These are some of the most tech packed basketball sneakers of 2021 with a full lenth zoom air unit plus forefoot zoom air unit and a aerodynamic mid and outsole design- but judge for yourself if they're worthy enough to be a game day sneaker. As a foot doctor I look at basketball shoes and basketball sneaker technology a bit differently as I focus more on what foot types benefit from these shoes as well as the tennis shoe's functional attributes on the tennis and basketball court
Some of the main areas we cover in this basketball shoe playtest, teardown and performance review are:
- The weight, durability, fit and playability
- What are the features of the insole, midsole, and outsole
- Nike basketball shoe technology explained

Excuse me, Doctor.. do your heels and toes really fit this shoe from end to end just like in the thumbnail or do you have a little allowance?
Coz I really and always have a problem knowing what is the right fit for me whenever I buy basketball shoes.
Thank you so much, doc! 🙂
No I leave a bit of room in the toebox - I have a video explaining my sizing reasoning here actually - czcams.com/video/sqn8k3tVl6c/video.html
@@FootDoctorZach WOAH! Just watched it and it's really informative and helpful! Thank you so much for your videos, Dr. Zach! :)
👍👍👍
Hey Doc-- do you think these would be good for someone with Plantar Fasciitis? And if not, do you have any suggestions for which shoes to look into? Thank you!
The most informative and practical review I’ve seen. Actually giving proper detail into why these would suite some and not others which is what I’ve been looking for, was close to buying these but actually as I have a wider foot and can’t sacrifice the comfort I’ll give them a miss (also had no idea about the protruding part on the bottom so really helpful!)
Glad it helped you 👍👍
Just saw your channel today. instantly subscribed the moment you cut the 36's in half :D looking forward to more of these in depth shoe teardown/ breakdown
Glad you got something out of it!
Excellent rev. Defenitly worth a sub. keep making this kind of vids. Looking forward for more vids
Thanks! Glad you liked it
For a heavy guy like me, that zoom unit that's sticking out from the bottom was not an issue. Works great for me
Found your channel and I'm loving it bro! Thanks!
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks for the video, now I'll know what to think about when I'm purchasing shoes.
Great vid and analysis as always! Thanks!
Thanks!
More of this please! Nice video btw! Keep it up!
Thanks! Glad you liked it
Keep this up, this is what I'm looking for
Awesome! Glad you liked it
Excellent analysis! Keep it up mate!
Thanks! Glad you liked it
Great review, thanks for putting it together.
Glad it was helpful!
MY G THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!
I Finally Know that these are right for me.
Glad it helped!
I’d love to see your thoughts on the Nike KD 14. Thanks for all the informative breakdowns of shoe technology
Yup for sure I’ll be getting into them - thanks!
Wow I'm new on your channel and impressed with this rewiew.
Thanks! Glad you liked it
First time to see your video. Best basketball shoes Performance Review I have seen in youtube !!
Great Video !!! Very details explain
It's great to see inside of the shoe after you cut off it
Thanks! Glad you liked it
The best foot doctor and shoe reviewer there is! Thank you for bringing really important facts that are supported with evidence. Really appriciate these kind of videos!
Thanks! Glad you liked it
Wow! What a great review! I am a fan now of yours! Subscribed!

Wow your videos are really informative
Glad you got something out of them 👍👍
I subscribe to doc. I found his content very entertaining and informative. Kudos to you doc.i also like the teardown review 😄
Just got my pair, saw some comments about the wear after 2 months. Is the change in fit of the shoe because of the loosening that severe?
also can you still use it efficiently after that slight change?
Thanks for the review and tear down!
I have put 6-7 hours of play in the AJ 36 and this is by far the bounciest feeling shoes I have ever experienced! And I have been using ZoomAir shoes since the late 1990-ies. The impact absorption is really good in the heel, while the forefoot Zoom bag springs back after loading, giving you the sensation of mini trampoline! As for the fit - shoe runs a bit long and narrow. They felt uncomfortably snug wide wise at the forefoot, while lengthwise I still had 5mm from big toe to shoe end. First putting them on foot I thought that I will have to return the pair and go 1/2 or 1 size up. Fortunately either the materials stretch or insole compactifies(or both), so now I even need a thicker sock. The only issue I have with AJ36 is with heel lockdown - I feel a slight heel movement up-down incidentally. I have no problems with Zoom protruding - shoe doesn't feel wobbly to me and it's like the bulge makes it easier to feel ZoomAir loading and rebounding.
