    This reminded me of my first drive in a B20. After years behind B18 engines in 100K mile Amazons, I bought a '71 144 with that odd tuned-intake B20. My first move was to pull the extra throttles and install my good HS6s.
    Even in the stock, heavier 140, what a revelation! Just that tiny bit of displacement made such an improvement in driveability. In a 544 it would be a loads of fun.

    Hey David, that "let off throttle, wants to go more" thing is standard on mechanical ignition cars, what's happening is that there's still a good amount of mixture in the manifold when you lift and lifting increases the timing significantly. Modern vehicles don't do that at all. Though with a standalone you CAN set them up to do just that, however it's super annoying. You can also put so much timing into low load areas that it'll surge under engine braking and down hill etc. There are practical drive-ability reasons for not tuning in certain ways, not just economy or power or reliability reasons.

  • @ezeflierid
    @ezeflierid Před 3 lety +1

    Does that engine have metal cam gear? Or the original fiber cam gear? The former can be noisy, the latter is typically quiet. Also, is there any chance the spacer on the end of the cam behind the retaining nut wasn’t installed? If it’s not on there it will cause the retaining plate to get damaged and the nut to come off. And that will definitely make some weird noises. Don’t ask me how I know..

  • @ace-ub2ek

    I noticed when I replaced my side drafts with a weber that my 2nd cylinder had a drip of antifreeze coming from behind the valve seat. I had a knock when cold that would mostly go away when warm. I eventually bought another amazon with a rebuilt b20b. When I disassembled my motor which was a b20 block with a e head that leaked behind valve i found that the coolant leak had been washing my cylinder, i had almost 1/4th slop side to side. Can't beleive it even ran.

    • @mayflowerlash11
      @mayflowerlash11 Před 3 lety +1

      There is a video on CZcams of a 164 with triple webers. It sounds awesome.
      It's title is "Volvo 164 Burning Rubber Part 2". With the engine under load at slow speed (going through a tight corner) The webers are particularly growly. The webers have simple foam for air cleaners so they might as well be straight through.
      If I could get my hands on a 164 I would set it up with triple webers just to listen to the engine song

    First comment; should I buy an s60r with a 6 speed for under 3k? It's got a new engine and turbo, everything else has 105k miles. It's not leaking oil or trans fluid, It does need rear struts tho which are pricey, paint has clear coat failure, and it needs new tires. It also has an IPD tune on it

      Yes go for it !

    • @DavidBello
      @DavidBello  Před 3 lety +2

      That's a good price but why on earth would it need a new engine at such low mileage? Those blocks are the weak spot in terms of reliability lottery. Some have zero issues and others Crack at the cylinder walls or are neutered for a failed radiator or expansion bottle overheating them. I miss mine but recommend an emergency fund for any major (inevitable) repairs. But when you buy it cheap you can enjoy it that much more under budget 👍

    • @jonathantrevino2899
      @jonathantrevino2899 Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for replying David, I don't know why it needed a new engine. I do know it now has a lightened fly wheel and a tune; so perhaps the previous owner went too hard on the stock block.

      VP Autoparts for the parts, Master’s Touch for the service. If it’s fuel injected you may have some issues with the electrics but be patient with diagnostics and it will be simple enough to sort out. That’s about it in the general sense.

    @mayflowerlash11 Před 3 lety +1

    I doubt it is piston slap, no smoke and it was irregular. But something is loose. It could be anything that vibrates. I know, as a suggestion that is a big help. At least if it breaks it wont be anything major. Good luck tracking it down.

      I had the unfortunate experience decades ago of rebuilding completely a tired b18 only to hear that scary clackety-clack after less than 100 miles or so from the engine’s innards. After consulting with the unapologetic parts vendor was advised “oh gee. Soft, bad batch of wrist pins” they supplied me. More expense, wasted time and a complete tear down to install an improved batch of pins. Wish to this day I had never taken on that job I did for free for a friend, who never expressed any appreciation for that hard work. What utter crud.
