In the Novel, "Itachi Shinden: Book of Dark Night", Itachi killed his lover, Izumi, first. He snuck into her house right before the clan slaughter and used Tsukuyomi on her to give her the life he thought she deserved. In the illusion she lived for 70 years, marrying Itachi, having his children, and eventually dying very happily of old age. As she died of old age in the illusion, it tricked her body in real-time to die as well. She used her final moment after the illusion ended to thank Itachi for the wonderful life.

It's exactly because this was "next-level messed up" that I was disappointed when they made Itachi a sort of good guy. He made for a wonderful villain. One with a masterplan to gain Eternal Mangekyou.

I still believe that at the beginning it was meant to be this way. When he shows up looking for Naruto, there was no way he was a good guy. He could have handled Sasuke differently, without using again Tsukuyomi. They had to go and find Tsunade to wake him up. There's no excuse for that. Since the beginning of Shippuden tough they started dropping hints. I like Itachi, but I look at the two parts separately: he was a wonderful villain in the first one and some sort of hero in the second that had amazing intentions and made some big mistakes