That’s interesting you have some heel slippage- I was locked in there pretty good , but it’s all about foot type for sure
@@FootDoctorZach A short update from my side - found out that if I thread the laces over the covering piece of leather with the Jumpman logo the fit and lock improves noticeably! Not sure if real or mind trick ;) I also kinda like the look better.
Zero issues with forefoot either. Once worn it’s non-issue. Feel like this review isn’t aging so well @Foot Doctor Zach. Compared to the field, these are elite! Zero break in for me, hard to find anything close to this tech!
SUBBED!!!! Been lookin into a new hoop sneaker. Thanks for the in depth review. 🔥
Appreciate it!
Nice review
Hopefully you get a chance to do a review on the new jordan 12 retro playoffs. Great content once again
👍👍
Thanks for making video very good
Glad you liked it
Thank you a lot. I came across Air jordan 36 on discount and got them. played in them for about 2-3 days and really felt discomfort in some areas. I watched some of the reviews and like everybody was praising them and calling them one of the best BBall shoes out there. The thing is, my feet are wide and have high arc, so stiff materials on the upper really irritated my feet while playing for extended periods, plus that forefoot zoom unit caused huge discomfort over time as stiff upper pushed foot down into it and although traction was absolutely great and shoe felt bouncy af, because of this discomfort in the forefoot, I never felt good support on them and usually you sacrifice support for comfort and in this case this shoes are not comfortable at all. Everything this was explained perfectly in video, thanks a lot once again.
Love the basketball stuff
Awesome! Glad you liked it
Thanks great video
This is my 1st video watching.. Great job on breakdown of this sneaker..

Thank you for this REAL review. All info i needed. It was in my basket to get for like week, and now i see what i am getting and this is super helpful. Decides to skip them and search in something else more comfortable.
Pls do more reviews like this. Very very informative and ticks some questions that other reviews don't even mention.
Keep up, i hope you go big on this channel.
New sub here 💪
Thanks! Glad you got something out of it- I’ll have plenty more coming up for sure
Tried them on today and I was sold immediately. Having the sunset color ordered and will probably get the green color way next week as well
Hey Doc, what are your thoughts on using basketball shoes for hard court tennis? I have some really solid pairs of bball shoes that I didn’t play much with on the basketball court but I’m thinking of using for tennis. I feel like aside from durability, they have similar tech as well as the advantage of being lighter and more breathable. Thanks!!
They aren’t as stable laterally and aren’t as fast but plenty of people do it and have great luck with it
Nniiceee!! Can you do tear down of retro sneakers? Like Scotty Pippen kicks, Penny Foamposites, Shaqs, or Kenny Griff Jrs?
Yup- I’ve got the Jordan 2 coming up soon actually as well
Nice vid
Awesome review! I was actually planning on buying this today because it always comes up whenever I search 'top shoes for heavy players', 'top shoes for chronic ankle sprainers', and 'top shoes for wide feet' so I was shocked at your feedback--but also extremely grateful to see this before I got my hands on these shoes.
Do you have any recommended shoes for heavy players/chronic ankle sprainers?
I actually made a video on that - hope it helps!
czcams.com/video/wqJGIY1m9qc/video.html
This shoe is the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn. No pain at all when I play volleyball. I play middle blocker and setter, so I have to pivot, shuffle, jump and run a lot. I sprain my ankle often and have abit of a wide foot, but this shoe keeps me so stable and no chafing of my toes. The traction is pretty good, picks up dust but not too much. And it is so light, I don’t feel any negative weight working against me. As for the bulge of the zoom unit in the forefoot, don’t worry, i did not feel unstable at all.
All in all, most comfy shoe ever, light and supportive. Out of 10, I would give a 9/10. Missing 1 is that crazy curry traction:) I’m 1.84m and 70~kg. Just for reference
That’s an awesome perspective
@@FootDoctorZach thanks doc, btw ur reviews are truly the most informative because u have test and the numbers! I know u will grow to become one of the biggest
Thanks!
