
Probably the only game I have ever purchased before Tom released a review for it. Glad I did!
4:25 “Why are you doing all of this? Because you’re trying to win.”
You don’t say😨
Sorry I had to lol. I Love this review. I always look at this channel’s reviews before buying a board game😁. Thank you for what you do!
Strange, that Tom said everything is easy to read. I remember multiple games, where he critisized some small text, but had suddenly forgotten it in this one..
Well, he said he only played it with 3 people, so the cards might have been close enough to read for him. That or the much more fun option of they dramatically shouted aloud the card and what it did yugioh style.
Can someone tell me what to do when everyone in the game has no action points
I totally agree with Tom on every point (except one). I didn't care for Munchkin, I don't like RPGs or dungeon crawlers, or hit points and modifiers and level ups, yada yada yada. However, this is quick and easy, with no DM concocting some BS outcome. Approved.
(A defeated monster is not attached to or used for just one hero.)
70 dollars for exclusive edition and playmats, Is that worth it?
Super surprised this review exist. Super surprised he enjoys it as much as me!
I love Here To Slay. I got the Kickstarter exclusive edition
Was it worth it? I honestly can't see any use for the acrylic stands. I will admit however that they look damn gorgeous.
Nice
The final thoughts sounded a lot like similar reasons folks like King of Tokyo. Would those that love king of Tokyo likely enjoy this one?
Perhaps, but it is a lot less emphasis on dice rolling than KoT, which I think has been one of the big draws to my family enjoying KoT, since the people I know all know Yahtzee.
Dice mitigate the take that aspect.

Savage. Tom, Murder of cute things
Fun, easy, and cheap. Too luck based for me, but makes for a good family game night game
There are a lot of ways to minimize the luck. There are just two main luck factors, card draws and dice rolls, and there are bunches and bunches of cards that work those in your favor until it's pretty much guaranteed. I guess you also have the luck of your opponents (Especially the thief one) but that's where the power of bartering comes in
9:17 - You said your 3 player games took 20 minutes. You may have liked this one more because games like munchkin or flux tend to drag themselves out and take much longer. That may contribute to why you liked this one better. Small quick take that games don’t grind on your nerves as much as long drug out ones. Also, playing it with your family may have helped.
I played the game twice with a bunch of adult gamers and liked it, felt like it was a straight upgrade to Munchkin...but I did find the take that elements to be easily ignored...which kind of made half the deck feel useless. I agree that it is extremely appealing, and I would rather play it over a lot of similarly appealing games like, say, Exploding Kittens.
I think he likes slay because the artwork is similar to Pokemon, but funny, cheap and easy.
Tom, you should review the game Windward!
You might have better luck if you said "Tom, would you please consider reviewing Winward?" Just a thought.
Surprised. It was a take that chore. I had to specifically help someone else win just do it could end. (6 players). But it is quite adorable.
@@RichMulholland Not exactly, Here to Slay has the monsters that no one can take from you when you kill one, as well as guardians that protect your cards and heroes from getting destroyed. All in all you have a lot more defense in this game
And for other players, since you can play modifiers that can make others dice better or worse, and you can do other stuff, just try and barter with people to stop them from performing the "take that"
UGH WHY DO NONE OF THESE VIDEOS TELL YOU WHAT THE UNICORN HORN ON THE DIE MEANS
2player- strategic head to head match, 3p- ideal unless you want a deadset head to head, 4p and up gametime goes up and becomes purely a sabotage partygame of randomness. Great at 2-3 players though. (Some expansions make the game worse)
I only read the rules and saw a play through on this. Seemed like a shorter munchkin. Not alot of game just good art and a marketing campaign. Even promoted it as a roleplaying game. which is false advertising. Surprised Tom liked it. may give it a try but would probably rather play something else in 20 min regularly.
Absolutely love the art work, absolutely hate every game they made…..
I browsed the campaign site, and despite my initial interest, this company does stuff I do not care for. It's not just that they have kickstarter exclusives, they have kickstarter exclusives for returning customers. I don't mean, "you can buy this, or it's free for being loyal" I mean, "new customers need not apply". The completionist in me weeps, because, as far as I can tell, it's not cosmetic stuff. Sure, a couple unique cards isn't much in the grand scheme of things, but it's the principle.
Good to know, thanks. I dont care for that sort of customer discrimination either.
@@trevorsinnott123 Ok, that's good to know... I did NOT see that anywhere on the page when I browsed, but upon review I see it mentioned once. Like 75% of the way down that huge crawl. Maybe they mentioned it again in one of the updates, but it's a HUGE ask to expect people to slog through so much to get that information.
It REALLY should have been covered in that first chart that had basically everything else in it. That was literally my train of thought: "Oh, an exclusive, can we buy it?" * Scrolls down to first chart listing add-ons * "Huh, guess not. PASS".
I can see this working at a lower player count.
I played with 5 players and it's straight up a bad game. Took us 2 hours to play it, there is sooo much 'take that', with so many players there is a really high chance someone will play something bad on you whenever anyone does something, which drags the game on and on.
The only thing that saves this game is its artwork and cuteness.
Ive played four games at five player count and it was a blast. I think it works best at 4-5 player. Each game took about an hour to an hour and a half and it’s so light we had a lot of conversation in it.
@@nurseruben5431 I’ve played this and munchkin and there are similarities but it’s different enough that I like it better. I always laugh when people use the word period. In their critique. Like their opinion matters more than most.
@@theenthusiast4218 my apologies my friend. My opinion is no better than anyone else's. I have to admit that out of the two games, I would rather play here to slay.
This game or take that games in general have a BIG potential if you have the right crowd. We played with 6 people’s one time and it took us 1 and a half hour, but it was a blast!
I definitely don't like that idea of being randomly interrupted by other players during your turn. It's one thing for the active player to steal cards etc from other players during the active player's turn, but having the inactive players able to interrupt the active player gets annoying imo, and kills the game progression
I understand what you are saying here but IMO that is what makes it fun. Rather than waiting for people to do their turn so that you can have yours can get boring sometimes. So the fact that people can play on other people’s turns makes it so you are involved in every single turn, which makes it fun.
Gotta say this looks like a pass for me. It definitely seem to fit a Munchkin-esque realm and would be a lot more interesting than most take-thats.
Too random for me. If rate it a 5 out of 10.
This game looks great and it's 50% off on Amazon right now, but sadly, I know I won't be able to get my wife into it, and she's the person I play games with 90% of the time. 😄
Just got this as a Christmas gift from our lovely neighbors who have no idea that we are hobby board gamers. Super excited to check it out with the kids!
