The Holy Eucharist: Rite II on The Fourth Sunday of Easter, April 21, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Reverend Cameron J. Soulis was the preacher. Musical Notes: The organ voluntaries today are by the English organist and composer Alec Rowley (1892-1958). Rowley passed his career as a church-musician, educator, and broadcaster based in greater London, while building a considerable oeuvre of compositions for piano, organ, chorus, and orchestra. Many of his piano pieces were pedagogical, leading to his familiarity to a generation of students, but his wider fame was limited. Each of the three pieces carries an epigram, presumably an inspiration or point of departure for the compositional impulse: the Benedictus quotes from Christina Rossetti, “I bring refreshment…I bring ease and calm,” the Pastorale cites the opening verse of Psalm 23, and Gaudeamus recalls the opening of Psalm 46, “God is our refuge and strength…”