@@jrandomx8548 hello how is the shoe now? is it still good
I’m a middle and am considering this shoe. Since I’m going to be on the balls of my foot a lot loading for blocks (potentially an issue with the bulge of the zoom unit) and will likely be playing on dusty floors, would you still recommend this shoe?
Thanks for reviewing! However, these are the only pair of bball shoes that makes my arches ache and feel on fire after an hour of play. Why is that? Is it because of the dual stack zoom unit? I hate to give these up because they perform well, but my arches though 😔
It’s just hitting you in the wrong spot- same with my foot and the numbness I talk about in the video- it may break in after a week or so of use but for sure some people just aren’t going to be able to tolerate these
Great Review bro, watching your videos for years, could you do a Review of ANTA shoes for example KT 7 ????
Please....
Ty....
Yep they’re on the list
awesome video
Appreciate it👍👍
Have you experienced the issue where the forefoot zoom unit feels squeaky/or when the insole rubbing with the thin cloth layer on the zoom unit??
Would love to see you do your wear down test on a shoe with XDR rubber vs it’s regular counterpart
Good idea - XDR is usually worth a mm
You mentioned that these aren't good for chronic ankle sprainers. I'm definitely a chronic ankle sprainer especially the left one which is my dominant one. Can you recommend a brace that works well for basketball? I'm 5'8 185 lbs. I have a mcdavid 195 which does well stabilizing the ankle, but it feels like I'm playing in a cast. Also it is so thick that my instep becomes uncomfortable in my shoes and feels like I need a half size and even full size bigger shoe. Thanks in advance.
Great video! Thank you so much for the excellent review and teardown. Now I would love to hear your thoughts on the two previous Jordans, the 35 low and the 34 low. I feel like those two might give you similar performance to the 36s but with more comfortable uppers.
Glad you liked it- yeah the 35 to me is a better shoe - the 34 I honestly don’t think I ever wore for a long period but I did really like the 35
@@FootDoctorZach no issues with the fly wire cables or flight plate irritating your arches? I’ve seen a lot of reviews where the shoes were overall great but that arch irritation being a deal breaker for them. Also, I have slightly wide feet. Should I go true to size or go half a size up?
On the 36 I went up 1/2 for wide- it’s in the fit section of the video
@@FootDoctorZach sorry I should’ve specified. I meant to ask if you went a half size up with the 35s.
I did
omg, please do more basketball shoe breakdown and teardown - i wear bb shoes for tennis!!! :)))) thanks!
Awesome! Glad you liked it
Mine are on the way, found your video while waiting and I'm a 14 very flat narrower feet. Noticed you said go up . 5 size. They don't make 14.5 so I did buy the 15. I'm 45 and still play like a younger athletic guard and need support, ground feel, not a ton of cushion and typically feel shiftier in a low top. Today's Shoes are made so small it seems, I buy performance and style, and I struggle with finding a good fit. Over the last 3 years PG4 and Gianni's Freak2 have been ideal. KDs in a 14 we're so tight and I thought they would be great but nope. Do you think these will work?
Narrow and flat is a good match for these- just depends on foot shape and if you’ll like that zoom unit - not sure if a 15 will be too long though
@@FootDoctorZach unbelievably Dicks had these in 15. (I haven't been to a retail store to buy shoes and so long I couldn't believe it but they had many models in my size) Tried them on and def too long. I grabbed some Pumas, as I've been really interested in trying them and didn't realize they have a similar return policy as Nike. I can wear them and bring them back within 90 days. The Jordans are still on the way so maybe I can get lucky and return them for a 14 or sell privately for a profit.
How are the pumas for you ?
Also what would you recommend for flat footed guys with wide feet?
Hi Zach, can you do a video for Zion 1? Thank you!
👍👍
wow, i have to admit it's the best review of a basketball shoe I've seen so far on YT
Thanks! Glad you liked it
Great review! The magnification was dope. Any suggestions for recent basketball shoes that do offer comfort without sacrificing performance?
Thanks 👍 UA curry probably my go to in that category if using for indoor - outdoor probably GP turbo even though a tennis shoe works great on outdoor hoops
Great vid Zach, are these a magnet for a rolled ankle? I like the kobe protro not just as the court feel, but I feel the outrigger and shank plate lock my ankles in. Any advice?
These arent the greatest things in the world for an ankle sprainer but not terrible either
Love your videos can you do tray young basketball shoe please 💯💯💯
In the mail 👍
Had blister on these on my tts. Should i go half size up?
Are they any good for just walking outside with them?
Question, How much input does Michael have on these shoes now that he is no longer an active NBA Player ? Just curious as to if he uses them on court to get an idea & then say yay/nay on things.
Great question - I would assume he has some input or he wouldn’t let his name be on them but if anyone has more info I’d love to get more insight too
After I broke mine in I bought another pair to wear while I'm at work. By far one of the best shoes I've been able to wear both for work and play.
Does this shoe make it so that when you jump you would jump higher in the Jordan 36 thank you would in the KD 15 for example?
I was thinking there was air that popped in the forefoot area due to this feeling of pressure the front of my foot. After watching this.. and knowing that I have unbelievably high arches.. think I found my problem. Any suggestions to accommodate for this? I’d hate to buy new shoes.
Not particularly - maybe a stiffer insert but it’s just the shape of the shoe unfortunately
Got the Taco Jays and have been loving the breathability for outdoor.
The best CZcamsr for sneaker performance analysis!
Thanks!
Thanks
Does anyone know if you can cut off that little piece of fabric with the Jordan logo (on the laces)? I have a hard time tying the shoe properly.
These feel like they were made for me. They are so light weight, breathable and the cushion is the best. Medium wide foot. Casual wear. No hot spots and they feel like they are going to last a long time.
Are they still going good
@@kingclassified8503 for sure. I use these shoes a lot and they are still holding shape well. I like them so much I ordered the sunset color way as well. Great feeling shoe, durable and lots of unsolicited complements.
@@gateofdivine582 bought them a few weeks ago. They are too tight for my feet 🙁
@@kingclassified8503 man. I’m sorry. Mine did loosen up after a few days. Hope yours do. They look great with shorts and shorty black socks.
@@gateofdivine582 yeah it’s a shame. I really liked the look of them and how they played but the feel was unbearable. Played in them for about a week
Nike intentionally use such thin tread pattern which wear out super fast. The outsole is done when the upper is almost brand new. What a way to contribute more to landfills.
Yeah I never understood the super shallow treads..
Just got a pair of these and absolutely love them. But for some reason I can feel the forefoot Zoom Air Unit when I'm walking, but only in the right shoe. Alongside this, it's also squeaking. Any idea why? I had the same squeaking problem with the zoom freak 3.
It’s the interface between the air and the foam- most times it doesn’t go away but you can try powder under the insole that sometimes helps
Sounds like your a shoe mechanic or a shoe surgeon. You dissect and explain the whole anatomy with complete diagnosis. 11/10
Haha thanks!
Like a running shoe, a basketball shoe is similar. comfort depends on the type of foot that you have. The only Jordans that I experienced playing on was the AJ12s and they're uncomfortable as fck, but I still loved them because Jordan wasn't retired yet during those years.
i just picked up a pair and im a size 12 with a somewhat wide foot and they were pretty snug. snug to the point of uncomfortable. the zoom in the front is a little weird. I would advise to 1/2 or full size up. i have to return mine. great video i wish i would have watched this before i purchased.
Hope the size up helps - yeah they fit weird for sure
Doctor Zach. I would be glad if you help me. My son is a 15 year old licensed basketball player. He has been playing basketball since he was 8 years old. We live in Turkey. My son has elastic flat sole problem in his foot. The doctors said it was okay for him to play basketball. When the foot is on the ground, it becomes a flat sole, when it is lifted, it becomes a normal sole. I may not be able to write correctly in English. Until last year, he always wore Jordan. (Jordan 4, jordan 11, jordan sapce jam 8 etc.) His feet and knees were sore after training. I researched last year. Kevin Durent also has flat feet. I bought Kd 14, my son's foot and knee pains are gone. But when viewed from behind, it looks like his foot is a little crooked. I bought it at Kd 15. My son didn't like it very much. My son jordan wants 36 or 37. What would you recommend? Should you buy insoles for flat soles and put them in shoes? His doctor said there is no need for such a thing. Should I get Jordan 36 or 37? What would you recommend? Or should we choose other than these models? Could it be pg or curry ? Since there are no Turkish subtitles in your videos, I have a hard time translating and understanding what you are saying. I would be very happy if you write a detailed answer. Thanks.
Man I have to say a lot of these shoe reviews are copy and paste but you truly have an in-depth breakdown that is highly interesting. 💯🔥🔥
Glad you got something out of it!
Hey Doc-- do you think these would be good for someone with Plantar Fasciitis? And if not, do you have any suggestions for which shoes to look into? Thank you!!
I actually made a video on that - hope it helps!
czcams.com/video/wqJGIY1m9qc/video.html
Thank you! I was so looking forward to these but I hate them! Rigid, thin upper and that forefoot Zoom felt like the 33s, only less stable and a little harder. Super narrow too! Easy pass, the AJ34 low was way better for someone looking for the characteristics these have IMHO
What’s the best shoe you’d recommend for arch and ankle support?
Probably hardens in the basketball lineup - the next levels are good but just so so heavy - lebrons have a nice tie down around the ankle too
Is it good for outdoor use please answer because im not sure to buy it or not
I talk about this in the video- check out the durability test - among hoop specific shoes they’re more durable but the depth is low - too much to type but it’s in the video
Yeah that zoom air really pushes into the ball of my foot. Do you think you can eventually smush it down to where the forefoot becomes relatively flat?
I didn’t for me but if it does then the zoom is going flat so that’s not a great outcome either
Hey! Wondering if you think this is good shoe for somebody with a flat foot? I often get plantar fascia pain while playing basketball, but not running or anything less dynamic.
Also have you heard of MOVE Insoles? Would love a breakdown of them as they are co-founded and invested in by Cp3 and Dame
Ill be reviewing them soon
Great review Zach. I just picked a pair of these up and like them although the toe box is a bit snug causing my pinky toe to rub some. What do u suggest for that? Different socks or tape my toe?
You could try to stretch them but that’s just how they’re built and the uppers don’t give much so it may be unavoidable to a certain extent
@@FootDoctorZach thanks for your reply. I may add/try Zoom Freak 3’s since they are reasonably priced. I’m hoping they will be friendly to my old knees. My KD13’s were not and the Nike ES was out of the 14’s so I bought the J 36’s.
Great review! I’ve been looking at these for a while but I have been scared of the mid foot shank and plastic overlays on the lateral side of the shoe. Did you experience any discomfort in that area?
For me, no problems there but I did feel a slight imbalance in the pressure of the zoom forefoot unit from right to left shoe. Right shoe was a little more raised and less comfortable.
@@Kalbo.. that’s great to know, thanks!
The width and those protrusions broke in better than I thought but it’s still a pretty stiff shoe
I picked up the Jordan 34 low and high and two colorways of the 35 but I'm skipping this year's shoe because of the instability. All were for my eldest hooper who loves the 34 the best. Great review!!
Thanks! Yeah I’m more a fan of the 35 TBH
Thumbs up and subscribed!! Your explanation of the leno wave was the best amongst other channels that I'd seen.
Thanks! It’s fun to see it up close
Hey Zach, I just bought this shoe for basketball indoors. After trying on the size 10.5, they were too tight, so I decided going with an 11. After playing in the shoe, I got blisters on both of my heels. Do you think this is because I need to break them in? Thanks in advance
Did going up a size be best for people with wide feet or does it just get longer. Also did they break in
Do a versus video!
These vs the zoom gt runs 😈
👍👍
I love this shoe in the gym I wear sz15 and I love how this shoe returns energy plyometrics basketball running and free weight movements are definitely improved by the zoom unit
Awesome !

@@Forsmiless 6,1

@@Forsmiless I used to be a size 13 when I was 18 now that I'm 40 I grown a couple sizes I recently lost some weight put on some muscle and I think that's what did it now I feel a little bit better in my arches I use a tennis ball every night to break up the muscle around my Arch and I wear those shoes in the summer but they perfect for the gym now and both weight training and cardio I can vote for that Griffey release too don't cross trainers ain't no joke and really be coming in handy for any man 6 foot and 200 lb+
I have a question. How does this model fit for a person with a wide foot? Thank you
I discuss this in detail in the fit section- they’re long and medium so not the best if a short wide foot
Almost bought on line. But I have wide feet. What shoe do you think is the most comfortable for outdoor basketball for people with wide feet. I like a big bounce effect. Wearing 2021 Lebrons. But fit a bit tight. Thank You for true video info!!
I actually made a video on that - hope it helps!
czcams.com/video/wqJGIY1m9qc/video.html
The 36 is the goat, looks, performance, these things and the low are a beast, light, bouncy, tons of breathing. For my foot shape this is by far the best shoe I’ve hooped in over my 32 years of playing.
hold your follow through and make the shot with more ease, let the ball leave your front part grip of your palm while flipping it, just like you're nuturing your shot,
DR you got great jumper just missing out the good top release
Thanks for the advice- I’ve always been inconsistent but that’s because I never really drill it- but I should start , hopefully you’ll see some improvement with future videos 👍👍
Hey doc I got a question about the AJ 36. If you cut the tread bridge out and made the sole two independent units similar to the AJ 28, would the shoe preform differently and would the overall shoe still be usable?
Yeah it would prob be more flexible
What about the impact protection?
Mine are on the way, found your video while waiting and I'm a 14 very flat narrower feet. Noticed you said go up . 5 size. They don't make 14.5 so I did buy the 15. KDs in a 14 we're so tight and I thought they would be great but nope. Do you think these will work?
From my experience AJ36 runs long, so going size up will only exacerbate this fact. I went TTS and I have more space(~5mm) between big toe and shoe that I like, adding a full size up seems not a good idea, especially when you say you have narrow foot. I have found AJ36 do breaks in, making some room at the forefoot after few hours of play.
@@zlatko. thank you. It's nearly impossible to find a 14 in any color. If so I'll cancel the 15
Doe sit fit good
New subscriber here. While I like the basketball reviews. Let's see some hiking shoes, running shoes. I am in my 40s and don't play much ball anymore but definitely have a shoes addiction. With that said I want shoes that are comfortable. I still buy basketball shoes but mainly running and hiking. Like the New UA Hovr Phantom 2. I would like to hear your feedback on those. Since I have them I will be able to hear your thoughts on them. It will help me with other reviews you have done. Hope you understand all that jumbo.
Is the shoe good or bad for hoopers with bad history of rolled ankles. The jordan 35 was a great shoe for ankle support. The 35 low was even better for ankle support. Im looking to upgrade and would love to stay with the jordan brand
Played in these. And as for me, they play just fine. Quick, responsive. Secured and comfortable. I think the G.T Jumps are the only ones better tp Play in.
Good explanation than others
Glad you got something out of it 👍
You should try the Brandblack Rare Metal 2! I've heard great things about it from hoopers and it's a somewhat unconventional design/build. It's a bit pricey but it's likely it'll go on sale for Black Friday
I’ll check it out
can you compare them to a kyrie 7.
is this a good shoe for a guard/ wing ?
7’s are a pretty different feeling shoe- more wide based , low to the ground- I’d personally rather have the 7’s in that position but that’s just me
Just worn them yesterday for practice, traction was consistent, cushion was great and my knees were feeling fresh after the end of the practice. Heel lockdown though was bad. My heels were moving up n down a bit and caused friction and blisters. I tight them harder and nothing changed. I was dissapointed as heel slippage will not improve with time. Thinking of returning them. Did you have similar experience?
Weird cause I had the opposite experience- the lockdown for me was good and the comfort under bad- it’s probably a mismatch with the shape of your foot vs shoe
@@FootDoctorZach Thank you for your response Zach. Most probbaly the fit of the shoe is not for me. I am 35yo and play competitive bball i usually change 3-5 pairs a year i never had slippage issues with any other shoe, especially mids and highs. Now i got the GT Jumps and they feel nice tts, a little bit snug though.
Something else i was surprised with was that i had ordered the 36s earlier in September in the Doncic colorway and the 12 was too tight and the 12.5 was too long. I returned both back to nike webshop. Last week i was at House of Hoops in Rotterdam The Netherlands and i tried the infrared and the 12 was perfect fit, even roomy. I had similar experience with the Why.Not 1s in the past. Webshop too tight and small, off line store perfecr fit. Either sizes are too inconsistent or specific stores het supplied by different factories which still makes Nike and Jordan brand incosistent 😂😂😂
